http://www.ffmastermind.com/designations.php

apparently we'd have to franchise him to get picks for him. otherwise we just have right of first refusal with a transition tag which means we can match any offers to retain the player, but get no compensation if we don't.

Franchising this year was $7,229,000 for WRs. Not great for us, but not out of the question for 1 season, and we would likely deal him anyway which would mean at least a 1st this season and a 3rd next season which is pretty standard.

I'm pretty confident that we will franchise him unless the numbers are impossible to do.

Hey everyone,
Just out of curiousity why is everyone content with letting smoot go? He wants number 1 money, so? Will anyone deny the guy played his guts out this year. I think people are sour on him for two reasons. One the scheme we have now suggests that we need players not stars, I agree; however if everyone here thinks we will have this defensive staff together forever, they are dead wrong. We don't even know if we will keep both our guys (blanche and williams) this off season. Second I think people don't consider Smoot a 'true redskin'. I have to say I completely disagree with that. Smoot is the guy taking to the fans and the media. Smoot is the guy noticably upset when we lose, he is a core guy. He is a locker room presence, and we don't have to talk about what he does on the field. Playing hurt most of hte year, improving his tackling and helping the skins to the 3rd best D in the league.

Just my thoughts but I'll end with: If it ain't broke don't fix it!

I see where you're coming from and part of me, and I'm sure others, use to feel the same way.... but alot of those thoughts and feelings went out the door...when Smoot decided he need to get his big payday.... it has been reported he was offered top 10 CB money.... I can name atleast 7 CB that are atleast better than him:

Woodson
Law
Springs
Winfield
Bailey
McAlister
Barber

and there's a handful of other CB that are debatably, just as good or better than Smoot....but still the payday wasn't good enough for him...

I love the heart, and the attitude... but I believe more so that that's for himself and his image more than his love for of the Redskins and the organization...

If in the end, I'm sure most of us would love him to stay... but if he leaves.. he's not gonna be missed or be a determinant to this defense

I think we can all understand Fred Smoot a little bit better by reviewing what he said on his exit interview with reporters. "Well you know, ive been talking with Champ and he said that its not about the player its about if the team wants you." Well that fellow Redskins was enough for me to understand where he stands. I understand that people want to be paid, but it would be one thing if we would have low balled him, but wouldn't you think that if you were a player on Joe Gibbs'Redskins that in order for the team to sign who we have to sign in order to improve that some people will have to give the "home team discount" on resigning and some will have to restructure which we'll see with Chris Samuels. I love Smoot, and his attitude but at what point has he proven that he should be paid Woodson, Law even Bailey money. Even the pros agree, Springs had a better year than Smoot did, so why on earth should he get a contract that goes well and beyond what Shawn made this year. You want to be a Redskin, show it in your actions. Trust me Smoot, the team wants you but it seems you'd be happier playing somewhere else for an extra 4 million. Hey maybe he'll end up in Denver so he and Champ can make the BIG difference for them next year. Unless they play INDY again!!! WAR REDSKINS! OUT!

If you think Smoot is a true redskins and wants to play for us
then he would take the 10 freaking million instead of the 14 million.
you heard what lavar said on Comcast last night

I didn't hear what LeVar said on Comcast...did he say, he could give Smoot 6 mil once he convinces the Skins that they "ripped" him off...

In this day of caponomics, you can NOT pay everyone top dollar...you must have some players on the roster that are making a lot less money. We already overpaid for Springs, we overpaid for LeVar (less the 6 mil, of course), we gave Washington and Griffin a bunch of money, Wynn is due to make 4 mil in 05, Bowen and Taylor are making some cash, Barrow got a nice deal. If we don't take some fiscal action now, our 2006 roster will be a who's who ...as in, who are these guys? I don't believe we should pay Smoot a 10 mil bonus. Let our current guys do the job, draft another young CB if necessary. I don't want to overpay Pierce either. Our 2006 cap is very very ugly. We can't wait until after 2005 to fix it either - we must start now.

We need to change out 10-12 guys this year - plus a couple others if we trade away (Gardner) or release some guys (maybe McCants, Rock, Wynn, etc...) Sign 2-3 "cheaper" FA's like Walt Harris, and hang onto our draft picks...stay out the bidding for big name-big contract guys. We can't afford them and I don't believe that we need them either. Let's try the NE way - not the SF way. Look at them now.

Smoot simply is not a shutdown corner. He's not as good as Champ and he's not a shutdown corner. Smoot is your average quality corner. He does not deserve #1 anything. He does deserve an increase but definately not #1 money.

Lets plug in Walt Harris or Wilds and let them loose. We'll have a good pass rush next season which will alleivate some of the burden IF Smoot wants to act stupid.

Wilds is not good
people say hes doing good for a rookie, the guy is 26 years old.
he played a couple of plays and showed that he was sorta good. same with a.brown he returned one kick for 66 yards, that doesnt mean he should play kick returner, if anything thrash should be kick return

No way I want Abraham right now, he is clearly not a team player. Our D is so good because we have guys who go in and work hard every day and always want to play and play hard. Abraham doesn't care about his team and he has a chance to win a Super Bowl! He would rather just take the money though. He will not go far in Gregg Williams' defense.

Wilds is 23. Don't know who you're thinking of. He has been solid every time he has been put in on special teams and defensive action.

Brown had a 39 yarder the week before. He played the same way when he was in Buffalo, speedy and used his knack to find holes to the best of his abilities.

Bringing in Musgrave was a great move. 1) he will update our offense with some youthful energy and ideas. 2) He will get Brunell back on track and since were stuck with him, this move just makes sense.

Here's what I think we should do...........

I think we’ll pick up a few players in free agency after resigning most of our own.
Smoot is appears to be gone, but that door may be still open (I’m in the minority but I think he’ll resign)
If not ……. drafting Rolle wouldn’t be a bad idea (if Williams doesn’t find a good young FA before the draft).

We need to upgrade both lines
On offense we should pick up a center and a guard, Josh Warren has played both positions so maybe that will be done in free agency.
Samuels needs to extend his contract to free some cap space but and the repairs to the interior of the line. We can get by with Dockery as the starter next year but a upgrade at both guard spots will help. Raymer needs to be challenged for the starting center spot he shouldn’t be just replaced

On the defense we don’t need much, a pass rushing DE would pretty much do it. It really doesn’t matter weather it though the draft or free agency as long as they produce.
Mathias Kiwanuka would have been my choice but he did the smart thing. John Abraham would be a good pick up in free agency but he’ll want to much so I was thinking Chike Okeafor

The receiver position needs to be upgrade….
Gardner for a Ham sandwich would be a upgrade BUT
I think both McCants and Gardner will be traded. Gardner before the draft, and D-Mac late in the off season. Or I could be totally wrong about McCants.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh would be a very good pick up in free agency and would cost us Porter, Burress or Moss money.

DE, OL (G and C), and WR are our biggest needs depending on Smoot you can add CB to the list

Our main problem this year was our offensive production and Gibbs is already working on that.
I lot of people here don’t understand the hiring of Bill Musgrave, but it seems like it will be a good idea. The west coast offense isn’t something we’ll be seeing this year. Gibbs said he was going to take apart his offense, look at everything, and see what happens. I think he decided to take apart no only his offense but also the one that wasn’t so popular the first time he was here.
I’m sure we’ll continue to see the same Joe Gibbs run based offense 50 Gut, lots of motion, and those slow developing counter treys. But we will see more downfield passing. Everyone says Musgrave is ding & doink but his offense averaged 6.46 ypc compared to our 5.59 – He had 5009 total yards (3159 passing) to our 4397 total yards (2632) So he will bring something to the table even if it’s only new ideas. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the shotgun a few times this year.

wilds is 25 years old i just checked. portis is 23 and its his 3rd season. so yeha wilds is pretty old for a rookie. so that shouldnt be an excuse. and id rather us sign a cb in free agency and get a wr and de or a center in the draft

well ok weel give brown a couple of chances, because u cant determine anything with such little evidence
so we test trash and brown and we see.

I have two words for you. Darrell Green. Darrell was one of the best CBs in the league for years. He never made good money until his last few years. He had plenty of opportunity to leave the Redskins and get paid. He didn't though becuase he loved the redskins. I'm not sure about this, but didn't he even take a pay cut so we could sign someone one time?

If Smoot doesn't come to his senses, I say good riddance. Love him, but some things aren't meant to be...
