T.V. commercials having live feed to the game

Post by Cappster »

I love football but the commercials can get really irritating. Especially in prime time because there seems to be even more of them. I think a good solution/compromise would be like what the IRL does when they are showing a race. Have the commercial on the one side of the screen and have just a live feed to the field on the other. I would rather just watch whatever the refs do on the field rather than watch so many commercials.

I don't know about anyone else but I for one, like to stay in full force game mode. Commercials take a little part of that away. I can't afford to go to that many games so it would be nice if they had a split screen to keep you in "game mode" without irritating the sponsors too much.

If I have to see that Peyton Manning Sprint commercial again......."maybe like peyton manning's team maybe"....then I am going to $#^&@*&*(@&@^&* my ^@^@&*#& television set out the ^%%#^ window and .........ok sorry about that, but I have reached a new level of disdain for the ENTIRE Manning family and their "Aw Shucks" arrogant attitude. I apologize, I lost it a little bit there, but you hit nerve asking about football and commercials.

Quickly...one commercial that never gets old is the "It must be football season" one where the guy takes the frozen food and blasts the check out clerk upside the dome with it. That will always be funny to me.

Dangerfield, profanity (which includes any word with symbols in place of letters) is not allowed in our PG forums. Please check the rules again, and if you have any questions PM a mod.

Since half the post was symbols  I edited it a bit, but please keep it clean in the PG forums or take it to Smack so that you can let the world know how you feel about Peyton ;)

Holy cats.....

I just typed symbols randomly (How anyone would have imagined bad words is your idea)

Further, I NEVER typed anything even remotely resembling a profanity.

In fact, the post was based on symbols, much like when you watch network TV or the cartoon 'Charlie Brown'....you know, how 'nonsense' is portrayed by characters.........This is a new low for you overly ambitious moderators.

Tell Me Irn, how exacly did you edit my post?

It's too bad this is in the 'Lounge' section, I wish everyone could see this train wreck.

I am flabergasted that you think I somehow broke the PG barrier with my original post.

That's my point, I did not break any rules. I have never even done the type half a profanity thing and replace i's with !, u's with v's etc. in any post I've ever made on this board...even smack.

As for going somewhere else, I working on it, don't worry.

Wow that wasn't the feedback I was looking for. I was hoping that someone could chime in on the topic but I guess that got messed up.

Dangerfield, from the rules:

Profanity with 'characters' in place of letters still qualifies as profanity.

Most of your post seemed like random letters but when we come across "%$^&ing" as an adjective it's pretty clear what the symbols are taking the place of. This is what was edited.

Let me point you again to our rules:

7. The moderator(s) of TheHogs.net has the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for ANY reason.

Posts that violate the above terms will be edited or deleted upon discovery and a private message or e-mail sent to the offender. Depending on the nature of the violation or number of past offenses, the moderator(s) may terminate a user's account for a period of time or forever as a last resort. If a poster has any questions or concerns about the rules or a moderator(s) decision, it is to be done in e-mail or as a private message.

This could all have been settle quite easily via PM rather than 3 consecutive posts at 2 in the morning (as if we're a 24/7 answering service :))

So now that these things are (or should be) straight, let's get back to the topic:

I would love the kind of live feed that you describe, Cappster. . .anything that let me focus on something besides the advertising that FOX usually runs. (Ever notice how you get to see the same commercial at least 7 times per game?). I doubt that they'll do it, however, as commercials are also a time for the announcers / camera men to discuss things, and because they are likely not to get anything out of it.

Well, this goes both ways. No doubt, the advertisers would love to see a split screen set up, with adverts rolling all the way through the game, rather than a split screen just during the breaks allowing you to keep watching the game.

And I'd be willing to bet that 15 years later, we'd get the split-screen setup for the game itself, and commercial breaks added for the heck of it. . .

One of the things that I appreciate about the other kind of football is that, since the play is continuous, advertisers can try their best to get 2 cents in but it's usually only on uniforms or a tiny logo on the top right of the screen. Sports like (American) football, baseball, and basketball are just asking to be pumped full of garbage when there isn't action happening that very second.

Sad thing is, if "the other kind of football" ever took off here, I could see adverstisers and TV networks doing this durring the match.

American sports do lend themselves more to advertising than "old world sports", if I can call them that. They all seem to feature a multitude of breaks in play, just begging for adverts to be inserted. Personally, I think the balance has gone way too far towards advertising but that's what makes the leagues successful in the first place. Forget about the leagues being indebted to the fans - it's the advertisers that they need to keep courting, and if they have to dump all over the fan experience in order to do that, then they will.

I don't mind commercials after long drives and actual action in the game. This is what I hate:

Team scores... commercial... kickoff... commercial...3 and out... commercial...

We can do it more like college basketball does where they set certain times during the game to go to commercial (with the exception of the 18,000 timeouts at the end of each game, where we see more commercials than actual basketball, because they know people are watching).

Did anybody else notice that NBC sold the 1st down yellow line to advertisers? I noticed it was Ruby Tuesday a couple of weeks ago (it may have been ESPN).

Also, I think maybe the NFL should make sure that the same commercial cannot play in: 1) the same commercial break, 2) the same hour, and even possibly, 3) the same game.

I don't want to see Peyton Manning or that ridiculous McDonalds commercial ever again. (And I even liked the Peyton commercial originally)
Every Sunday, I root for two teams: The Redskins, and anyone playing the Cowboys

Was it "Ever-Loving" or "Freaking" ?

Although posting this response is probably undermining my credibility, I seek not to inflame nor circumvent any rules on this board. I just find that the moderators and staff are unable to have any type of continuity in what gets called out here. How is it possible that a thread talking about a sperm bank and having sticky feet whilst visiting one is up all day today in an 'open forum' of this board, and this is an available emoticon: ;furious; , yet you 'edit' my post?

Honestly, I don't need a response, this is a rhetorical question. I understand how many 'trolls' are out ther looking to make trouble. I just don't like getting called out for using profanity when I had no intention to do so. As for the 3 consecutive posts at midnight MST, well I guess I was having a little too much fun that night. Dangerfield, please don't take the correction personally.

Maybe your original word was supposed to stand for "freaking," but it's pretty clear that it violated of the rules.

Notice how the rest of your post wasn't edited. . .if you want to string along a bunch of "%^^$^#%@^@^$#" all day in hyperbole, feel free to do so. But we have to draw a line at some point, and we feel that the line is clear: don't use a word that is clearly profanity EXCEPT that it has symbols replacing letters. That's the difference between "$@^$#@%$^@#%#" and saying "that #^@%ing commercial one more time!. . ."

I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy being called out, I'm sorry that you never intended to break any rules, and I'm sorry that you feel like a moderator may have been picking on you. . .but trust me. . .it's nothing that you should take personally.

You seek not to flame the rules of the board? Really? You mean while you're questioning the rules of the board and the enforcement of them?

What were you seeking then?

I suppose you weren't trying to be flammatory when you said, "This is a new low for you overly ambitious moderators" either right?

How do you know what 'continuity' is? You've been a member since the last day of July... continuous with what? The last 60 days? It's irrelevant. The rules have always been the same and enforced in the exact same manner. Do certain things squeak through? sure. But for the most part... 99.9% of the time... if you post profanity whether it has characters or blanks or not... it's going to get moderated or you are going to be asked to edit your own post. There's no lack of continuity at all... if someone posts profanity or some semblance of it... they're going to hear about it. How do you know what PMs go back and forth between mods and members anyway? How do you know what profanity has or hasn't been addressed?

Please check out this new post. You're going to want to read it before you continue your membership here:

http://www.the-hogs.net/forum/viewtopic. ... 984#275984

It's not directed at you, but it does apply.

For the record... from the admin's stand-point... Irn-Bru had every right to moderate the post. He certainly did nothing to the post that hijacked the thread like your subsequent posts did. We do everything we can to maintain the PG environment. It's very hard for us to curb topic discussions as far as content goes... we're not here to censor people... only to make them post in the appropriate forum within the guidelines provided. So I'm not about to start moving topics to Smack because the topic was 'controversial' or immoral. Nor do we have a rule against such things. And for the most part... people are smart enough to post threads that might get heated, or that are inappropriate, in the smack forum... not in a public forum.

But we can enforce profanity, and we do have a rule about that... and so the moderator is strictly working within the guidelines provided for him/them.

The smiley thing is ridiculous. We have a smack forum too. Just because the board 'has something' doesn't make it okay to do something without prejudice. We HOPE that people will use some discretion with the few smieys available that might be less than PG... they're great fun to use in the smack forum. But I can take them away if they're making it hard for you to discern the rules. I have no way of making certain smileys work only in certain forums or I would.

I stand by my position, which was I never used profanity or any form of it.

Irn and I had a discussion, and I am fine with it...you have the ultimate power as staff to do what you want. I just wish you were not so sensitive when people ask questions, or ask for clarifications. You know, your site will be better with more good members, and sometimes you need to provide a level of customer service to those members. How many t-shirts will someone buy if they feel like they can't even ask a question about your policies?

This is a 2 way street. It's not just the members that should be grateful IMO.

As for commercials. I think we should follow the soccer tradition and have commercial free feeds provided by corporate sponsors, and have the barriers with ads all over the place.

I mean.... at LEAST we won't have to cut the screen in half for periods at a time, and we'd have some great sports follies footage to sell later.

You think I'll get in trouble for that? Oh well...as for the original topic, I do remember back in the 80's, my Uncle had one of the early gen. sat dishes, and he could get the Mon. night feed w/out commercials. It was hilarious...during the breaks you could hear them talking about women in the stands or what they were going to do after the game...good stuff.

Exactly what should I be grateful for? please tell me... I'm dying to know. Is it the 50 or 60 hours a week I put in in my 'spare time'? Don't act like you've walked a mile in my shoes just because you have some pre-conceived idea of the way things are. What is there to be grateful about as far as the community is concerned other than the staff who make it happen by volunteering their time and effort?

Thanks for telling me how to run the site better. I'm glad you know what it takes. So why aren't you starting your own?

How many t-shirts have you bought?

I don't NEED to do anything, why do I NEED to provide any type of customer service to anybody? See now you're just kicking sand in the face of everybody that makes this site happen, because there's NOBODY on the staff that need to apologize for anything. Are you under the impression that someone gets paid for this? Do you pay to be here? What gives anyone the right to EXPECT anything?

Why don't you just tell me the amount of money that you have put into the site, we'll pro-rate that out into the hours that JF and I alone put in, let alone the entire staff combined. Then you can tell me how you're not getting full bang for your buck.

You think goading me is your answer here?
