Rookie Olinemen

Post by HarleyHog »

Due to circumstances, I did not get to watch much of the game. I got to watch RGIII's 3 series, and Wrexy's first two.(which served as excellent contrast to reassure me we got the right QB). I focused on LeRibeus on two plays, and he seemed to do ok. How are he and Gettis looking so far?

Gettis looked like the better of the two to me. LeRibeus is obviously athletic and strong but wasn't always positioned very well IMO.

The link below contains a report on all the draft picks, to include LeRibeus and Gettis. I posted Tom Compton since little is being said about his performance.

7. OT Tom Compton: Early on Compton looked like he had a long way to go. But in watching him the last few days of practice you could see some improvement. Granted, this came vs. backups, but when you’re a sixth-round pick you must show you can at least handle your own vs. these players before moving up. He’s worked exclusively at left tackle. The book on him before the draft was that he lacked athleticism.

Projection: Practice squad/backup. Last year the Redskins kept only three backup linemen. Because of injuries they might need to keep four. It’s tough to see Compton being part of an eight-man group. If Jammal Brown returns, then Tyler Polumbus is the backup OT and the interior backups would be LeRibeus and Gettis and/or Maurice Hurt.

I focused a bit on Compton last week, as I have family ties to the University of South Dakota.

He looked to me to be trying to catch up to the speed of the pro game, which is understandable. What I was impressed with was even if the player gained a step on him he seemed to have the speed/quickness to keep contact with the player to push him past the QB.

Unathletic I don't get, as his reputation was being quick and having good feet before the draft. I was pretty encouraged and expect him to show big improvement throughout this year. I don't think he could contribute as a starter this season, but I think he has the potential to be a player down the road.

Both Gettis and LeRibeus will make the team, but I think Gettis has a chance to get significant playing time this season if injury strikes.

I think Gettis played really well. Also, a few other guys looked pretty good as well but was watching on my laptop and don't recall guys' new numbers on the team. All in all, the line looked better than I expected - especially the 1st group. I'm not too concerned about the RT spot as I was before. Polumbus looked rough in the first series but then after that, he started playing a lot better. Would like to see better run blocking but the pass protection was better than I expected overall.
