To the Redskins fans not from the D.C. area

I was born in MD then lived in VA for a while...
My Dad was a Skins fan for most of his life so it is an Inherited trait for me.

I love these stories... I grew up in NOVA and listened to my father yell and scream at the TV on Sundays while I was in my room doing homework. We used to drive back from skiing with my dad and listen to Sonny and Sam on the radio... I live in Boston now and have an unhealthy obsession with the Skins... I also love the O's!!

Please give me some support, though, Patriots country is a tough place to live right now!!

I'm still unbelievably excited that Joe Gibbs is back!!

i grew up on capitol hill and have been a skins fan since i was very young... not to say i'm not so young now. i'm in brooklyn now, having graduated from college last year. i was just a month shy of my seventh birthday when superbowl XXII came on. i'll never forget cheering with my friends and making fun of john elway... my mom got me the nfl films superbowl video, and i seriously used to watch it every saturday or anytime i was home sick from school for most of my childhood. no turning back from there. i thought i was going to be the new timmy smith.

I'm from Southern VA. I honestly become a Redskins fan because I like Indian characters. When I saw their logo, I just instantly became a fan, plus I like the history and the other things about the Redskins. As far as the Redskins go, they're my favorite team when it comes to Indians.

For the record, I had to endure living in Dallas from 1991 until 1994. Ugh. I worked at a Krogers in Arlington, Texas and one week they had Troy Aikman, Emmit Smith and Jay Novachek (I spelled that wrong but who cares?) stop by the store to sign autographs. Assuming that we were all Cowboys fans, we were told we could wear football gear as opposed to the typically sexy Kroger uniforms.
I wore a Redskins hat, Redskins T-shirt (the black Capital Defense shirt) and Redskins shoes (the shoes were horendously ugly). I made a point of strutting past the table where they were signing autographs so much that Troy Aikman complained. I was given the option to change clothes or go home for the day.
I went home. One of the proudest moments of my life.

That's by far the best story on this board!

The person who introduced me to football (6-7 years ago) is a die hard Redskins fan...whenever we talked about football, he always used the Redskins as an example. That's the reason why I fell in love with the Skins eventhough I've lived in NYC all my life...

I was born in DC and raised in Maryland. My pops raised me a redskins fan since the day I was born. I currently live in Las Vegas because I am in the Air FOrce and stationed here. To all who are wondering, Vegas isn't all it's cracked up to be. If you have a couple thousand dollars to blow it's a nice place to visit but If I had it my way I'd be back in DC or Maryland where a redskins fan belongs.

I lived most of my life in Northern VA. Redskins fan from the first game I watched on TV with my Dad. When DH got transferred to upstate NY, I told him we had to get a satellite dish because I wasn't giving up my 'skins! He knew I wasn't kidding either!

I was recently notified that my name was called for Season Tickets, and will be making the drive down there for all the home games next year, as well as the Philly, NYG, and Pittsburgh games on the road.

I'm a firm believer that your team chooses you, not the other way around. Sort of a fate/personality/compatibility thing. I grew up in the metro-Boston area, spent most of my life in New England, and yet I bleed burgundy and gold. I think I was impressed watching Superbowl XVII, how the skins not only won, but handled themselves in a professional manner. I have a distinct memory of screaming at the TV (at 12 years old) a year later, why would anyone call a screen deep in your own side of the field with time running out in the half. When I was depressed for weeks afterwards, I knew I was in too deep, and would be a skins fan forever.

So much so that when I graduated from college I moved down to the Frederick area, just so I could get the games on TV every week, rather than having to watch the frickin' giants. I eventually moved back, but still get the games on NFL Sunday Ticket (the past few years, I've been wondering if this is a blessing or a curse).

As an aside, the Redskins had a part in my marriage. My wife and I started dating in February 1991, and throughout that season, I made her wear little Redskin helmet earings for all the games. After they won the 'bowl that year, I knew we were meant to be together. Kind of like Casablanca.

BossHog introduced me to football in 1992 -- I watched my first Superbowl that year, Joe Gibbs coached The 'Skins to victory, then BossHog and I went on our first date 2 days later! <awwww> (I can hear y'all now!)

Obviously, BossHog is a HUGE 'Skins fan, and myself being rather football retarded, , who else would you expect me to root for???? And now I've been to Training Camp, met players, and know more about football/Redskins than I ever though possible!

I was born in DC, at old Garfield Hospital, just down the third-base line from Griffith Stadium. In the '50s, you were born as Senators fans and Redskins fans, win or lose, and mostly lose. Didn't matter.

I began to learn the players' names a year or so after Sammy Baugh retired, so I grew up on Eddie Lebaron, Gene Brito, the "papoose platoon" (=Bosseler, Sutton, and Podoley). Pain, loss, loyalty. We rooted for the Redskins, through the Kuharich, Nixon, McPeak (underrated coach), and Otto Graham eras. I was about 21 before they had a winning season, and maybe 23 before they got to a playoff game.

But, ah, how great it was, after all those losing seasons, to have the Allen-Pardee-Gibbs era. Even the little blip in 1980, when Pardee's last team went 6-10. We knew that they would be back.

Great moments? Bobby Mitchell taking a short pass, and bobbing, weaving, dancing, reversing, and leaving the invincible Clevand Browns clawing dust. Sonny popping the ball to Mitchell, Taylor, or Smith. Lombardi discovers Larry Brown, and finally the Redskins have a running game to complement Sonny. One game against Dallas in '72, when Dallas jumped off to a 13-0 lead, and Sonny calmly hit Jerry Smith for 20 yards, then picked the Cowboys apart, playing like there was all the time in the world, and the score was tied. Clincher play: Charlie Harraway swings left end, and Larry Brown throws a wipe-out block that cleared him all the way to the endzone.

Ahhhh.

And Gibbs.

I've lived in and around New York for 35 years, but that doesn't matter. When the New Senators left town, it only made the Redskins more important.

I became one in 1976 when I was about 7 years old. Their helmet was what hooked me. Kilmer was still QB and Theismann was his backup. George Allen was still coach. Then things got a little rough during late 70's, early 80's until you know who showed up. Just like another post said, I just got spoiled in H.S. and college with the winning and just thought that all they'd do forever is win. Figured Petibon would just keep the tradition going. Well 4-12 didn't work. Turner comes along and slowly gets them up to respectability and blows a 7-2 record in 96 to a 9-7 no playoff finish. bla,bla,bla....anyways, besides Brad Johnson and 99, we've pretty much stunk.
Pounding Detroit and almost (should have and I think would have if Brad Johnson wouldn't have thrown up the duck that Lynch intercepted) beating TB in the playoffs was the best feelings I've had as a Redskin since January 92.
I'm stoked hardcore now, man, got goosebumps and stuff when I heard about Gibbs and can't wait to see if he can bring back the feelings and enjoyment we all had in the 80's and early 90's!!

My loyalty to The Skins comes from when I was a child. I lived in Utah of all places. Watching a team manhandle the Cowgirls was great. I've always hated them for some reason and to see a team dominate the was wonderful. Those were the good years. I'm stuck with them for about 20 years, and will continue to do so until I am long gone. The past 10 have been a little rough, watching all of that talent go to waste. There was a glimmer of hope last year with Ramsey showing some skills, and with Lewis coaching that great D. A few more years with Lewis would have made a HUGE difference. I am SOOO pumped about this coming season. All Hail To Coach Gibbs!! I live in Ohio now and made on friend in the DC area. I will be attending my first Skins game this year: one at FedEx field and the other when they'll finally be coming to Cleveland (should be an ez win...

I grew up in south Florida, first time I saw the 'Skins was in SB VII against Miami, and I was hooked. Ended up being stationed in Washington when I was in the military, at the very beginning of the Gibbs era, stayed there after I got out, officially because of a lack of work back home, but really because I didn't want to move away from the 'Skins! I live in DE now, so it's harder to get the games, but I still bleed Burgundy & Gold!

i,ve been a fan since joe gibbscame the first time but not the fan i am today . born in minot n dakota andraised in durham nc salsbury that part of the woods. but to say how long have i been a fan of the redskins i would say pre gibbs then got really heavy into it ever since.

i recall the over the hill gang and so forth until the gibbs days kicked in full blast i became bigtime diehard while hating those crygirls.
then as i was following the skins i became a diehard joe gibbs fan as well ,cause i watched him closely espc how he coaches and how he dealt with the people in general (motivates as well). so going back to when joe retired in late 1992 aerly 93 i was able to meet him while he was in nascar in charlotte. got his autograph sweet (a nfl racing football with his signature on it while i got my picture taken alongside of him as we were standing in the back of the interstate batteries merchandise trailer.

so i,m a die hard gibbsfan to say the least as well as redskins fan. born in n dakota raised in durham nc ,salsbury area and currently live on the river in chocowinity nc !
