All Old-Time Yankee Fans...

Post by tcwest10 »

...'cause, everybody knows, you are all NYY fans. :)
I am currently locking horns with a guy at work over some trivial baseball history. We were talking about Reggie Jackson, who this guy is totally hung up on. Myself, I'm an old Munson guy. "Munson guys" don't like "Reggie guys", due to comments made by Mr. October when he came to the Yankees. He made it sound like the team saved itself by signing him, and specifically noted Munson as a non-factor.
Anyway, he got on me about Thurman Munson getting into a fight with 3rd baseman Graig Nettles as a litmus test for Munson's ability to "play well with others". Now, I know all about the Fisk/Munson wars and so forth, but I never heard anything about Munson and Nettles having a go-round of any type. Indeed, I'm pretty sure it was Nettles who generally got there first when Munson got himself into it.
While I realize that you guys are probably all Oriole fans, I had to put this out there, just incase one of you old-timers know the answer.
Did Munson and Nettles ever, to your knowledge, have a fight ?

Start a thread if you want, Jake. I'll play. What do you want to say ? I don't want to get too far off topic here because this is important to me, so if this is something you want to go back and forth about, do what you have to do and I'll see you there. Sound good ?

Munson was phenomenal. A great bowler. They even made a movie after him, I believe it was "Kingpin". Funny stuff. But, I guess he was a pitcher before being a bowler??

First, I am a Washington Senator fan, forever. No Yankees, although my daughter is devoted to them. And the Orioles? That's a different town.

(Everyone knows that the baseball season starts when the President throws out the first pitch in Washington. That hasn't happened since 1971, so I say that all baseball seasons since then should be marked with an '*'. )

Second, Nettles fought Reggie, because he was angry with Reggie's "I'm the straw" comment. I think Reggie's swing was more fun to watch, but Munson was a better hitter. Whenever the Yankees really needed a hit, Munson bashed a double to right-center.

Oh, well, long ago, but 1978 was fun.

That was my argument. I remember well the whole, "I'm the straw that stirs the drink. He (Munson) stirs it too, but he can only stir it bad". From that day forward, in my mind, "Mr. October" had nothing on "Mr.Rest-of-the-Season".
Still, this guy has a vivid memory, and I found myself wondering about it. The whole Bill Lee thing, where that scrap ended with Stick dislocating the pitching arm of Lee at the shoulder...
Never saw or read of Nettles and Munson getting into it for anything.

Jealous???? Why do you hate them, because they pay for there players????? Sounds like what the Redskins do. Dan Snyder gets compare to George Steinbrenner every day for the way he runs things.....Anyone who "hates" the Yankees should "hate" the Redskins. But I guess when a team (the Yankees) guarantees your team doesn't make the post-season every year.....yea, you must hate them. Kinda like my feeling towards the Cowboy's

Sorry TCWEST10, I don't know the answer to your question, I'm to young.

Check this out though:
Image
On Oct. 9, 1977, New York Yankees third baseman Graig Nettles fielded a throw from the outfield to tag George Brett out after an RBI triple. Brett slid into third and crashed directly into Nettles. Moments later the two were throwing punches and both teams leaped out of their dugouts and stormed the field. During the mayhem, Ron Guidry caught Brett by the neck and just as he was about to throw the punch someone tapped him on the back. Teammate Thurman Munson said, "Ron, don't hit him. I want to hit him."

Hey Ant I posted one reason why I hate them in another topic, since you obviously didn't read it I'll re-post it here. It was about the game on Sunday Night when Jeter got beaned in the back by the catcher and interference was called.

That it was enjoyable to watch!!! Did you hear him after the game? He was crying about it.

Thats one thing I hate about the Yankees whenever they don't win they cry.

There is NO comparison between what the Yankees do and what the Yankees do. There is a salary cap in football, and as much as the Redskins can manipulate that, it is nothing compared to what the Yankees are capable of doing...

There IS a comparison, the Yankees & Redskins are the best francises of there sport. That's not my opinion, it's a fact. BOTH teams go after the best talent available, the Yankees always get them, the Redskins usually do, but the cap stops them sometimes.

if there were no cap in football, do you think that the skins would have failed to sign kearse? and t.o.? and any other high priced talent? no way. if there were no cap, the nfc probowl team would be all skins and cowboys, the way that snyder and jones spend.

if john henry spends his money like geroge does, he'd have signed arod without blinking. and anyone else he wanted (that the yankees didn't sign, of course).

i think ss3 hit the nail on the head. you can't compare the skins to the yankees. the cap makes them apples and oranges.

First of all, the "best" franchise is a matter of subjectivity. I will allow you that the Yankees and Redskins are the two most valuable franchises in their respective sports.

And yes, the Yankees and Redskins usually spend the most money. But the Yankees spend so much more than the Red Sox (#2 in the league), it is ridiculous.

Now let me be clear. I fault neither the Yankees nor Steinbrenner for doing this. I have absolutley no problem with an owner who spends a ridiculous amount of money, and I am lucky to have a football owner who is willing to do the same thing.

But there is no comparison. The Redskins are talented for sure, but they don't have the ability to put together teams like the Yankees can...

Snyder does exactly (in a football way) what Steinbenner does. The ONLY differences are Snyder has a limit & may not be able to keep the team together forever the way ANY baseball team can cause there's no cap.

Right. And because of that single gigantic difference, there is no comparison between the Yankees and Redskins...

Spending money, is spending money. What are we up to in payroll with the Skins $120 million, the Yank are lik $175 million (well after we get Randy Johnson we'll be pushing $200 mil.), no, no comparison!

But its all relative. The NFL salary cap is a little over $80 million. Sure, the Redskins are able to manipulate that (to $110 million), but the Redskins do not spend $45 million more than the next closest team, like the Yankees do (the Mets are actually second).

I shouldn't say there is no comparison, because there is. But there is a big difference. I will say this, it's a shame Snyder isn't going to own the new D.C. baseball team, because he could give Steinbrenner a run for his money...

That sounds better, lol. Danny would give George "a run for his money", but it would take years.
