Redskins to interview Wade Phillips for DC

John Clayton reported that Jon Gruden would have wanted Smith as his general manager had he returned to coaching. Got a hunch that this means it would be OK with Jay Gruden as well. Not that they always have to be in lockstep, but if his brother endorses such a move, then it makes sense Jay Gruden would respect his opinion.

Don’t be surprised if Smith pushes hard for Wade Phillips as the defensive coordinator. Phillips was the San Diego Chargers’ defensive coordinator for three seasons when Smith was the general manager. Smith was a scout and then pro personnel director in Buffalo during Phillips' six seasons as defensive coordinator and then head coach. In San Diego, Phillips' defense ranked 11th, 13th and then seventh in points allowed per game. They were 18th, 13th and 10th in total yards. Doesn’t sound like there’s any doubt Phillips would want to return to coaching. Phillips' son, Wes, also serves as the Redskins’ tight ends coach.

Hopefully he's excited about the prospect of working on a team with his son. I would also enjoy seeing Phillips come to DC.

Im hoping adding Wade will help our offense too. A better defense gives our offense better field position, and more opportunities to score. Plus not falling behind early allows us to keep a balanced attack and to use more plays.

He has run an NFL defense in 23 seasons. Phillips also was a head coach for nine seasons. In both of those roles his defenses have been in the top 12 in the NFL in yards allowed 18 times and in the top 12 in points allowed 15 times.

This is a guy who has done the job well in multiple places, multiple teams, different situations. No guarantee of success here, but I think we need a guy with the best possible track record. His head coaching experience might be helpful for Gruden as well.

Thought we should have fired Haslett when they got rid of Shanny and hired Phillips. Wade has always gotten the best out of his players and had more success with less pretty much his whole defensive coordinator career.

The naysayers don't like him for no reason other than he looks like a dork and rather hire a younger guy with a scowl on his face....thats the ONLY reason. This guys is proven and has always wanted to coach.

He actually wanted to stay with the Texans after Kubiak was fired as D Coordinator but they decided to go a new route.

I'm with you 100% on everything you just wrote here.

The sad part of this is that he still faces an uphill battle to turn this defense around, especially if they fail to bring in the players he needs.

Lucky for us hes known for turning bad defenses into good ones in just 1 season. With some draft/ FA help he xan def do it

This cannot be stated enough. I think it's an even bigger reason to get him as opposed to his track record of having good defenses year in and year out.

Wade has been my NOT SO SECRET choice for DC for well over a year now (or basically since the day he was terminated by HOU).

I would think the job is his to turn down and the likelihood is he'd take it given the fact his son is our TEs coach.

That being said, this is not an easy job in the least. We have one of the worst DEFs in the NFL from a talent perspective. What is nice about a guy like Wade is that he is less interested in being successful as a way to land a HC job, so he is less likely to take talent and things of that nature into consideration.

If this ended up happening, this would be the 3rd overall coaching decision I have agreed with (other than Schott and Gibbs) since Danny boy has owned the team (so to a degree I'm pessimistic this will happen and we'll end up with Morris).
