Golston To IR: Ioannidis Called Up

Post by Burgundy&GoldForever »

The Redskins will place nose tackle Kedric Golston on season-ending injured reserve with a strained hamstring, Coach Jay Gruden announced Monday afternoon.

Golston, 33 and in his 11th season, suffered the injury on the first play of Sunday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

A sixth-round pick out of Georgia in 2006, Golston is the longest-tenured member of Washington’s roster. The 6-foot-4, 330-pound Golston is also among the Redskins’ locker room leaders, and younger teammates affectionately call him, “Uncle Ked.”

Golston was playing on a one-year, $1.005 million contract after re-signing with Washington this offseason. He had served primarily as a backup and special teams contributor the past several years, but this year took over as the starting nose tackle. Golston recorded two tackles in the season opener against Pittsburgh.

When Golston got hurt against Dallas on Sunday, Ziggy Hood took over as the nose tackle. Cullen Jenkins, a 13th-year veteran who signed with the team last week and played on Sunday, also will see time at that position in addition to defensive end.

To fill Golston’s spot on the roster, Washington has promoted fifth-round pick Matt Ioannidis from the practice squad. Ioannidis had some ups and downs in training camp and the preseason, but the Redskins believe the 6-3, 308-pounder could eventually develop into a quality contributor in the trenches as he continues to learn nose tackle after playing defensive end at Temple.

In an unrelated move, the Redskins released outside linebacker Lynden Trail from their practice squad, a person familiar with the situation said.

A season-ending strain? :hmm: I guess he's so old (in NFL years), that they don't think he can come back.

Yeah, I've never heard of that. At least, I've never heard of an IR decision being made so soon for something like a strain. :|
