"Washington's need at corner is based on free agency, as their own Fred Smoot has stated vehemently that he does not wish to return."

Wow, that's the first I've heard that, thought I'd share it. :?

Smoot will not be back, he will take less money and sign with someone else its about the money, the teams offer was fair, i guess he has been listening to Champ to long, let him go,Williams will play without him.

I don't remember reading anything where Smoot is quoted as saying he wants to leave. Sounds like someeone at NFL Draft Blitz may be getting a little loose with the conjecture.

Having said that, the Skins have made a fair offer to him and if he leaves, so be it.

Pac-man is a good pick at #9. Extremely athletic. But I still think the offense needs to be addressed more than the D. Williams has been raving about Wilds so I'm not sure they would go with a CB even if Smoot leaves. Man, I'm gonna miss him if he does go. Say what you want Smoot has major heart!

At #9 in the 3rd round? :hmm:

Ok, smartypants. Let me clarify my statement. Corner would not be my choice at #9.

If you are going to pick a corner, however, at #9 yes he would be a good choice. I've watched him play his entire college career. All he does is make plays. And I'm pretty sure Rolle (the undisputed #1) won't be on the board by then.

Smoot has never said he didn't want to be back... ever. In fact it was the opposite - he'd like to be in DC, but wasn't sure the Skins could afford him. He could stick - we'll see.

There is good depth at CB this year, even into the third round there could be some great depth.

Turning down a $10 million offer doesn't really scream loyalty to your team.

I'm pretty disappointed in Smoot. That seems like a good offer. Plus the chance to play for the team that drafted you in a town where you are arguably the most popular player.

Its too bad. I'll miss Smoot if we can't bring him back.

Yeah, but...

When you compare it to the Danny's profit, which equals at least 10x as much, a couple more million in bonus money seems like pennies.

He's also gotta think about loyalty to his family, and future generations. I know it might sound silly, but that's the nature of the "business". Is he worth $13 million?? I don't think so.

I hope he does leave, we dont need a one man atmosphere around the defense. + we did fine in the Minn. game.

I agree. I'd like for this defense to evolve into a unit similar to the Patriots'. (Inspired by "Drumline") "ONE TEAM, ONE SOUND."

Get off Smoot about turning down the $10M, and it doesn't say anything about his loyalty. What it says is his agent has convinced him that his market value is higher than that and Smoot wants to get paid. I can't blame him. Now if he tests the market and signs for the same money or less elsewhere, trhen you can say he isn't loyal.

This is the proble that was created when Danny over-paid others. If he over-pays others, Why not me? It is a reasonable logic BUT not now under Gibbs and GW.

Maybe Smoot can go to Denver. Do the broncos have a good center or a great DE for a trade?
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

Smoot will not be back bc Gibbs sees he is not team material... money has everything to do with this as far as pro sports goes. theres no question as to how to put together the
best team ...NE with their less than "payed" players and the 'skins of '91 are the same. THEY LOVE WHO THEY PLAY FOR. THEY LOVE EACHOTHER. AND THEY CANNOT LOSE. POINT BLANK

what on earth does that have to do with it?

I just love how sports owners are the only businessmen on the planet who aren't allowed to realize a retrun on thir investment. Danny paid 800 MILLION dollars for the right to earn that profit.

... and being that his constant knock is HOW much he spends... how can he win with commentary like this? You think the guy's an idiot for paying Arrington, but you want him to pony up WHATEVER for Smoot?

Whatever.

I'm not one that begrudges Snyder for doing what ANY good business person would do... try earn his investment back.

... and that has NOTHING to do with whether or not Snyder should pony up the cash for Smoot... he shouldn't... Fred ain't worth that much.

... and if he does... in two years we'll be listening to your rants about how Fred ain't worth all that and how much you hate the guy and blah, blah, blah... just like your tiresome L.A rants.

... oh wait a minute... now I see your motivation for the big contract signing.... eternal whining.

As i see it... this is all posturing until something is done. if Smoot leaves after a $10M offer was made... we'll know he wasn't that core a Redskin to begin with or he'd have taken the FAIR contract to stay with his 'beloved' team. if Fred stays and everything gets worked out... it'll all be water under the bridge and just considered nothing more than bargaining tactics.

My 2 cents

I agree wholeheartedly BH. Snyder paid record money to get the Redskins. He sold off his extremely successfull business interests to buy the team. He did it because he loved the team. Granted, he charges a lot for most things. It is a business and he maximizes profits wherever he can. But, he counteracts in in two ways. Two very important ways. First and foremost, he actually spends a ton of money on the team. Trying to make it better and get us back to the superbowl. Mebbe he hasn't spent it in the wisest ways, but he's learning and Joe is showing him the right way. The 2nd thing is that he listens to the fans. He knows what WE mean to this team and that the team is just as important to us, as it is to him.

Cooke Jr. ran this team into the ground, and while he's taking his damn sweet time, Snyder is bringing us back to the top. I love Snyder. I don't get to go to the games(so I don't have to pay the ticket prices), but I'm sure even the fans that go to the games agree that whatever it takes for us to get back to the show is completely worth it.

Also agree on Smoot. Smoot is either posturing(hopefully) or champ and peion have gotten to him. Either way, the Redskins will be fine...
