Jets Game takeaways
I couldn't watch it but listened. I felt our defense was very strong, dominant really. I also felt the players knew their roles on both sides of the ball, they were better prepared than last week. I got the sense it was 'business as usual' and the Int didn't shake anybodys' confidence. They knew what they could do and how to do it. That is what Good Coaching does for you. Excellant.

They ran the ball better than they did against Atlanta.

Re: Jets Game takeaways
Speaking of which... I wonder how long Jones will be out- he was doing pretty well before he went down.
Do we look to the wire and add a vet? Bring Pierre back?
According to this: http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2016RB.php
Toby Gerhart or Chris Polk might be our only other options atm...
Idk WTF happened to AlMo, but he seems to be comfortable behind the enemies line, literally.. Fn traitor, must love the D!
Pist me off to see his signature homerun swing after scoring 6... in that uniform. uhg just made the fond memories turn to hate and disgust!

Re: Jets Game takeaways
I watched the first half. If you didn't see the game, honestly the score and stat line doesn't do justice at all to how dominant we were. I think the Jets had the ball for like 4-6 downs with like 12 minutes in the second half. Our offense was just rolling. Defense was shutting them down, making interceptions. McCoy threw a godawful pick in the endzone on their first drive.
Running game wasn't what I would call dominant, and I think they got stopped on a 4th and 1 run? But they didn't look bad either. Jones had some decent runs and so did Thompson.
Thought it was a fun game to watch overall.

I gather Long played Center as much or more than Lichtenstieger. Did Reiter play any in the 2nd half?

Re: Jets Game takeaways
I'm kind of irritated by all of the hand wringing this morning over the fact that Gruden sat out so many starters - including Cousins. Heard Sheehan on the radio this morning complaining about the "optics" of it. Who gives a crap about the "optics"? This is football not politics.
There were six or seven teams who didn't play their starting QBs in this second preseason game. I think coaches have rightly realized that there is very little to be gained by having your starting QB go out and throw three passes in an offense that you're not going to run during the regular season. Especially a QB whom the coaches know well. Its smart to weigh the risk of injury vs. the benefit of playing.
McCoy got some good work in the offense. Younger guys got some valuable playing time and tape. No major injuries other than Matt Jones. I'll take it.

I heard it this morning too and I was wondering wtf is the big deal

Clearly we need to see how our backups do against other teams' starters.

I could care less about who plays in pre-season games - finding out who best can help this franchise is far more important
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

In the Jets game I was really impressed with the defense.
I really like how our DBs are playing right now, I hope they can maintain that for the entire season.

Have we even seen Breeland, Norman, AND Hall on the field at the same time yet?!

They worked the tar out of Kendall Fuller... looks like he's good to go, physically... and he showed that he still have cover skills. Got beat a couple of times by perfect throws... but covers VERY nicely. Nothing flashy... but pretty good for a rook coming back from a bad injury. This leaves me VERY comfortable with our CB depth. This team is going to have a KILLER secondary... K I L L E R!!!

I only saw small snippets of the game, but the biggest takeaway that I got was complete confusion as to why Jets fans were clamoring for Fitzpatrick to resign.

I'll just say if you watched a little bit longer to see Geno Smith play, then you would have your answer.
Don't they have like eight QBs on that team too???

Re: Jets Game takeaways
I fail to see how anything meaningful can be taken away from that game. The Jets were no competition on either side of the ball. There was nothing in the way of being tested. A lot of starters didn't even play.
I'm sure the coaches were looking at individual players who are on the bubble but there are only a few of those. Most of the roster is already set.
The guys who have to show something in these otherwise meaningless games are players like Dunbar and Toler because they don;t have enough roster spots for all the defensive backs.

Well one meaningful thing you can take away is that we manhandled that team in the first half with a good number of our starters sitting out. Especially on the offense.
I think we're still short some legit play makers in a few key spots, but they're doing a good job developing depth.

I think when all is said and done there are, at the most, six players fighting for roster spots. The rest of it is a dog and pony show.
At this point, even the next game is only partially useful since the starting running back is out. Can't get the timing down with the starter if he's not playing.
I think it benefits whichever back is behind between Kelley and Marshall but unless Jones goes on the PUP list or IR (and don't rule those out just yet) only one of the two is likely to make the roster and if he is starting we're probably super mega mega screwed in the running game in any case. As you said in the other thread the waiver wire options at back aren't exactly a who's who of talent.
My guess is they're just trying to get out of the next two games without losing any more starters.

Bingo.
Which is why it's odd to me as to why people get so hung up on these preseason games. IMO, the first 2 should be played largely by the backups and 3rd stringers. The starters should get playing time in the 3rd and 4th games to get ready for the regular season.

I understand what you're saying. My point though is that Martrell Spaight got to start at inside linebacker against the Jets first team offense. He's not a guy who is fighting for a roster spot, and he's not a guy who is likely to be starting week one vs. the Steelers. You can say the same thing about McCoy, Jamison Crowder, Ryan Grant, etc;
It was a good playing opportunity for those guys.

I don't think so. RB is probably the easiest position to replace with a rookie of any, other than punter. Pass protection might be an issue, but still, I doubt we're screwed with either one.

You probably figured out from the other thread I'd like to see both Kelley and Marshall get real opportunities in season games. I know the front office is sold on Matt Jones but I'm not. Something about the way he runs the ball is off-putting. I can't quite explain it but it's like his vision isn't very good. By the time he sees the hole it's closing up.

I wish I could have seen Kelly. Doc Walker seemed impressed by what he saw, he described a back that hit the hole hard with square shoulders trying to run thru people. The kind of guy that would get yardage in the 4th quarter. I don't see that kind of back in Jones. now you get Jones on the outside with nothing but a corner to slow him and he'll scare the *sh$t* out of the other coach. Its the getting him there is the problem. He'd make a serious 3rd down specialist if we can find somebody to do the meatwork.

I've been a Kelley guy since they signed him but he only got three carries the last game. They need to give him more than that.

I guess Marshall is the guy they used a pick on, so they seem determined to give him the opportunity. But Kelly seems to be the guy that's getting a lot of praise from Gruden right now. I expect we'll see a heavy dose of both players in this next game.
