Let me tell you something. That stuff is out of this world.
Don't get me wrong. I still use ketchup on my fries, at a fast food place. But for tater tots...you have to go with the Malt Vinegar.
Yeah... I grew up Germany, and they use to sell the french fries (Pomfrets? is what they called them) and they'd sell them with Malt Vinegar & Mayo... I would be like "Ketchup, Please" and they would all point and laugh at me...
Damn those Nazis....

I knew Canada was gonna send us something better than Anne Murray and cold fronts sooner or later.
Oh, Shania Twain. Awesome export, Boss !!
Ooooo -- a closet Canuck????

Actually, we don't "shun" ketchup -- we just don't put it on EVERYTHING! LOL!

But admittedly, BossHog is pretty fanatical about about his Malt Vinegar on Fries (actually, I believe it to be a British import!).
Also, I hear we get our cold fronts from Alaska!

Who me?

I just happen to KNOW that french fries were meant to have malt Vinegar on them... and salt... and that's it.
I'm not fanatical... I just have trouble understanding how some people don't know this worldly truth.
Ask TC or hailskins if they've had fries WITHOUT malt vinegar since I turned them on to it. it's not like I'm wrong about this... you dump the fries out of the basket on to the paper towel... you salt them while they're still greasy... you leave the fries in the PT for 2-3 minutes... damp off the grease... apply a generous helping off vinegar, and then RE-SALT... man i hate it when people salt them before they vinegar them... you just wash all the salt away... and if you salt them after... the salt just sticks to the vinegar... it's so simple and yet so refined...
... ok I'm a little fanatical...
... and some drool just rolled down my chin. Is 8:30am too early for some fries?

I don't know.... It seems like alot of work for fries.... us Americans are fat & lazy.... easier just to squeeze some ketchup on them and get to the eating part

I was in Europe a few years ago, and though I generally avoided fastfood places, by the time I got to Paris, it was all I could afford. The two main things I recall about the McDonald's in Paris was that they served beer and that they had packets of "fried potato sauce" (pommes fritas? I think they call them, though maybe I'm getting my languages mixed up) which as far as I recall, consisted almost entirely out of mayonaise.
But, it's not like putting malt vinegar on fries is a purely non-American thing to do. For instance, the best burger joint in the DC area only has two condiments available for their patrons' fries: ketchup and (Heinz brand) malt vinegar. And for you anti-ketchup folks out there, there are really just three main ingredients in ketchup: vinegar, tomato, and salt.

3. soak the fries in the vinigar for 10 minutes
4. add some salt
5. hang each individual fry up to marinate
6. when theyre done marinating, u must cure them over a small flame

I thoght this thread was about pizza? Anyway I like my own homemade pizza just so I can control the amount of toppings, but if I get one out there is a place called Stavaro's in Emmitsburg MD that is pretty good.
Now about ketchup on pizza never heard of it but I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I like to put hotsauce on my pizza, Krystal's sauce from Louisiana is my favorite.
As far as fries and vinigar I think it tastes great. I learned about that many years ago in Ocean City MD at Thrasher's fries on the boardwalk. Man my arteries are closing just thinking about those salty, grease soaked , vinigar dripping delites.
After all this I will now make a pizza with vinigar fries and hotsauce on top mmmmmm.

don't knock it till you've tried it. its something that grows on you. the first time i did, i was like that was ok. but then i started to get this "cravin" for em. now i can't stop eatin em with vinegar. and make sure if you try it, you use MALT vinegar, and not anything else. that other stuff is for dressings, ribs and such.

I couldn't have said it better. There's a Brit that works at the tree farm with me. He was bitterly disappointed that American fries (ie McDonald's) were simply unsuited for the vinegar.
I turned him on to tater tots, and he's getting me some pickled green tomatoes from somewhere to show his gratitude.
SkinsLavar, if you tried it, you'd love it. It's not really the vinegar you're thinking about.
That's for cleaning the coffee pot.

So much to comment on.
The wife's family's Canuckian and they eat ketchup on their mac and cheese and on their bacon and eggs, so I don't want to hear about strange tastes of Americans.
Someone commented about peanut butter on a burger, try it, it's great.
The best pizza is Wolgang Puck's with feta and carmelized onions. The best traditional is Hi-Way Pizza in State College PA (I'm always lit after tailgating when I go there so it may really be crappy but you know) John's Wildwood is a close second.
The best fries are at the "O" in Pittsburgh.

What is "Canadian" bacon to you? As a Canadian (or "Canuckian"

Thanks!
They mean back bacon eh. That's Canadian bacon eh. The stuff with the cornmeal eh.
... and I don't know what this gibberish about America sauce on bacon & eggs... that may be what your friends do but that certainly isn't a Canadian thing. I HAVE seen people put America Sauce on their eggs... but I've seen Americans do it too.

This is the honest truth! Ther'es a place in L.A. called "Hamptons". It used to be on Sunset and Highland, but now it's in the valley somewhere. Anyway, they have 33 different types of hampurgers, ranging from broccoli burgers to cranberry burgers. Each "gourmet" burger has a unique name to it. i.e. the cranberry turkery burger is called "The Red Eyed Gobbler on the Run".
Anywho, they have a burger that is called "The Foggy-Bottom" burger. What's on a "Foggy-Bottom" burger? Peanut Butter and Sour Plum Jam on a hamburger patty, with onions, pickles, and a whole weat bun. I tried it as a dare, and it is the best damn hamburger I ever tasted in my life.
