Our DB's are getting worked so far

Especially Shawn Springs. He really is getting worked so far in this first half. Then I just look at Samuels go down. This is sucking tonight.

Last year I thought it was the scheme, with Smoot playing so far off of guys. Now I know its just him. Is he not that fast? Anyone know his 40 time? Its like he plays prevent every down.

Gregg William's corners have always played tight on their assignments (bump and run basically) but tonight the Rams Receivers are coming off the line unchallenged for some reason. I know offense has been Vanila but did the D change flavirs or are we that bad againt speed receivers?

I agree with DEHog. Springs didn't look bad at all. In fact, I was very impressed that he took that big hit and was able to get up.

Smoot, on the other hand, looked like a rookie out there tonight. I'm not sure what was going on but he was playing way to far off the receiver(s).

This game will surely be a learning experience for the entire secondary.

I still think the problem is Smoot/Springs aren't #1 CB...in GW D he is asking the CB's to do alot....he better make sure he gets to the QB when he brings the house. One of the reasons I liked Champ so much was he's a CB who has great speed and can cover well enough to let you do some of the tnings GW wants to do...we just never used him that way.

I disagree - most of what happened was lack of responsibility on another person's part (Lott usually) when Holt would make a cut into a zone that they were responsible for - look at it again on the tapes - when Smoot is responsible for the right deep zone and Holt is cutting towards the middle of the field and 7-10 yards inside of Smoot when he catches the ball - then lo and behold - there is the safety responsible for the zone coming into the picture - it wasn't Smoot or Springs. They were playing the scheme as it was meant to be played - the underneath and interior coverages were breaking down. Smoot ended up having to clean up.

Oh - one other point - Jimoh got burnt for a TD, Brown for a TD, and one TD was a run. So it wasn't all Smoot, nor was it mostly against the first stringers.

i heard on a post-game show just now that gregg williams kind of intentionally made things hard on some guys just to see how well they could handle it. one certainly does wish smoot would have handled it a bit better, but keep in mind that when GW "brings the house", they should be getting to the QB much more quickly once lavar and griffin and daniels or whoever are all back in the picture.

So when GW brings 6 or 7 guys the other 4 or 5 are playing zone?? I guess I missed that...I thought one of the ways your're able to blitz is by having guys who can cover man to man??

in the beginning - man to man was played when they blitzed often - afterwards he was playing zone and mostly sending one or two guys extra - you can still play zone - though poorly - when you have 5-6 guys in the secondary...

I heard that about Williams wanting to see if the secondary could handle it, that he wanted to give Taylor a taste of humility, etc.

I don't know how true that is - but if he was aiming for it - he got it

The Rams offense is based on the decision tree for the receiver - the QB knows the direction the WR is going in general, but the WR will have 3-5 choices to make depending on the "windows" of opportunity. When Holt would see Smoot drop straight back into zone he would cut inside on a slant or in, and occasionally out into a slant out... that is when the majority of his 7 catches were made and also where the majority of his yards were made... I will look at it again after I get home from the Tech game and break it down more thouroughly, but I am fairly certain on this... I was watching for it on the replays when I saw Smoot getting "burnt" - it ended up that several times Smoot made the tackle for someone else.

If I am wrong I'll letcha know - for real...

I hope you are right SKR because it seemed that he was getting burned stride for stride on some plays. This was an ego game for the Rams though.

Smoot was just plain getting beat sometimes. He did that same crap last year. He plays really far off of his man. I'm going to research his 40 time, maybe the boy is slow, lol.

He got that from D. Green, however, D green was one of the fastest men the league at one point.

I wasnt impressed with either of our starting corners last night. I agree that Smoot had his fair share of getting burnt but Shawn Springs got worked in the beginning of the game. And Sean Taylor was lucky on a couple of different routes that Bulger was off target because he was totally turned around. Lets hope this is a wake up call and also our DL looked awful. It didnt matter how many people we sent their OL (which is weak at beast) was picking up the blitz. Its amazing because KC had no problem Monday night getting to Bulger and they dont have a talented defense (even with Gunther Cunningham). I know we didnt have many starters in last night on defense but when you send that many people someone should be able to get free. It was a very disappointing game.
