QB CONTROVERSY
OK, it is official: Never invite Steve Spurrier and Joe Theismann to the same dinner party.
Theismann is the ESPN analyst and former Washington Redskins quarterback who this week offered criticism of Spurrier and his handling of Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey during the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
Spurrier first read Theismann’s comments in USA Today, then again in The State on Friday. Theismann said that Ramsey was more comfortable in Joe Gibbs’ offense because the quarterback was not forced to throw the ball down field as he was under Spurrier’s guidance.
"Steve Spurrier would berate Patrick if he threw it to the flat because it wasn’t there down field," Theismann said. "In Joe Gibbs’ offense, if you don’t have it, dump it off. That makes a big difference."
Spurrier came right back at Theismann, without mentioning his name.
"Obviously, after winning eight conference championships, one national championship, leading the nation in scoring in ’96, leading the SEC in total offense and scoring offense almost ever year for 12 years, we did not accomplish all that by teaching the quarterback to force the ball down field," Spurrier said of his highly successful Florida days.
He did not stop there.
"I’m always amused by a few former players who, once they’re handed a microphone, become an authority and expert on everything about football, including coaching," Spurrier said. "Yet, so many of these guys — almost all of them — have never coached a down in their lives."
Yeah, and Spurrier did not have to change the pronunciation of his last name in an attempt to win the Heisman as Theismann did.
