Ramsey v Schoeder

I was reading my Redskin Gameday Program from the Giants game (Casey Husband's article) and I got to thinkin'.

I get the feeling that Gibbs looks at Patrick and he can't help but to compare him with Jay. I think Gibbs was never sold on Schroeder even when he threw for over 4,000 yds. and led us to the swamp for that NFC Title Game (the wind bowl). We later traded him for All Star Lachey.

They are both big strong armed QB's that needed to learn how to put some touch on the ball, make quicker decisions and not to stand in the pocket so long.

Ramsey is smarter though and is farther ahead of the learning curve. Ramsey can also throw the 10 yard out pattern. I can't count how many times Schroeder would have Clark open on a ten yd out pattern and rocket a pass right to his feet. This would frustrate Gibbs to death .... and me.

Ramsey is much better than Schroeder if we just give him some time .. litterally and figuratively.

Then again, there aren't many on our roster that I wouldn't trade for another Lachey.

I think he compares more with rypien. Not much mobility, but a stand in the pocket deep baller. Rypien needed time to develop too.

If I recall correctly, Schroeder was also a bit of jackass. I distiinctly remember Doug Williams saying how he got hurt in the Super Bowl but refused to come out of the game specifically because he didn't want Schroeder to step foot on the field...

I think njskinsfan has caught exactly what Gibbs saw in the films, and what made him cautious about Ramsey. In that 4,000 yard season, Schroeder also threw 20 TDs and 20 INT's. Then think about Ramsey's game against the Giants.

I thought, knowing nothing much else, that Gibbs lost confidence in Schroeder when reporters asked Schroeder before the wind-bowl "how are you going to handle the wind today", and Schroeder said "It's no problem...I just keep the nose of the ball down...the wind won't have an effect". Phil Simms, when asked the same question, said something like "It's tricky, it's a tough situation to throw in, so I'll be careful."

I don't know if Schroader ever recovered his confidence after that game.

Yes...those rockets at Gary Clark's feet...ugh.

One additional reason Beathard and Gibbs felt comfortable trading for Jim Lachey, who might have been the best left tackele ever in Washington, was that they had Rypien on fake IR. You can see Rypien in SB 17 standing next to Gibbs, waering a white Redskins turtleneck and holding the clipboard. Williams + Schroeder + Rypien was a traffic jam. Beathard also draft Stan Humphries in that draft, so imagine trying to carry all four of them.

Of course, Williams came down with appendicitis at the beginning of the next season, so they had to start Rypien...call it a takeoff from a very short runway.

Personally, which counts for nothing, I think that Ramsey is more coachable than Schroeder, and that Ramsey will make it. He certainly talks as if he has begun to learn what Gibbs, Breaux, and Bugel want from a QB. He can throw short as well as long.

PRam has more smarts than Schroeder, but less mobil. PRam really understands what the coaches want him to do as well. He's very humble and does'nt want to "buck" the system.
