Brunell vs. Ramsey
Neither quarterback saw much action in the morning session. The Redskins concentrated on running plays and the other two quarterbacks on the roster, Tim Hasselbeck and Gibran Hamdan, took most of the snaps. Mark Brunell completed one pretty pass to James Thrash -- the receiver did much to help his own cause by holding off his defender and making a one-handed grab -- while Patrick Ramsey rifled a pass to Fred Baxter that went for a long touchdown and displayed good accuracy finding Scott Cloman in traffic. Brunell said he believes he is finding a better rhythm and that the offense is coming along, but his timing on deep passes in particular has been rusty.
Quotable
"That's really scary when LaVar [Arrington] and Mike [Barrow] both go down. But we're really deep and we know we have some guys who can step in."
-- Marcus Washington on his fellow linebackers missing practice because of injuries.
Fresh Faces: Dwayne Morgan
Position: Offensive lineman.
College: Clemson.
Who He Is: Morgan, a veteran of five seasons in the Canadian Football League, played five games for Atlanta last season before major knee surgery in December. He earned good reviews for his offseason workouts, but was not offered a contract by the Falcons and filled the Redskins' last roster opening this week.
How He's Doing: He has been thrown into drills after spending much of his first practice getting acclimated to the system and has spent extra time studying the playbook. Monday's preseason game could be a good opportunity. "I just got here, so I need to make sure I learn this offense and get after people," Morgan said.
Chances of Making the Roster: Assistant head coach-offense Joe Bugel might find something he likes in the 300-pounder, but his odds of making the team likely are slim given his late arrival.
The Daily Gibbs Watch
Coach Joe Gibbs excused himself from his morning news briefing for about five minutes when he noticed a group of mentally and physically challenged fans leaving Redskins Park. Gibbs leaped from the podium, ran over and began signing autographs and posing for pictures. He thanked the fans profusely for coming, and one fan in turn thanked Gibbs for coming back to coach the Redskins. "My dad would be tickled to death to see this," a fan said as Gibbs posed for a photo with him. "I wish he could." After the group left, Gibbs returned to the podium and answered every question asked of him.
Odds and Ends
Today will be the best opportunity for fans to interact with players, with the Redskins holding fan appreciation day. Team officials are bracing for an onslaught of fans and have various events planned for the public at Redskins Park. The parking lots and gates open at 8 a.m., and the special teams will hold a walk-through at 10 a.m. At 11:30, the offense and defense will hold walk-throughs, and the team's cheerleaders will hold an autograph session at noon. The band will give its first performance at 2 p.m., the cheerleaders will perform after that and Coach Joe Gibbs will address the fans at 3. The team will practice from 3:30 to 5:30 and players will sign autographs from the end of practice until 6:15. The gates at Redskins Park will close at 7:30. The team departs Sunday for Canton, Ohio, where it will face the Denver Broncos on Monday night. Wednesday's sessions will be the only other practices open to the public.
Running back Clinton Portis was dazzling again after taking Thursday off to rest a sore groin. The crowd saluted him after several nifty runs -- most impressive with his elusive cutback ability -- and speedy back Chad Morton continued to impress as well; Gibbs said he likely will use the gifted kickoff returner more in the offense.
