"A "sincerely regretful" David Diehl apologized to his teammates on Tuesday for causing an unnecessary distraction at the start of the Giants' three-day minicamp. He also vowed to prove to the world that despite his DWI arrest he's still "a positive role model" and "I'm going to continue to be one."
"It's a mistake that I guarantee will never, ever happen again," Diehl said in front of his locker in his first interview since he was arrested in Queens on Sunday night. "I'm going to help other people make sure that they don't make the same decision that I made in this circumstance. And I'm going to become a stronger person because of it."
Diehl, 31, didn't explain what happened on Sunday night when he crashed his BMW into parked cars in Astoria and later blew a .18 – twice the legal limit – on a Breathalyzer test, according to police. But he did promise several times to be "accountable" and added "if anybody understands the magnitude of this situation it's me."
And after a 48-hour period that Diehl said was "unlike anything else I've ever experienced in my life," he promised to work to restore his reputation in any way that he can.
