To the Redskins fans not from the D.C. area
I've notice a lot of you are from "out of town" for those of you not from D.C....How did you come about being a Redskins fan?
I live in DE, but I was born and raised in D.C.

1979...
My uncle was a Syracuse fan. Used to take us to some of the games. He used to rave about this one reciever, and told me, "See that guy right there ? He's from White Plains, down by us. He's gonna be a Jet !"
Well, I didn't really have a favorite team, but I really didn't like the Jets, because my uncle would come over and turn off whatever I was watching (in 1979, I was 11. It was probably "Adam-12" or "Emergency!") to watch his stupid Jets.
I remember his dejection when his WR didn't go to NY, who had the #2 overall pick. They needed a WR, and there were only two good ones. They took the one from Texas, Lam Jones.
Oh, he was livid. That means, I was thrilled. I looked to see where his receiver went. He went to Washington with the 18th pick.
His name ? Ah, I'll leave you hanging there.

You know I really cant tell you why I started to like the redskins. It started when I was in 7th grade and my whole family always talked about the cowboys because i am from Texas. I started following the redskins and for the past 6 or seven years I have been a die hard skins fan. I constantly check the latest news to see what transactions the skins have made but they dont show much about the skins in Texas.
I live in the Dallas area but was raised in West Texas where the fans are more radical than the ones in Dallas. I was initailly a Eagles Fan in 1980 when I began watching football. I really liked Jaworski and Harold Carmicheal.
My father hated Dallas and maybe that is why I started watching the Redskins because they were really nasty to Dallas. I was only eight, and I dont know why I fell in love with Washington but it was probably a mixture of their uniforms, their band and fight song, or maybe it was the fact that they shoved the ball down their opponents throats with no recourse. I really loved the physical play of the redskins. When you play this sport and the other team knows that you are going to run and they cant stop it, that just takes the heart right out of you!!!
I graduated high school in 92 and that was when this losing started for me. I really took for granted the years of winning because when I was growing up all the redskins were to me is a dominant team. The last ten or so years have been real low and just made me appreciate my youth all the more!!!

I live in Dallas now, but I grew up in Virginia. My whole family comes from the Maryland area, so I've always loved the Terps and the 'Skins. My first live professional football game was the NFC Championship game between Washington and Dallas at RFK before Super Bowl XVII. I had been watching the 'Skins on TV since I was old enough to understand what was going on, but this game changed my life. It was the most exciting event I've ever attended. Watching Dexter kill Danny White and Riggo run wild are still some of my fondest memories. Now that I live in Dallas, it is my mission to piss off Dallas fans, players, and anyone else involved in that God forsaken organization. I go cheer on the 'Skins in Dallas every year, and I try to go to their hotel and meet some of them. The last few years have been really tough out here, but I have hope for the immediate future. The Gibbs/Parcells matchups were the best games to watch in the 80's, and now we get them twice a year again. I can't wait!! Joe is going to make the fat tuna's head spin!!
oops....sorry!

I live in a Rural area in PA, when I was growing up, at the age of I think it was 5 or 6 we always played cowboys and indians, I also wanted to be on the indians side, since I love shooting a bow and arrow, and always thought that the cowboys cheated by having the guns, my family bleeds Black and Gold, Steeler country, so when I first watched football, I watched a team with and Indian on the helmet, and ever since that glorius day I am a Redskin fan for life, now some 25 years later, and now I know why I always hated the cowboys players, see life does throw some wierd twists in it.

Marc, you don't have to sugar-coat here. Take off the "kid gloves". Who's your team ?

It's always great to read something from a die-hard. It gives life meaning.

i live in NC, which used to be skins country till '95. (panthers expansion) i'd seen my dad watching football before, but was too young to remember, and the game that stuck out was a SB. one where my dad was cheering for a team that wore burgandy and gold, and had an MVP named doug williams. it was one of the best times i ever remember having with my dad. we had the best time sitting there at home on a sunday evening, cheering against denver, and for the REDSKINS. i guess i was a bit of a fair weather fan at the time,(i wouldn't have wanted to cheer for the losers) but hell, i was only ten, so what would you expect? but i never left, have stuck around the past 11 years, so i hope i've paid my dues. it would have been so easy just to say "uncle" and become a panther fan..... but i didn't like the panthers, i was a redskin fan and i knew it.

I'm from the great South. Hemisphere. As in Australia.
Played a game called Paydirt. Coached the skins from 1980 to 1987 in a competition.
Like Joe - once you coach the skins there is really only one team for you
As an interesting side thought - In our local football competition my favourite team (Adelaide Crows) had a favoured son return to coach (called him the Saviour as well) - won 2 consecutive Grand Finals (our version of Superbowls) the first 2 years back
I believe "lightning" can strike twice.
I believe

Born and raised in Delaware, I just started watching the Redskins in 1974 (when I was 11 years old) because I liked watching QB Billy Kilmer and later WR Danny Buggs, and I hate to admit this, I also really liked their colors!
Been following them ever since!

I was 12 years old in 1988. One night I was flipping through the channels on TV and found the Super Bowl XXII pre-game show on. I had never really gotten into pro football before but decided that I would check it out anyway. After watching the commentators sizing up the skins and broncos, I decided that I would root for the team in burgandy and gold. After watching Doug Williams and the gang whip up on Denver all night long, I decided that I now had a reason to watch pro football. I have been a die-hard skins fan ever since.

Born and raised a little south of D.C. Grew up in the small town of Pulaski, Va. My first memory of football was watching Billy Kilmer float those wounded ducks down the field. Loved the defenses composed of Coy Bacon, Chris Hanburger, Diron Talbert and others. Live in S. Carolina now but never miss a opportunity to let everyone around me know who the real America Team is. Best memory... Superbowl 17, 4th and 1, counter trey left to the Diesel for a 47yd TD! AWESOME!!!! It's not really the SUPERBOWL unless the Redskins are in it. There has only been one team for me, and that's the way it will always be. Welcome back Joe, bring us back to where we belong. This is my first post and the site looks outstanding! I'm looking forward to being a part of Hog Heaven Family.

I went to a military academy for a couple of years and my first game was the NFC Championship with Dallas - I think I was swayed for two reasons - the Skins were the local team and the Dallas fans were acting like jerks - but I started following them religiously the next year and have been there ever since.

The JC's had a bus trip going to see the redskins and it was the last game Jim Brown played in DC stadium. I went to see Jim Brown but I have been a Redskin fan since this game.

It was Superbowl 17 , I was 10 years old living in Va.I had to go to work with my mother who worked at a bar waiting tables, she didnt have a sitter for me so I sat in a corner booth and watched the game. There was one guy there who took offense to the presence of a child and was being obnoxious about it, he also happened to be a "fish" fan I remember this because even at 10 years old I knew they were mammals. So needless to say I enjoyed the heck out of watching the Hogs and Diesel run up and down their backs.I fell in love with football and the Skins all in the same night.Ive been here ever since as a fan ,even though Ive Lived all over the country and the last few years Ive dreaded the Question "so,whose your team"even so my answer is always THE REDSKINS!!!

Grew up in DC, watching the 'skins (my Mom is 70, and still fanatical). I go back far enough to remember Sam and Sonny when they were at the top of their gamed. Lenny Haus, Charley Taylor, Bobby Mitchell, Jerry Smith, Brig Owens, Larry Brown, Charley Harroway and ... Pat Fischer.

I was born in Fairfax, Va., and lived in a small townhouse in Burke. When my father found out I was (and still am) a boy, he painted my room. The colors? What else? Burgundy and gold.
For the record, I had to endure living in Dallas from 1991 until 1994. Ugh. I worked at a Krogers in Arlington, Texas and one week they had Troy Aikman, Emmit Smith and Jay Novachek (I spelled that wrong but who cares?) stop by the store to sign autographs. Assuming that we were all Cowboys fans, we were told we could wear football gear as opposed to the typically sexy Kroger uniforms.
I wore a Redskins hat, Redskins T-shirt (the black Capital Defense shirt) and Redskins shoes (the shoes were horendously ugly). I made a point of strutting past the table where they were signing autographs so much that Troy Aikman complained. I was given the option to change clothes or go home for the day.
I went home. One of the proudest moments of my life.

My folks were posted to DC from England in 1980. I remember my dad sending newspaper cuttings to me at boarding school, although it was the end of the Jack Pardee era. Went out there for the first time at Xmas 1980 and became a die-hard fan.
I then grew up with the first Gibbs era. Looking forward to as much success second time around.
