Theismann versus Spurrier

Post by 1niksder »

QB CONTROVERSY

OK, it is official: Never invite Steve Spurrier and Joe Theismann to the same dinner party.

Theismann is the ESPN analyst and former Washington Redskins quarterback who this week offered criticism of Spurrier and his handling of Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey during the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

Spurrier first read Theismann’s comments in USA Today, then again in The State on Friday. Theismann said that Ramsey was more comfortable in Joe Gibbs’ offense because the quarterback was not forced to throw the ball down field as he was under Spurrier’s guidance.

"Steve Spurrier would berate Patrick if he threw it to the flat because it wasn’t there down field," Theismann said. "In Joe Gibbs’ offense, if you don’t have it, dump it off. That makes a big difference."

Spurrier came right back at Theismann, without mentioning his name.

"Obviously, after winning eight conference championships, one national championship, leading the nation in scoring in ’96, leading the SEC in total offense and scoring offense almost ever year for 12 years, we did not accomplish all that by teaching the quarterback to force the ball down field," Spurrier said of his highly successful Florida days.

He did not stop there.

"I’m always amused by a few former players who, once they’re handed a microphone, become an authority and expert on everything about football, including coaching," Spurrier said. "Yet, so many of these guys — almost all of them — have never coached a down in their lives."

Yeah, and Spurrier did not have to change the pronunciation of his last name in an attempt to win the Heisman as Theismann did.

Anyway, winning at college is good, but winning at the Pro level is great. Spurrier doesnt know how that feels, while Theismann has a Superbowl ring.

Thier both idiots.
I have to agree with Thiesman though, he makes a good point about how Patrick was forced to throw downfield and so on... but he should comment on it a little, not come down on the coach publicly so hard I guess.... and spurrier, he shouldnt mention his college credentials in the pro football world... two totally different ball games

If Ramsey had started as a rookie with GIBBS... He would have been in the pro bowl in 04

The name "Mexico" is in reference to Michael Vick's alias Ron Mexico. So he is saying that Ramsey would not have been a pro bowler with these two in the conference.

Thanks, that cleared it up for me. I thought GF was speaking in tongues or something. You know, like the rest of the E-gals fan base.

Ah, yes, Steve Spurrier: another example of the celebrated college QB who took his H-man Trophy right to an NFL bench. And sat until the team dumped him.

Poor Joey T, who merely had a great career in the NFL.

Thanks welch! - I may be wrong about this but I was under the impression that the "media/promo" people at ND came up with the name change hype!

Totally agree about the analogy though and Joe may be a lot of things but he also won the big game as QB for my team!

All the best SS - hope it works out for you back in the minors - no worries here, we have Joe back.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Spurrier is in NO position to compare his portfolio to that of any NFL personnel, player or otherwise. To me, he's just made as big a fool of himself as he did during his two year debacle with the Skins.
Sit back and watch the Redskins.

Absolutely agree with JPF.

That's what I remember. The story was that he originally pronounced his named "Theesman", but the PR department wanted it to rhyme with the trophy.

Of course, I can't point to evidence, and don't want to bother researching a trivial incident from 35 years ago.

Joe T proved himself a fine QB in the CFL and NFL. Steve S proved himself a poor NFL QB.

Spurrier's blabber about his college coaching stats suggest that he's lost his marbles.

Spurrier doesn't have a clue to this day of what the N.F.L. is. Let him continue to quote from his college day's. Theisman was talking N.F.L.

Minors? College FB canbe as hard as NFL. You get TWO weeks of vacation in early January and that is all you use if you try hard as a coach.

I liked Spurrier and still do. I wished he would have won a superbowl with us but everything works out for a reason and I think he will bring S.C. to national prominence. I.M.O.

I think you'll find JT knows quite a lot about being an NFL QB. He found his second calling in the booth and does a pretty sound job. He doesn't need to be an NFL coach to have a valid opinion.

Has Theismann ever coached at the college or NFL level? If not, then maybe he shouldn't be telling college and NFL coaches how to do their jobs.

Remember what Warren Sapp did when he went nuts on Mike Sherman that one time? "Put a jersey on!" Sapp didn't think Mike Sherman had the right to criticize his play on the field if Sherman had never played professional football.

Theismann has never coached college or professional football, and Spurrier has every right in the world to be irritated at Theismann for criticizing his coaching techniques when it is crystal clear that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

It's all hindsight for Theismann right now, and for somebody who never, ever has anything of worth to say, I'm not surprised that Theismann went and made a comment like this one.

ROTFALMAO did you just say broke leg boy is a good tv analyst? ROTFALMAO

and yes he's still an idiot. and after being tortured with him on sunday night football showing his ignorance, i don't think anything that comes out of joey t's mouth is 'valid'. i rate him right behind collinsworthless in the 'most likely to bore me to sleep with his ignorant comments' category.

thanks for the superbowl performance joey, now please go away.

Fair enough, you're entitled to your opinion. I look back with great fondness when Joe was leading our offence and taking us to two SBs. I "discovered" this great game in 1980 just months before Joe Gibbs took over and appreciate JTs efforts.

I may also not always agree with what he says but he brings great enthusiasm to the booth.

The early 80s was my favourite era and it saddens me to hear other Redskins fans belittle his efforts and no little success.
