More Cap Room...Portis & Moss Restructure

Post by spudstr04 »

Clinton Portis and Santana Moss restructured their contracts, saving the team a combined $4.9 million in cap room.

Both players converted large portions of their salaries into roster bonuses - they didn't take any less money. This puts any possibility of a Portis trade to rest.

Yes, I was sick to death of those Portis trade discussions that were already pretty baseless, way to go putting that to rest!

With the heart this team is showing our management/F/O needs to get this ship righted quicker than ever. These guys deserved to be rewarded. They really must buy into Gibbs.

How hard is it to buy into Gibbs when he is so comitted to the players. Cp and Moss want to win and know Gibbs has the ability to do it. Not to mention its so easy to love Gibbs style of smack mouth football and the hunger to put us back on track.

with the change in OTA & mini-camp schedules, Gibbs is listening to his players and their concerns... which again shows Gibbs' ability to deal with present day player damands.

Hard to believe this would have happend in the 80's.

Sounds like the Skins are clearing space for Dre Bly.

Certainly makes sense. It seem odd they are clearing this much space though unless they really believe the deal is imminent and they are going to include Shawn Springs and need the cap space to eat his 7.5 mil.

Hopefully you're wrong and we're clearing space to resign Cooley and Taylor. :D

You didn't say otherwise, but just to be clear I'm not arguing for Bly. I think he's better then some have said, but I'm not drooling either.

It doesn't seem like they'd need that much of this year's cap to sign Cooley and Taylor. We usually give big bonuses & minimum salary to limit the cap hit. They are not free agents until next year anyway and it seems like these things are not done this early.

It just seems like with Bly's statements in the press, the Springs situation and the sudden big cap clearing the most likely explanation.

I would say now is the perfect time to extend Cooley & Taylor. Look what happend to Dock because a deal was not struck early.

I think these restructures are usually just as good financially for the players as they are the team aren't they? Player gets some up front cash vs. contract money that they would probably never realize. Team gets to lower the cap number. Dan Snyder has been the wiz at doing this because he has the cash to pay these up front bonuses.

Point being, not sure these guys are really taking one for the team or anything.

Glad they're up for it either way!

They tried to do something with Dock earlier, but Dock refused so he could play the market.

Thomas was scheduled to become a free agent next year  Was it smart to re-sign him and Mike Sellers :?:

Springs cap number is already included in the cap. If he is cut or released before June 1st his cap number will go up almost $100,000.00  , the team is currently about $9M under the cap :o If you woke up in the morning and Springs had been cut, the Skins would be $8.9M under.

Dre Bly has 1 year left on his deal and has a base salary of $4.2M so as it stands we have the room to bring him in too :D Now :!: with Springs still on the team . If signed to a long term deal his 2007 cap number could be about half what it would be if the trade took place now.

Rumor has it Dre doesnt want to come to Washington JUST for a sweet deal (that's probably already been discussed  ...remember the agent makes no money if there is no NEW deal). He wants to be back in the area.

Rich Tandler wrote:A trade was being discussed even before Dre Bly was traded to the Broncos and promptly announced that he’d rather be a Redskin. Apparently he wants play in Washington because he has a home near there (he’s from Chesapeake, Virginia) and he has good reason to believe that the Redskins will offer him a lucrative contract extension, something that the Broncos aren’t willing to do.

I still think Springs will be shipped to Detroit if Bly is brought in

This is what gets under my skin. Alot of Redskins have already re-done their contracts to help the team but Springs won't.
One would think that if he truely wants to get out of town and be with Shanahan then he would re-due his contract to a cap friendly contract to be traded. Apparently he does not want to be traded, but he also does not want to be a team player like the rest in order to help the team and possibly get to the SB.

Dude, sure CP and Moss and Samules are team players, but damn Dan Snyder just flat out owns this system!

Sure The Danny overspends for everyone, but he and his staff deserve mass DAP for the cap clearing moves they pull off.

Like the article said, the players will loose no money, however the Skins gain almost 5 Million in cap space.

You may hate Snyder, but you have to respect him.
