Cooley Joins 980 Broadcast team

Post by riggofan »

Good news. No big surprise!

From ESPN980's facebook page:

Washington DC (July 16, 2013) - RED ZEBRA BROADCASTING announces today that they have signed Former Washington Redskin Pro Bowler Chris Cooley to a multi year deal. Cooley will join the Washington Redskins Radio Network as an in-game contributor. "Cooley's Corner" will be heard quarterly, every game beginning with the pre-season opener in Tennessee on August 8th, 2013. Chris joins former Redskin Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen, Rick "Doc" Walker and Brian Mitchell as former Redskin players that are members of the Washington Redskins Radio Network.

Hall of Famer Sam Huff stepped down earlier this summer after 50 years with the organization. Of the hiring, Chuck Sapienza, Executive Producer for the Redskins Radio Network said "To add a talent and fan favorite like Chris to our team will add excitement to our broadcast and a level of unpredictability for our listeners." Cooley had 429 receptions for 4,711 yards and 33 touchdowns during his 9 year playing career. Red Zebra CEO Rick Carmean said of the addition "Chris has shown he has a true knowledge of the intricacies of the game and I look forward to having him share those with our listeners along the Redskins Radio Network."

In addition to his duties for The Redskins Radio Network, Chris Cooley will also be joining the Redskins Broadcast Network for commentary on various TV and Web-based shows including The Mike Shanahan Coaches show on NBC 4. The Redskins open the 2013-14 regular season Monday Night September 9th at Fed Ex Field verses division rival Philadelphia. The Washington Redskins Radio Network can be heard nationally on 34 stations, including their flagship, ESPN980 (WTEM-AM) in Washington DC.

Good stuff. Gotta love Cooley's loyalty to the team. I hope he becomes a long-term Redskins media icon. He was and always will be one of my favorite players.

Dan Hellie is how it's spelled but all good. I think they already may have someone but good lord if news broadcasts ever thought outside of the box, it could be HUGE for ex nfl players.

I REALLY appreciate it when players retire and stick around in the DMV.. that's a good look, plus he has a great personality and he vibes real nice with the Skins fans.

So does anty TE currently on the roster ever come close to Cooley's career numbers?
I would wager it is a safe say the answer willmost mostlikely likely be no and no one even come close.

I was being a bit facetious when I said that.
By the way it sounds like Hellie is taking Rich Eisen's spot at nfl network.

Called his first game last night and did a pretty good job at it

A week into his new gig and I gotta say I think he's up to the task, although his contract says he can leave anytime he wants to, with limited to no notice.

About a week ago "the Danny" gave a interview on Satellite radio and the Czabe and his grew were saying "the Danny" doesn't talk to the local media. Cooley did the show from Richmond on Tuesday and after practice he interviewed, five or six different people, the team owner offered to buy him a beer after the show.

No other media member in the world could have asked "the Danny" why a case of beer wasn't included in his last contract like he had asked.

The next day he flew on Redskin1 ( <----- ) to the Tenn game.

Good for Cooley. One of the few players who played well during the down years.
