Running Backs: three headed monster!

Post by cowboykillerzRGiii »

Ok folks.. its Friday, I'm bored, no news coming out... So let's bicker about our backs somemore! Pointless pole added feel free to vote- SJ will get the results to the Shannys so your vote DOES matter!

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm not sold on Alfred Davis or his performance against a "weak" saints D. One sack was his fault entirely, tripping rgiii and another play running into him.. and to me he looked every bit of a rookie out there. It's not a huge surprise he can't see lanes as well as Royster, nor does he have the speed of Helu- but when our boy RGiii is out there setting blocks, return the favor! He did progress in the final quarters, after he and (mainly) RGiii tired em out. I just can't help but think Royster and Helu would have tore that D up and at least saved one sack but could have very well set up better blocks when rgiii took off.

Yes I know all three got playing time. Helu looks like the third down back, and Royster the spell back. To me Alfred should he in those shoes- both the other two put up 100 yard games every start they had (save the one game Helu played hurt-smh limping into the endzone) to me the kid has potential just doesn't have the vision our second year players have.

Obviously I'm an Evan Royster supporter, and not just cuz he's on my fantasy team or because he's the all-time leading rusher @ Penn st., but I really think he has the best vision and works best with the zone blocking. Some one mentioned Alfred always shying away from the middle and going outside every carry (similar to Helu but lacking his speed to do so) and people figuring out how to stop him. Is it naive to think Shanny is waiting for that to then switch it up? Is Shanny resting our second year vets and just going with the work horse who is more healthy? Time will tell

One thing is for sure, Royster had the highest ypc of our backfield (once again) with 10 yards on two attempts.

Put me in coach!

Morris is exactly what we need. Consistent positive yardage. While he is no Arian Foster he gets the job done so far. Unless he proves otherwise I say keep him in there. If he needs rest we can always bring in the other guys for a couple of plays.

I disagree. Royster has always gotten positive yardage too, and more than the other two. I'm disappointed he only got two carries last week, but even in that short stint he outgained the others in YPC. I say go with the best runner, and that's Evan, not Alfred.

I dont know? We won the game and Alfred gained massive yardage. I am not against giving a guy a chance. However if it aint broke why fix it?

96 yards is massive? In what universe? I might point out that Evan has never rushed for under 100 in a start.

LOL! 96 yards consistent 3rd down conversions and a win is good in my book. He looked strong and did not fumble. If Royster can come in and do a good job then fine. As for now I have no problem with Morris who is rock solid. Ill take 96 yards a game all day every day. Sprinkle in a TD or two and we are good.

Of course you had no problem with a win. I didn't either. I just want the best product on the field, and I think Evan would have done even better (or is that Evan better).

I think Alfred will get better as he gets more experience. You gotta think that the coaches are pointing out lanes/cutbacks he may have missed so give the kid some time to get better. He has the Terrell Davis type of build and if he can perform anything close to what he did, we will be singing Alfred Morris praises!

Ya for sure. Thats why I want him starting.

I can see the argument for Royster as well. Its a good problem to have.

Agreed. I'm just wondering if Alfred got the start because the other two were kind of knicked up, and Shanny didn't want to tax them too much.

I do not bet .... but my money's on Morris to start this week

we're going to see a lot of all of them - Morris to start with
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I like how you say what I said but in smaller context... It makes it stick out more then when hidden in a 4 paragraph post.. ;)
I think the worst rb on our squad RIGHT NOW is Morris. Lacks speed, vision, and that extra push we get from the other two. Maybe he blows me away, but as we both said Royster already has, and never started a game and put up under 100 yards. And in less attempts no doubt. 5.9 ypc last year!
Even Helus only game under 100 he was limping. Idk the affinity for Alfred. Maybe his cool name reminds good ol coach of Alf!

Shanny says he sees something in Morris that is unique. He has the ability to make folks miss. Shanny has a track record of knowing a little about spotting things in backs others didn't see. If he says he's the man, that's good enough for me. I suspect he will get better each week as he adjusts to the speed and learns to read the gaps better.

Maybe Mike and Kyle are going to feature different players each week, to keep teams from getting film on any one weapon in particular.

Ding ding!

Morris deserved to get the first start after what he did in preseason. He probably saw more action (and therefore had more chance to impress) during preseason because Helu and Royster were carrying knocks. I was a little disappointed that the other two only got four carries between them in week one - I was expecting more rotation than that, especially in the second half. But as they reach 100% fitness, I would still expect those two to come into the gameplan much more, UNLESS Morris keeps them off the field by sheer number of yards and his own performance levels.

I think our running back situation is a long way from settled - Morris has possession right now, but doesn't have a strong hold on it.

Shanny's MO is to ride the "hot hand" when it comes to running backs. Last year's Ram's game was a perfect example of this. Hightower was the starter and Helu was the change of pace guy, but neither was getting the job done. Torain is inserted and he not only is successful, he is "hot" and he plays the rest of the way.

They started the "hot" back, Torain, the next game against Philly, but Philly gamed planned for his lack of speed and the wide 9 shut him down.

Today, AM is the "hot" back. He will start against the Rams, if he has the success that he had last week, we will see only spot performances with Helu and Royster. If the spot performances from Helu and Royster produce big yards, we will see more of them. It is a simple formula for Shanny.

Injuries do effect this formula. I would guess that Royster would have had more carries last week, but was probably nicked up. I love Royster's vision. Also, Shanny said in training camp how much he liked Royster. I see Royster as the first back in if the wholes are tight.

Shanny loves speed, Helu will always factor in the formula. He got Helu in the passing game last week. Shanny will continue to try to take advantage of Helu's speed like lining him up in the wideout position.

With all that said, AM is the man until he lowers the temperature or the other guys get as hot or hotter.

Royster was hotter, albeit only on two carries. It's hard to show what you can do, if you don't get on the field.
