Training Camp v. Jury Duty

I, for one, was really looking forward to attending training camp. Now, I'm wondering if I'm even going to get the chance to go!

Yesterday I received a "Summons for Jury Service" in the Federal District Court for the District of Delaware. Unlike jury duty in lower state courts (where I work), they inform me that I will be "eligible" for jury duty during July and August, 2004.

I am also told that they will inform me approximately one week before I am scheduled to appear.

What this means? It means that if I schedule to take a week off to attend training camp in late July or early August, I may get ordered to report for jury duty; therefore, I'll be S.O.L..

Oh well. Considering my profession, I certainly understand and value the role of jurors in our justice system so, if called, I will proudly serve and play my part in the justice system. I doubt that I'd ever get picked....but I'd certainly report if directed.

I am throwing this out there now...so if I cannot go to training camp, you'l know why. :cry:

of course you could always pull out a ruler and state proudly that you could tell beyond a shadow of a doubt who was guilty and who wasn't by the amount of space between their eyes

we'd see you in camp the next day

Actually, looking at the paperwork they gave me, it looks like they're gonna pay me $40/day. Wow! That federal court is a big spender!

Just show up with a tin-foil hat on and tell them you can read brain waves and with the ESP vibes tell if someone is guilty or innocent. !!!!!!!!!!

I hope you make it in time to see Bowen lay the wood to Trung again...so we can send him packing to Seattle or Detroit. ](*,)

I didn't know judges had to serve jury duty. :hmm:

Are you telling me JH, with all your legal experience you can't get out of jury duty. :lol:

I know it's your duty to society and everything, but I am sure you can come up with something. :wink:

I always tell it would cause a hardship to take off work to serve Jury Duty (which is true)....anyway it gets me out of it.

Would not being in your position make you ineligible for jury duty seeing what your job is :hmm:

my girlfriend is in the same boat. she got a letter back in march, but was right in the middle of spring semester. they said they'd move the dates to sometime in june or july

hopefully its sooner rather than later. i'd be in deep doo doo and under the freaking dog house if i left for camp without her :hmm:

Seriously though I hope you show for training camp. What if you already paid for your hotel?? Would that sway them to keep you from being chosen for that particular week?

I am 23 and have already served on 2 Jury's. Do not even worry about it they pool so many people that you will probably not even get called. The cases usually work fast in lower courts, unless it is federal which I had.

We got 35 bucks a day and if you are a full time employee must companies will pay you

Nope, even prosecutors have to perform their civic duty to serve as jurors if/when called upon.

No. If I get called to sit on a civil trial, there will likely be no issues. If I get called up in a panel for a criminal trial, however, I'm sure the defense will take a "close look" at me and probably exclude me.

That would be a mistake because I, for one, take my role as a prosecutor very very seriously. One of the proudest characteristics of being a prosecutor is my job is to "do justice" 100% of the time, not necessarily to "obtain convictions". Because of that, I will always make sure I endeavor to see that justice is done. Because of that, believe it or not, I'd be a great juror....even in a criminal trial...because I would hold the State accountable for proving a person guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt" like I'm supposed to. Just because I'm a prosecutor doesn't mean I would rubber stamp "guilty" on the verdict form, ya know?

JH, you go do what you have to do. Even if you're sequestered, you'll likely be allowed to check in on us. We'll let you know what's going on.
As you alluded, it is your duty and great honor to participate in this process. It must take precedence over the NFL.
Pat Tillman made a similar commitment, with a much higher degree of consequence.
In a way, you honor him and us all by the choice you've already made. It's a sacrifice.
You're a good guy, Mr. Farren, and a good citizen.
By the way...let the bastard hang !
You should get some small reward for missing camp !!

If I understand you correctly, you're saying that it's noble for one to participate in jury duty; however, with all due respect, there is simply no way I can compare me participating in a little jury duty with the sacrifices our men and women of the armed forces are making. My sacrifice is less than minuscule compared to their heroic acts day in and day out.

...but a scarifice, nonetheless. It's unlikely that most of us could do what Tillman did. I agree with that. However, one of the things that he fought for was our right to our processes, and you have an opportunity to engage in one of them.
In your own way, you're giving up something you desire to do something you must.
That's honorable.
