Sean Taylor --

The fifth pick of the 2004 draft, Taylor was a two-time Pro Bowl safety for the Redskins from 2004 to 2007. He was murdered in his home in Miami in 2007. Taylor recorded 299 tackles, 12 interceptions and eight forced fumbles in his short career. He was named to the 2007 Pro Bowl and All-Pro team posthumously.

Assistant coach Joe Bugel –

Best known for his work with the offensive line and the creation of the “Hogs,” Bugel was known as “Boss Hog.” He coached the line from 1981 to 1989, and returned with Joe Gibbs from 2004-2009.

General manager Bobby Beathard -

Beathard was the architect of Joe Gibbs’ first two Super Bowl winning teams, and helped steer the Redskins to a third Super Bowl appearance. His draft picks included Charlie Brown, Gary Clark, Darrell Green, Russ Grimm, Joe Jacoby, Dexter Manley, Charles Mann, Mark May and Art Monk.

Linebacker Lavar Arrington -

The second overall pick of the 2000 draft, Arrington played six seasons for Washington, making three Pro Bowl appearances and earning All-Pro selections three times as well.

Offensive lineman Terry Hermeling --

An offensive tackle for Washington from 1970 to 1980, Hermeling helped anchor the line that paved the way to Washington’s 1972 NFC Championship win. He also was a member of the offense that led the NFC in passing yards in 1975.

Offensive lineman Jon Jansen --

A tackle drafted in the second round out of Michigan, Jansen helped anchor Washington’s line from 1999-2008. He didn’t miss a start from 1999-2003.

Wide receiver Roy Jefferson --

Jefferson was acquired from Dallas via trade in 1971 and played for Washington through the 1976 season. He helped the Redskins reach the Super Bowl in 1972. During his six seasons in Washington, Jefferson recorded 208 catches for 3,119 yards and 16 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl as a Redskin in 1971.

Richie Petitbon -

He played for Washington in 1971 and 1972, helping the team reach the Super Bowl his final season. He was hired as secondary coach in 1978 and served as defensive coordinator from 1981 to 1992. He also served as head coach in 1993.

Chris Samuels –

The third overall pick of the 2000 draft, Samuels started at left tackle and made six Pro Bowls for Washington from 2000 to 2009. He started all 141 games he played in.

I remember on his draft day, I was watching at a bar. Half of the room sighed because they wanted Kellen Winslow. Then they showed Sean's Miami highlights and by the end of that clip, the entire room was excited about the pick.

I saw Sean Taylor once...the Jets game in the Meadowlands his last year. He was assigned to organize the place kicker / snapper, who practice at different distances from both ends of the field. Sean T was making notes...probably distance, which hash-mark, wind.

As kicking end, Taylor took the ball and leaped in the air to stuff the ball between the crossbars.

Just energy and fun spilling over before the game.

He never got the chance to do all he could. I still remember the news of the shooting, the virtual vigil on Hogs Net, the gloom.

...and one of the best trades George Allen ever made. Played mostly for the Steelers before landing with the Redskins. Didn't old George trade Coton Speyrer, the Skins 2nd round pick, for Jefferson?

I was hoping you'd tell me. I couldn't find the trade terms.

I was going to suggest Speyrer, then felt guilty about naming a trade from 40 years ago without looking it up. Didn't see a transactions-list for Jefferson's career. It's much easier in baseball: Baseball Reference will tell you everything.

Either it was Speyrer, or George traded a second round (future) pick. George was trading future picks fast & furious in '71 and '72.

Lavar a top 80 skin???

I totally agree with the others, but not sure about Lavar. He was a good player, but I'm not sure about top 80.

Beathard, on the other hand, should be in the top 5 with Gibbs, Baugh, Green, and JKC. An arguement can be made for Sonny, but those are my top 5. I wouldn't consider Lombardi only because he was here for 1 year only.

In terms of ST's # being retired, we have to remember that the only number the skins have officially retired is Baugh's 33. I like the fact the have "unofficially" retired it with the likes of Riggins, Green, Taylor, Sonny, Monk, Brown, etc. Even with that, I wouldn't be against the "official" retirement label for ST's #21.
