Starters Tonight

Post by gregory smith »

I am looking forward to the game tonight. Will key backups be held out as well as starters? Who do you predict the 22 starters will be tonight?

I just wish Griffin would have taken a couple more snaps, but Gruden knows more than I do.

I know what you're saying, but pre-season snaps are dubious. I do think Griffin will start slow. I am not sure whatever Gruden does now will change that, he needs to develop under live fire.

agreed - there's not much doubt that Griffin needs time - some seem to think he's not going to get any better

I'm looking forward to watching him become the good NFL QB most of us expect him to be
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I read Cousins isn't even playing tonight, supposedly Colt is playing the entire game.

Heard the same thing about Cousins not playing tonight.

I know some people are speculating that might mean there is a trade for Kirk in the works. But personally I think holding Cousins out might mean they're not planning to keep McCoy on the 53. Keep RGIII AND his backup healthy going into week one.

The preseason is such a joke, but good grief, the fourth game is complete nonsense.

Btw first person who posts that Colt McCoy outplayed RGIII tonight should get booted from the site.

I say there should be two awards, one for who posts Colt should start first, and another for best reason why.

I'll get it out of the way: cut RGIII, start McCoy.

There. Now no one can say it.

And unless Shaun Hill looks like a complete and utter disaster in St. Louis, I don't see any sort of trade attempt that they would make at this moment. Depending on how well Griffin looks in the regular season, I'd say the possibility of a trade is there for Cousins...but not yet.

I finally figured out who the defensive player is that I been watching, he is number 46R (same # as Morris) his name is Compton a line backer - I thought he was a safety but he is listed as LB. I hope he gets some playing time tonight. That kid has good instincts.
I think the 1st string offense needs to play 1st quarter, if Allen or Gibbs were coaching the 1st string would be out there. The primadonnas haven't earned the right to 'observe' and they haven't proved they can win a football game.

I really wish I could pass this insight on to the staff - fortunately they have a different idea on the best way to evaluate players

I like how people throw this stuff out here just for the sake of being argumentative.

I'm sure the three or four guys still fighting for roster spots are hyped for the game tonight. That doesn't make the current preseason system the NFL has rigged up any less of a joke.

If they played only 3 pre-season games, everything would remain the same, it would just happen one game earlier. Game 2 would be the one where the starters play 3 quarters, and they would sit for game 3. The pre-season is a necessary evil. They need some time for the starters to prepare for the real thing, and evaluate players under real game situations. It is what it is. If they didn't have a pre-season at all, the game would suffer for it at the begining of the regular season.

Yeah? And this can't be done without charging season ticket holders full price for meaningless games where the star players don't play? Coaches couldn't have evaluated these players this week with a scrimmage against the Ravens or something?

Sorry I think you guys misunderstood what my beef with the preseason is.

Yeah, I agree that they shouldn't charge full price for the pre-season. But to your other point, no, a scrimmage is not the same as real game situations. And also, you totally avoided my other point about the starters getting to play in these games, so that when the season begins for real, the level of play doesn't suffer.

I'm not sure what you mean. A scrimmage is just a practice game. You can run a scrimmage EXACTLY the same way you run a preseason game. You can have real officials, keep real time, play your starters, etc; etc; Its as much a "real game situation" as a preseason game is.

Look up NFL preseason game, and I'm pretty sure the definition is "glorified scrimmage".

Deadskins wrote:And also, you totally avoided my other point about the starters getting to play in these games, so that when the season begins for real, the level of play doesn't suffer.

I don't have any issue with the starters or anybody else playing in the games. That's not the problem with the current preseason system. The problems are that its a financial ripoff for both the fans and players, its too long and it puts players at risk in meaningless games.

I actually enjoy the preseason games too, just because I'm happy to get to watch ANY football by the time August rolls around. I just think its stupid system driven more by NFL greed than by any semblance of not wanting the level of play to suffer.

No, it really isn't. There's no play clock, no crowd, coaches can call as many time outs as they want, etc. And even if you do have refs, it's probably not as many, and there's no replays. I get what you're saying, but a scrimmage is not going to be the same as a real game, no matter how much you want it to be.
