The Cincinnati Post reports that Daryl Gardener has not yet worked out a deal with the Bengals. It was rumored that he would sign with the Bengals after being released by the Broncos earlier this month. ... The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that right defensive tackle Tony Williams is not happy with the Bengals' pursuit of Gardener. Williams, who started all 16 games last season, has one year remaining on his current deal. The 28-year-old is slated to earn around $2.2 million in 2004.

Ok, Daryl Gardener should not even be an option. We had him and he was good but the dude has issues. I doubt that even Gibbs & Co. can control him. Why would Gibbs want to make a risque move like that?
Remember in 2002, when he was driven to the Texans facility in a luxurious Lincoln Town Car but didn't sign with Houston because he wanted a limo? What a freak.
And why sign a guy (Tony Williams) who is scheduled $2.2 mil this year for average play?

He is all talk.
I am with you Jake. Remember this guy told all of us that he WILL be a redskin next season and then screwed us, ran to Denver for a slightly higher signing bonus just to get bounced the next year.
I say let him wallow in Cincy (a real fun town to play in) and drift off into oblivion.
I doubt that Gibbs would want the guy and "the Daniel" has a very good memory.

Over! Nothing is over until we say its over. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor! Hell no! -- Future Sen. Blutarski.
If Gibbs could control Dexter - he can control anybody. I don't think he has huge issues - greed, a bit of cry-baby... but the man was a dominant player for the Skins and deserved to be in the Pro Bowl. His mouth gets carried away from him sometimes - but if Snyder can find the cash, back injury clause and get him on board... he'll be fine.
In addition, I'm not a big Shannahan-fan. He thinks he's Bill Walsh, and Bill Walsh thinks he's God. The Bronco's overpaid for Gardener and got burned. A year off and a great coach could bring great things... remember #44? - I'd say there were some issues there too. But Riggo was loyal to Gibbs, just as any player would be - how can you not be loyal to Coach Gibbs?

I disagree, we let Gardner go at just the right time. Yes, he had a particularly good season with us, but what has he done since? Now, back problems and all (we were lucky to have him as healthy as he was that year), he simply wouldn't produce for us. The only thing surer than that is that he won't play for cheap. We can't afford the guy, and you just know he won't play for cheap. Let alone get in more than 5 or 6 games for us.

I agree.... he's had one good season with us and left for more money.... and has done nothing since.... chances are.... he's not gonna return to form and I think we have enough to get the job done without him tying up our $

Honestly, their is no disputing the fact that the D-Line is the biggest qustion mark on this team (once again). I would risk a contract w/ Gardener because the way Snyders structures it we could be "safe" if we had to cut him in a year or two.
Would you rather have Gardener who "might" be injured, or Noble who DID have a career threatening knee injury. Who know if Noble will even make it through training camp.
I really wish we went after Ted Washington or traded for a DTackle....oh well.

It's hard to fix everything in a year.... We solidfied our Secondary, and Linebackers, Upgraded at RB, Created Depth at WR, QB, and Offensive Line.... and actually upgraded our d-line, if you compare them to last year.... The fact is... we have a soft spot for Gardner because he did great for us the one year he was here with us....
But nobody else in the league was jumping at the chance to get him.... I think we have enough quality guys and a great Defensive coach to get the job done.... like you said we already have one injury risk, why get another added to the roster who's gonna cost us more? I think we'll all be surprised on how well our line plays this year.... Just because we have no "big-names" doesn't mean they can't get the job done

Thats what they said last year (Dalton/Chase/Hailey/Hosley) ....
If we go through the summer without picking up a "name" D-Lineman then it will all come down to the linebackers. Lavar will need to step up and stick to Williams schemes and the chemistry between Barrow/Washington/Arrington will need to be there come August.
...but wouldn't it be easier if we just got a "name" on the defensive line?
There is no substitute for dominant defensive line play. No blitz package makes up for bringing the business. DG brought the business and is capable of doing it again. Yes it's a risk. Yes we would be protected from his back problems with a clause in the contract. Think of the upside!

Dalton/Chase/Hosley were fill in's for Noble when he got hurt.... and they were picked by an inexperienced staff.... This is a Joe Gibbs Staff were talking about not Steve Spurrier.... Hailey did good while he was in there and then was injured... notice Greg Williams staff kept him over all the others

All that you have to do is go to Williams D line last year.... the only name they had was Ted Washington.... They rest where no-names that Greg had play to there full-potential.... he'll do the same here.... I bet my "Hogs.net" membership card on it

Actually, Ted Washington played for the Pats...Williams had Sam Adams at Buffalo.
But still, that is my point. There was ONE name on Williams D-Line last year. I would rather have ONE name on the D-Line instead of asking the linebackers to make up the difference. Imagine if Gardner and Griffen were the DTackles...then Washington and Arrington could do anything they wanted to.
I am sure Snyder and Cerrato are exploring the Gardener possibility and Gardener does not have much leverage since he is "labeled"...I think the Redskins are Gardeners "Plan B".
All we need is Gibbs' blessing on the deal.

Whatever the outcome... I'll be happy.... I'm sure if he came here and stayed health... he could improve or D - Line... but I just don't think we need him bad enough, to give him the money he's gonna demand

Yeah, Garderner could wait until August...if a D-lineman gets injured his value will go up...but if there is not a big injury on a team this summer then he will likely sign a cheap one year deal.
At this time his ego is out of control, a guy like Marvin Lewis, Dungy, or Parcells could fix that but Joe Gibbs prefers to not even deal with those types....hopefully the Skins will at least bring him in for an interview and Gibbs could have an impact on Gardeners attitude...you know, give the big bastard "The Talk".
The fact is he is the best D-tackle available and he is better than some starting tackles on other teams....and the Redskin D-Line is a question mark.
Darrell Russell was a
but a Darryl Gardener reunion would be a
IMO... It would just free the LB Corps up to be more dispruptive cause the other team would really have to game plan Gardner and Griffen...as well as Arrington/Barrow/Washington/Taylor ...wowzers!

I would love to see the Skins sign this dude to an incentive loaded 1-2 year contract.
If he can perform to the level he gave us 2 years ago our defense will be in the top three.
He makes everybody better. Noble is not the answer. Without a push up front Springs will be exposed. He is not Champ or even Fred Smoot in coverage. DG will collapse the pocket all by himself. Pair him with Cornelius Griffin and Griffin becomes a Pro Bowl tackle.
Give him a nice signing bonus and sign him NOW!

I don't understand how anyone who watched Gardner play in 2002 for us would not want to take a chance on him. The guy was an absolute monster and was arguably the team MVP.
Yes, he is a injury and attitude risk, but he was those same things in 2002. The gamble paid off, and I would be more than willing to try it again. After his debacle in Denver he's not going to command big money. I don't understand why anyone would rather go into the reason with Bernard Holsey...
