Portis article...

Clinton Portis is a colourful addition for the Washington Redskins

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Clinton Portis is a colourful character. Literally.

He drives a lemon-yellow 1974 Caprice Classic. His flashy wardrobe runs the gamut from pink to green and everything in between. He can't seem to go five minutes without cracking a joke - and some of them are actually funny.

"I'm not going to be like everyone else," the Washington Redskins running back said. "I'm having a sense of humour, not caring what people think. I'm going to wear whatever I feel comfortable wearing. If I want to put on yellow that day, if I want to put on pink, if I want to put on lime green, I'm going to put it on and not feel bothered by it."

Portis came to the Redskins in one of the biggest NFL trades in recent years - a swap of Pro Bowlers that sent Champ Bailey to Denver - and he's wasted little time making his presence known. His sharp, crisp runs have been one of the highlights of the early days of training camp, and his dry witticisms are becoming a favourite daily ritual.

The highlights:

- Portis made a fake announcement that he was following Miami running back Ricky Williams into retirement, giving reasons that parodied Williams' bizarre departure. "My dog's real sick. I need to spend more time with my dog," Portis said.

- Asked to comment on the competition between nice-guy quarterbacks Mark Brunell and Patrick Ramsey, Portis kept a serious face and said: "They're actually jerks."

- Discussing San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson, Portis had bad news for Redskins receivers Laveranues Coles and Rod Gardner: "LaDainian had 100 catches last year. I talked to coach. I'm probably going to get 101, just to better LaDainian. I told Laveranues, he might not make it to the Pro Bowl. Rod Gardner, they can hang it up. I'm going to do everything around here."

"I'm 22 and the leader of a professional football team that probably has the biggest fan base in the world," Portis said.

Good attitude! =D>

Yeah, but he doesn't really think he is the team's leader, does he? I think this is one more of his jokes.

I think it was one of his jokes and being sarcastic a bit however, his work ethic, his play on and off the field and him producing over 1500 yards and more than 10 TD's while being an excellent role model to the younger players will put him in the leadership role.

I'd say that he's being serious. Look agt the entire sentence, he included us having the biggest fanbase. Im probally looking too deep into it, but I think that he's being serious. Maybe he's not saying he's the main leader, the head honcho, but one of a few.

I agree and deservedly so he should be in that "few" status. Even if its his first year here, he has the tools and talents already, and there is nothing wrong with wanting to be a voice in the locker room, on the field, etc. His success speaks volumes and he is the sarcastic type that will have a lot of fun while he is here, but I really think there was a lot of thought put behind his leadership comment. And I welcome that.
I have travelled the net and found the Redskins promise land. This is, by far, the best site out there for Redskins/NFL News, Notes, Opinions, and so much more.

It's funny how football fans loyalty works. The more I see and hear about and from Portis, the more I like this trade we made. I read that interview with Champ where he talked about how he wouldn't have accepted a trade for a Portis type back unless it was a team like the Broncos, and I really found myself starting to despise him.

Portis has a new home and laughs and jokes about his old friends on the broncos. He was underpaid and wanted a standard contract for his skills. Champ takes half pot shots, and basically dogs the Redskins organization while talking smack about the crappy 14 mil bonus and 55 mil total contract he was offered.

Portis is much better for the lockeroom AND the field IMO, and I am so very happy this trade was pulled. I thought at the time, that offering up the 2nd rounder was too much, but I have since changed my mind. Great Trade.

I don't think he's joking about that at all. He is very confident in himself and his abilities and he realizes that he is the guy everyone is going to be watching. He's the guy who was brought in here to be the central figure. in Joe Gibbs' offense. He's the guy in all the commercials and on the cover of all the magazines. He's the highest paid RB in history, he has to perform and he believes he will. He has to lead by example. The confidence and work ethic that he has makes him a leader. What's more, he is clearly very vocal. He is not going to come in here and allow this team to lose. He may be a joker but IMHO he has real character.

If we are going to win he is going to have to lead this team. Certainly, guys like Brunell or Ramsey will have to take on leadership roles but he is the focal point of the team. If he doesn't take on this role, we're in trouble, and he realizes that. I think that he's dead serious :!:
