End of an Era - The Hogettes have disbanded.

Post by Jake »

After 30 years of dedication and unabashed support, the super fan group The Hogettes are disbanding. The decision was made by Michael Torbert, known as Boss Hogette.

Widely recognized for their hog noses and dresses, The Hogettes were formed in support of the Redskins famous, dominant offensive line from the called The Hogs. From there, the group’s popularity grew immensely and became engrained in Redskins society.

They have used their notoriety to support numerous charities and were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s VISA Hall of Fans in 2004.

Dave Spigler, aka “Spiggy Hogette,” said over the phone that The Hogettes will still participate in charity events but will not do it under “The Hogettes” name, as it is trademarked.

A phone call to Torbert has not yet been returned.

More on this as the situation develops.

I guess it was bound to happen one day but I kinda always thought maybe younger generation would pick it up and carry it on.

The cause will endure, but it's time for a new era. I grew up in the 80's with the Hogs, so they will always be special. But, that isn't our identity. Time to forge our own.

I always respected their enthusiasm and dedication to both a very worthy cause and Redskin football, but the sense of humor that led to their appearance belongs to a very different era.

No reason why another group couldn't pick up the torch and adopt a different means of expression.

The Hogs have long since been gone. The Hogettes, IMO, were always a thing of the past since we haven't had an offensive line to celebrate/cheer since the Hogs.

True, although I think folks have considered other later individual lineman (ex. Samuels, Jansen, T. Williams v. 2012) to have been cut from the same cloth, so there was a sort of continuity there even if the entire line as a unit wasn't "Hog-worthy".

I understand wanting to forge a new identity for this team. Exciting times are ahead, particularly for the younger fans who dont remember this franchises dominance.

For me , its a sad day. Kinda like , when cars went from steel to whatever the hell they're made out of today.

If any of you Hogettes visit here. Thank you for your years of dedication and being true ambassadors for this franchise! You will be missed!

Well at least RG3 hasn't had ROY stolen from him...um yet?

I think a newer generation will pick it up. Too tied into the identity of the team.

Hell Washington Hogs would be an awesome nickname right about now...but REDSKINS is here to stay!!

I've always wanted to get something going alongside the Hogs. Much respect to them and their work. Wouldn't mind putting something together with some people, and I have the means of doing it. Just need some ideas and some people to join me. People who could travel to half the games a year home and away, and who have access to capital for charitable purposes. Setting up a nonprofit and figuring out a goal for those funds would be critical.

Call ourselves the G-men and wear gold pants and burgundy jackets. Cause could be a number of different things not just DC related.

I, of course, loved the Hogs but, nothing personal, always found the Hogettes to be a bit of an embarrassment.

I've worn the snout but never the dress. If they had fun, more power to them. I was cool with it and all but it just wasn't my thing. Thanks for sticking it out for so long but I can't say I'm gonna miss ya.

My 2 cents

I pretty much feel the same way. It is sad that an era is coming to an end, but I am not really sad to see cross dressing piggies go away.

Oh come on guys ... the Hogettes are an icon, and it takes some serious stones for pot bellied, hairy legged bubbas to wear dresses in public!

I sat with them a couple of times at RFK, and recall one afternoon that was quite cold, as they passed around a "skin" filled with brandy. Those Guys and Chief Zee have to be the longest running and most consistent super fan mascots in team history, and were always entertaining. There will be something missing without them in the stands.

The good old days.

I hear ya. I always thought they were a bunch of attention starved dopes. Nothing funny about a man in a dress. Total embarrassment to the team and league.

Jose Bugel nicknamed a specific group of players the hogs at a specific time in history. Of course the Steel Curtain, Electric Company and Fearsome Foursome, etc. were nicknames for a specific group of players at a specific time in their teams history. Unfortunately, for some dysfunctional reason, some Redskin fans are still beating a dead horse thirty years later referencing the Hogs. Heck, there's a clown three rows down from me who wears a dress and pig nose to games. Kncuklehead.

Wow... someone, sadly, missed the whole point... and clearly has no sense of humor... nor appreciation for history...

Maybe their time is past... but I still have to feel a bit sorry for you.

Thanks to the Hogettes and all their good charity work.

I met some of them at our tailgates. Some were getting old and forgetful but most were good people and all were just die-hard fans.

Thanks again for your work!

As fans you could still were the snout.

I'm sure once we get a truly dominant team again fans will look for creative ways to cheer and the snouts will come out.
We're close at Oline just need a great guard. Also draft a stud Rb.
