Redskins Team Needs

Post by Skinsfan55 »

Okay, a lot of people say we "need" a new TE, or we "need" a pass rushing DE...

IMO our team needs are as follows:

1.)
WR- The defense this year was what? 7th in the league? They are fine. It would be great to add a pass rusher, but as far as true need goes, it's WR.

In theory we could win a title with a better offense and the same defense we have now (with an extra year of experience for Rogers, Marshall, and Clark.)

Offense is what truly needs improvement, and with a bigger possession reciever to take pressure off Moss we could really improve the offense.

2.)
DE- Not as important as WR mind you, but important. A stronger pass rush would make our defense even better. We could be a top 3 defense again, and really make a strong run at a championship.

3.)
TE- This could either be a blocker (to improve the run) or a pass catcher to stretch defenses along with Cooley. It all depends on what Gibbs and Saunders want to do. Either one, or both might be nice.

I am excited about this offseason, because we don't need a whole lot in order to make us into a champion... :D

I would agree with WR but the areas that kept causing promblem because of lack of dept were CB and OG...Daniels and Evans really came on this year when Corny was healthy...I don't think DE really a problem??

a good de would transform our defense but im not sure if it is a priority.

I can see us signing a great number 2 with number 1 capabilities. That would raise our offensive output significantly. One player on each side of the ball can make us an automatic superbowl contender!!

Miami is nice in February right???

Yes, we have discussed this topic 101 times. I think they will address the WR in free agency and the draft will cover our Defensive needs.

i agree with the WR, but other than that we just need solid depth at Oline and CB.

I would love to get tim carter from the giants and draft the guard out of OU. I like Dock but we need depth on the oline. As far as TE goes, I am a big fan of Robert Johnson.

We dont need a de...Chris Clemons excels rushing the passer off the edge on third down. Plus, by the time we pick all the good de will be gone.

If we cant get Carter there are plenty of good wr we should be able to sign to complement Moss and Patten.

I think SF55 is exactly right, a WR and a DE upgrade wouldtake us to the next level. Even for those of you who like the DEs we currently have, both Wynn and Daniels are getting pretty old and Evans isn't an every down player. I also think we need someone who can excell if Griffin gets hurt. None of our ends now can beat a double team, so we have to have Griffin to take the double team and allow them to get a pass rush. I also agree with your assessment of TE. Royal is servicable, but little more than that. We also need a 4th coner and O-lineman for depth, but those should be priorities. (lets kick Jimoh out of town)

I had no problem with anything Ade Jimoh did this year. He was a beast on Special Teams and filled in adequately as defensive back.

The guys had some rough times under Spurrier, but give the guy a break, he's worked through his problems.

I was a big time Ade "Oh, no!" Jimoh hater at the start of the season, but he is a good special teamer and was playing better at nickel back at the end of the season than W. Harris. (not saying much, I know!)

WE DON'T NEED A TE!!!!!!!!

I don't know where everyone is getting this from! Saunders doesn't use the H-Back so much so Cooley will become primarily a TE and Sellers a FB! The argument that Cooley is an H-Back holds no water because he played TE his entire college career and it was Gibbs who converted him to his current position.

What's more, he rarely lines up in the backfield and primarily is used as a TE, Sellers plays more of the pure H-Back role! This is because Cooley isn't as good a blocker in open space and is more of a pure pass catcher. He can move to TE easily because that is really the position that he plays right now! - as the season went on he was used in more of a pure TE position more and more. We don't need two pass catching TEs! Nobody does! Please, somebody explain this because it makes no sense!

Here's what we need:

1. WR

2. WR

3. WR - I'm not saying we need three WRs, only one, I am just trying to show how pressing a need we have at this position. It is far more important than anything else!!!

T4. DE

T4. OG

T4. CB

5. PR/KR/ST player

6. PK

That's all we NEED. Obviously depth at other positions such as DT, C, and OT are important as well. TE is probably the least of our worries! Unless somehow that kid from Maryland falls to us (which won't happen because he'll be a top 10 pick) we don't need one except for depth purposes. We don't need a pass-catching TE! I would be all for a blocking TE though but no way a pass catching one unless he is going to be a backup!

You mean all the defensive ends you've heard of will be gone? Otherwise, the Redskins would never have picked Charles Mann or Dexter Manley.

Yeah there are a few good d-ends available in the 2nd round or later.

Hell Strahan was a 2nd round pick, as was Umenyiora, etc. Lots of 1st round defensive ends never work out. It's more of a crapshoot than any other position, imho.

Top 5 Sacks in the NFL & Their draft position:

Derrick Burgess (undrafted)
Umenyiora (2nd)
Rice (1st)
VandenBosch (2nd)
Schobel (2nd)

Being a 1st round isn't a predictor of success.

Our biggest need to start off at is 1)WR someone who has size hands and able too create and get seperation off the line. 2) DE is another big need to take wynns side I like how phillip daniels stepped up late, but a pass rusher would free up Griffin and daniels for more one on one match ups.
3) PK/P cause Derik Frost and John Hall could not get it done. Hall really messed up in the playoffs with the missed field goal, and kickoffs that only made it too the 35 giving the offense great field postion

So everyone sees the need for a WR and most of us agree an upgrade at DE would be the next most helpful thing helpful. What remains to be decided is if we need at TE. If as some of you say Saunders only uses 1 TE and 1 FB/h-back, then Sellers and Cooley would work, IF we tweek our offense away from Gibbs' system from this year. If we continue like we have, often having an H-back, TE, and FB on the field, then we need someone better than Royal. At least a good blocker if not a receiveing threat as well.

i disagree. i think we should get 4 more pass-catching TE's so we can use the ever-elusive "5 Tight End Formation" on offense. (how you end up with 5 different ends of the offensive line is a little beyond my geometry skills... leave it to saunders to figure that out, he's supposed to be the genius). :D

lol, 5 TE formation. It would be a goalline with no backs basicly, or a shotgun with no WRs.

DE, WR, OG, DB.

DE - Our defense will continue to stay stagnant without one in terms of moving back up to the 3rd overall rank.
WR - David is a #3 WR, he proved that. We need a #2. The new OC will help us out a lot.
OG - We need depth, we'll be lucky to not get any injuries to our linemen.
DB - We can get by without another DB but our guys are getting older. Hopefully Walt will restructure. He's a fine nickel back.

primary needs

Post by old-timer »

WR, DE (could be pass rushing specialist in the mold of Jumpy Geathers), OG, kicker, punter.

WR is obvious to everyone. Terrell Owens without the head case would be perfect. We need a good, tough possession receiver with a nose for the football in the mold of Art Monk, Dwight Clark, Gary Clark, or Larry Centers. Someone you can count on when the going gets tough. Doesn't have to be a speed burner or exceptionally talented, just tough and dependable. In short, a Redskin.

We need a good 3rd down DE pass rusher bad, doesn't need to be an every down player. I believe we are this one player away from being NFL top 3 in defense.

Poor performance of the offense after Thomas's injury showed the line is thin. We have a great back in Portis but he had nowhere to run after Thomas went out. We are short at least two good quality offensive linemen to offset the inevitable injury next year and replace Ray Brown.

Our kicking game really put us behind the 8-ball last year, short kickoffs being the consistent albatross around our neck. Otherwise our special teams are quite excellent.

Where I work we talk about what risks do we see in the future that might make us fail. Once you ID those, you then figure out what can you do to mitigate that risk. Yes, we look for ways to improve the service we provide but we also need to make sure you plan for the unexpected. I'd rather look at the Skins in that light.

The one area of our team that I believe could seriously derail us next year is our depth at OL. If we had had more injuries there, we would have not ended up 10-6. We may have had the worst backup OL group in the league -- certainly of the teams in contention. In some ways I consider us lucky that we didn't suffer more injuries on the OL and sooner in the year. Thomas got hurt near the end of the year, thank goodness. Yes, our guys played through injuries - is that because Buges didn't like what he saw when he looked down the bench? I certainly wasn't impressed with anyone beyond Ray Brown.

If we want to get to 10-6 next year (or even win JUST one more game and maybe get a home game in the playoffs) we must have an OL that doesn't fail us. If Gibbs has any say, Brunnel is our QB...that guy needs time. You could add Owens, Wayne and/or Moulds and it won't matter if Brunnel has pressure.

I know our WR's, after Moss, aren't scary, but did the Chiefs have scary WR's while Al was there? Do the Seahawks or Steelers have a #2 that is really scary? Randal El and Bobby Engram? The reason these two teams are in the SBowl --QB & OL play... The Colts, Cards, and Lions have great WR's - where are they now?

If Saunders comes in and mixes it up (verus running on 1st & 2nd, passing on 3rd and long, and punting on 4th) Brunnel and our Wr's are fine...we have the weapons -- ASSUMING our Oline is good.

Defense: I could argue that Wms doesn't need much to be a top 12 Defense again next year -- even though another young CB and DE/DT for depth purposes would be nice.

Special Teams -- I think Frost is a problem -- he had a few good punts (not games) but he certainly didn't help us in field position. Hall makes too much money for a guy who misses makeable FGs in playoff games and can't get the ball to the 10 on most KO's. Those guys hurt our field postion. A good punt returner would be nice too...but these 3 are things you can get relatively cheap in FA or very late in the draft.

I'd welcome comments...not that this group needs an invitation.

Hkhog- thank you , I agree about Cooley and have said as much.

Now as for team needs ...

I've flip flopped a bunch of times on what we need the most. I agree with CLL on what we need.

DE, OG, WR and CB. I'll add another one -> OT.

1.) OG - is the priority here. Yes we need a dominant DE but with a 2nd round pick I doubt we'll get one. We CAN get a stud OG in the 2nd though and have Dock and him fight it out in camp. Skins should pick one up in the 2nd

2.) DE - yes, CLL and I agree that one is needed. Had we had a first round pick I'd say try to get one there but since we don't and stud interior O-lineman will most likely be available in the 2nd I say wait until the 3rd round to pick one up.

3.) OT - I picked this 3rd since I'm not sold on our OT depth yet (it can change if I see some improvement at which time this slot goes to DE) but a DE could work here with the OT being taken in the 3rd. Look at the Steelers. They are getting it done on offense b/c that line is so dominating. Remember the famed line of which this site is aptly named? Those Hogs were the cornerstone of Gibbs' first run here in DC. Without a dominant O-line, we don't make it to the big game. I'm not sure if we have a 4th rounder but if we do, take OT there. If not, then take a CB or WR in the next round (5th) that we pick and then take a OT after that.

4.) CB - we need depth here. Nuff said. Take this after OT if we have a 4th. If we don't have a 4th take CB in the 5th.

5.) WR - we should be picking up a WR in Free Agency which is why I put this last. I'd rather get a proven commodity at WR then possibly get another Rod Gardner or Michael Westbrook. If we don't sign a FA WR then WR goes in the 3rd round and all picks after that get moved back one round.

This is of course assuming that all goes as planned. Sometimes a player is available when you're ready to pick that you just have to take. But we really do need to draft an OG on Day 1 of the draft. Hopefully one of the stud DE's fall to us in the 2nd but I sincerely doubt it.

obtaining a DE and WR

Post by old-timer »

My guess is Gibbs will trade next year's picks and Patrick Ramsey for the WR and DE we need. He'll try to get O-line depth through the draft. These are the pieces we need for a Super Bowl contender, and he doesn't have time to wait for next year's number one to turn into future years' Heath Shuler or (gag) Michael Westbrook.

Our wish lists are beginning to look like poor chlidren's letters to Santa Claus!

Guys, we are quite a few millions OVER the cap. Sure we can shed a few when Noble, Bowen and a few others are let go...

But even then there is not enough money around to go out on a spending spree. It is not like the good old days. We have to start paying (in cap) the many millions over-spent unwisely by the Danny before Joe came in.

My take is all of the sudden different the more I look at the draft and the costs associated with top picks (not that we have many):

Our success in this draft will lie in the abilityof our team to pick up gems in the later rounds and even walk-ins. Yep, forget about the top rounds. It will come down to good old talent to "discover" gold where everybody sees nothing but waste.

This would not be the first time we discover raw talent later on in our history but would be one of the few times under the Danny.
