an Interesting read..

Post by verm04 »

Today my mother was at the book store and she picked up "Winning the NFL way" by bob lamonte. Mr lamont is an agent for 6 NFL coaches. Among those coaches are the likes of Mike Holmgren, John Gruden, and Andy Reid. I have been reading through it all day and I have found some incredible similarites in Mr Reid and Coach Gibbs I thought i would share with you. Quoting from the book...

"When Andy first got here, he assembled a coaching staff- a group of individuals who believed in his vision. Then he recruited the kind of players he believed could fulfill his mission. Sure he wanted plays with great athleticism, but he mainly sought out character guys. This is a tough business. He wanted the kind of guys that he knew would buy into his vision and, in the hard times, they would do it his way. He didn't want to be seduced by somebody's sheer athleticism who had bad character.'

"Brad Childress, The Eagles offensive coordinator, concurs with [the conditioning coach] on Reid's strong emphgasis regarding character. ' Andy is not seduced by a player's athleticism if he's a bad chacater person. In today's NFL, it takes strtong discipline to think this way"

Another passage speaks of Reid's first season as Eagles coach in 1999. Early in the season Reid had Mcnabb benched for Vet. Doug Peterson because he felt Donovan was not yet ready to take control of the offense. The crowd boo'ed him heavely, however Reid's strong conviction and will refused to let him succumb to the pressures of the fans and media. Reid had a plan. I think we can all agree at this point his plan is working.

I'de list more but im only about 1/4th through the book. Its a great read. Those are some obvious similarities with Mr. Gibbs. I will post anything else I see if I find it similar to The Redskins' coach.

Very interesting. The thing with me is that I don't want to wait because I want a Super Bowl before I graduate (June) but I know I'm not going to get it but hopefully over time it will occur and we will win regularly just like Philly.

Thanks for posting.

yea, Terrell Owens defines character, that's for sure....I just looked character up in the dictionary and low and behold it said see Terrell Owens....

I buy into Reid, but if he's all character driven then he wouldn't have touched that loser with a 10 foot pole. We're all eating crow though, as week in and week out Terrell snags TD's....too bad...sooooo sad...

If there was one thing I wanted this season, it was to see Terrell fail and bring mutiny to the Eagles...

Seasons not over...

It's just a little bit unfair that Andy Reed got all those players. Owens, Jevon kearse, Brian Westbrook, Mcnaab

man, its crazy. they have a team full of charactar. No wonder why they're unstopable.

However we have the best coach in the NFL, so what can be better than that, eh?

I'd say I'm going to miss him in this league, but my memories of him are to fresh verse the 'Skins.
