Andy Groom cut...

Did any one else see this? I did a search and I don't think I was scooped, but why the change at punter?

I'm surprised, too. Why even worry about our punting unit right now? We've got other things to address.
Groom didn't do too bad against Dallas considering the field position Dallas' punt units gave us.

This is the first time I hear about D. Frost. Upgrading our special teams unit will always be a plus for our field position battles, but I wish the kid would have gotten a little more time. He did well in preseason, but there DID seem to be a drop-off once he was named the starter.

I'm very confused about this move... anyone have any theories on this? Their numbers are very similar.
May #21 never be worn again by another Redskin but may every Redskin play like they are wearing #21 on their backs.

Experience. Frost has a year on Groom. Groom appeared to struggle to put up numbers like he did in the preseason.
Joe has always favored "veterans", so I'm hoping Frost can deliver.

This is another one of those things where I have to come to the conclusion that the coaches know a lot more than I do. That's pretty obvious considering they watch these guys play and practice every day. Their stats seem almost identical but Frost does have a year on Groom. Also Frost is huge, 6'4" 208 lbs. He's got three inches and 25 lbs on Groom so maybe he can really boom it. I thought Groom was pretty good but if it will help the team I'm all for it.
I have to say 24 inside the 20 with ONLY 4 touchbacks is pretty good.

My feeling is that Groom had difficulty dropping some of his punts inside the 20 yard line. I think I remember two instances where we had to punt and his punts sailed into the endzone when Tupa would easily have dropped them inside the 20 with no runback.
Aside from that, maybe the guy just had a bit of a tood.

Of course, the Hataz (in the media) will probably call it instability in the locker room, or something.

Joe will show THEM!!

There was one 4th down during the MNF game, where we had to punt from midfield. I remember looking where the ball was placed, and where Groom was going to be kicking from. The ball was on the Cowboy 42 yard line and Groom kicked it from right around the 50 yard line. That's the type of situational punt where you almost HAVE to hang it high and drop it around the 10 yard line and have the defenders already down there. Well, on that punt, Groom booted the damn thing and it sailed right into the end zone. The thing is, he was trying for hang time but put too much on it and it went into the end zone. Gibbs, as every coach in the NFL is, believes that the battle of field position is one of the most important battles of the game, and giving it to them at the 20 yard line when we could have given it to them around the 5 yard line is a big deal.
I think Groom had a powerful leg, but wasn't able to place it where he wanted to. He just hung it up there and kicked the daylights out of it. Field position is too important to mess around with.

Check out redskins.com and watch Gibbs' most recent press conference. He talks a lot about the punting situation. Here are a few things that stood out:
Came from a football family, dad's a coach
Excellent holder
Danny Smith did lots of research, felt like they were somewhat fortunate w/ some bounces and needed to upgrade
But, the thing that really stood out - he can kickoff! I think he can be a bit of a safety net for Hall if he has to come back before he's 100% and he can definately take some strain off his leg. Gibbs also directly pointed to the whole Akers situation stating that under no circumstances would he make a kicker kickoff unless he was at full strength. He said on kickoffs they have to go all out and it was way too much strain for a guy who was somewhat injured. So, I think that may be the real story here.

Nope but read this:

So it looks like he has an arm. Interesting
