Sound Familiar?

Post by JPM36 »

Heading into 2004, the San Diego Chargers were:

- ranked at or near the bottom of the league by every major publication's "Power Rankings"

- led by an elderly coach whom many were saying was past his prime

- defensively lead by a coordinator who used to be the head coach of the Buffalo Bills 8)

- on offense featuring a stud young RB who was asked to carry the load every game

- puzzling experts everywhere by taking a QB in the first round despite having used a high draft choice on another QB just 3 years earlier, and having a veteran backup on the roster.

- an absolute afterthought in terms of the playoffs

That team shocked the world by going 12-4 and winning the AFC West, as the QB they had taken 3 years earlier put together a Pro Bowl season.

Yeah, actually it does. BUT there are two differences:
Ramsey is not DBrees, at least not yet
Their veteran must have been 10 times better than Brunell, even if he didn't play at all

Other than that, I'm looking forward to the season!

Well thats kindof the point. BEFORE last season Drew Brees was Patrick Ramsey. A highly drafted QB who hadn't yet proven himself. Then after they drafted Rivers and his job was in danger he blew up.

Don't want to make it to harsh, but I don't agree with you at all. I would agree with you like 10 months ago (when I first joined the site), but not now. It's okay.....I was pessimistic....and still am...BUT the guys at this site will let you see the light. It's not that bad....and BTW, Ramsey does not suck.

Oh yeah, welcome to the board!

I think it's funny how we got rid of Marty and his coaching style, only to replicate his recipe for success three seasons later. Oh well, at least our current "general" is a more likeable guy with a better resumé.

As for Ramsey, let's give him a full season at the helm before reaching a final verdict on the young man. My 2 cents
Back and better than ever!

i mean ramsey is a nice guy , likeable guy but in 3 years he has shown me that he still throwns dumb ints, and takes to many sacks,

i just feel liek jason campbell is better right now already, its like say u have a 1999 ford truck you drive alot and you love that car, but it break down ,and you just brought a 2005 cadilac what are you going to drive more now the old 99 truck or the 2005 cadilac, I am going with the lac

that is a terrible analogy... football players are human, which are completely unlike cars, or any machine for that matter. there is no way jason campbell is better than patrick ramsey right now. its possible he has more talent, but a better qb, no way. and i say this for one reason.... experience. jason campbell is a rookie. if he starts this year he will play like a rookie. it would be a bad idea.

Welecome to the board batman2k5

What you've said is right for the most part, but you left quite a bit out. Like the 1st Gints game Ramsey came off the bench (after getting little to no reps in practice). He progressed steadly as the season went on. A quick search will give you the reasons why most of us are so called Ramsey lovers.

We Ramsey lovers also hope that J Campbell will grow into a starting QB. Right now he's part of the future. That is why he was drafted the future.

But we Ramsey lovers don't know what the Ramsey contract situation will be next offseason. So Jason will bring some clarity to the QB position regardless how Ramsey performs.

For the record we Ramsey lovers are really Redskin lovers and Ramsey just happens to be the starting QB.

Well thats kindof the point. BEFORE last season Drew Brees was Patrick Ramsey.

actually, that is not true. ramsey is currently a MUCH better quarterback than brees was at the end of 2003. the stats back that up:

BREES 2003: in 11 starts, threw 11 TDs and 15 INTs, for a total of 2108 yards and a 67.5 passer rating.

RAMSEY 2004: in 7 starts, threw 8 TDs and 6 INTs, for a total of 1313 yards and an 85.6 passer rating.

in fact, in ramsey's 2nd season (2003) he was already better than brees in his 3rd season:

RAMSEY 2003: in 11 starts, threw 14 TDs and 9 INTs, for a total of 2166 yards and a 75.8 passer rating.

***ALL RAMSEY HATERS, PLEASE NOTE THAT IN HIS STARTS, RAMSEY HAS THROWN ABOUT 32% MORE TDs (22) THAN INTERCEPTIONS (15). *** so i really don't want to hear any more crap about his INTs, thanks. that is not based in a complete understanding of reality. he threw a bunch of picks earlier in the season when he had to go in and come from way behind. DUH.

anyways, the point is comparing ramsey to brees is actually an insult to ramsey. ramsey is much more talented than brees, and will continue to become a better QB every season. and within the next year or two he will become experienced enough that he will rocket past brees.

how can anyone say campbell is the better qb? He was participating in 7 on 7 drills...Doesn't exactly merit people saying he has exceptional pocket presence...Until I see Mr. Campbell prove himself in a game situation I will maintain that Ramsey is the better QB now

it is not optimism, i am being objective.

ramsey threw .85 INTs per start in 2004
brees threw 1.36 INTs per start in 2003
that means ramsey threw about 42% fewer INTs per game. that is "much" better.

ramsey threw about 1.29 TDs per start in 2004.
brees threw 1 per game in 2003.
that is about a 22% difference-not as much better than the INT rate but still statistically significant.

ramsey had a 66.6% completion rate per start in 2004.
brees had a 57.6% completion rate.
since most QB's percentage rates fall within a 30 degree range (40%-70%), and ramsey's was 10 degrees higher than brees's, that is really a full 33% higher in terms of the actual "normal" range for QBs.

so, statistically, ramsey was significantly better than brees after their respective 3rd years in the league.
