Training Camp Tracker

Today's Schedule | Brunell vs. Ramsey | Quotable
Fresh Faces | Daily Gibbs Watch | Odds and Ends | Injuries | If You Go

Today's Schedule
No practice.

Brunell vs. Ramsey
It was already determined that Mark Brunell, in his 12th season, would start Monday night's preseason opener, with third-year quarterback Patrick Ramsey set to start Saturday against Carolina at FedEx Field. There is no indication how long Brunell will stay in Monday's game. Coach Joe Gibbs said he and his staff are mulling over that and would like to let game details help make the decision. Furthermore, Gibbs does not believe in letting his players know exactly how long they will be playing.

Yesterday's afternoon practice was the final opportunity for Brunell to work with the first-team offense before the preseason opener, but neither he nor Ramsey threw many balls. The other two quarterbacks on the roster -- Tim Hasselbeck and Gibran Hamdan -- received the most work. Ramsey showed good composure by finding his third and fourth option for some nice completions, but was also intercepted by rookie safety Sean Taylor.

Quotable
"We want Dallas! We want Dallas!"
-- A horde of fans to Joe Gibbs as he addressed the public before practice.

Fresh Faces: Dameane Douglas
Position: Wide receiver.
College: California.
Who He Is: Douglas, 28, was brought to camp late. He spent parts of the past five years in the NFL, four with the Philadelphia Eagles, but missed last season after getting hurt in training camp. "I was sitting home, playing with my kid before I got the call from Washington," he said. "I was enjoying life but still felt empty without playing football."
How He's Doing: If things don't work out on the field, Douglas can fall back on his degree in social welfare. He finished his final two online classes Tuesday night. "Coach [Joe] Gibbs let me hang out a little past curfew and I got my finals in and was able to talk to my professors a bit," Douglas said. "One of the classes was History before 1877, and all of the places we talked about I'm now able to see [around Washington] with my own eyes."
Chances of Making the Roster: There are many talented wide receivers on the depth chart, but Douglas could find a niche on special teams, where he has excelled.

The Daily Gibbs Watch
The fans have saluted Joe Gibbs at Redskins Park at the start of almost every practice session, often giving him a rousing ovation as he walked to the practice field, but yesterday's reaction was by far the most emotional. Gibbs addressed the massive crowd at 3 p.m. as part of the festivities at fan appreciation day and spoke briefly. "We know we've got the best fans in the world," he said.

Gibbs has thanked the fans for turning up in droves throughout training camp and apologized on a daily basis for not being able to sign more autographs and mingle longer because of the frenetic pace of camp and time constraints after practice. Fans will have one more chance to watch Gibbs in action before the regular season; Wednesday's practice is open to the public. However, the rest of training camp will be closed to the fans and media as Gibbs installs key elements of the playbook under an air of secrecy. Gibbs immediately began signing autographs after practice and continued to do so into the evening.

Odds and Ends
The Redskins worked out for about two hours, spending significant time on special teams. The coaches then ran 24 scripted plays, simulating the looks of Denver, tomorrow's opponent, on offense and defense. The backups got a bulk of the work and are likely to get significant playing time tomorrow night in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.

The players were given last night off, a rarity during training camp. They will continue to stay at the nearby National Conference Center next week. The team was set to depart for Ohio this afternoon and will have Tuesday off before resuming with practices at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

When was Walt Harris pronounced "out indefinitely"? Had not heard that before!!
I figure... If life is all about the choices you make... Then I choose Redskin football, beer and hot wings!!
