Helu is NOT a tough guy....?

Post by tribeofjudah »

What does Shanny mean by this statement? It's kinda insulting, if you ask me.

Maybe Shanny said it with the classic SMIRK on his face.....but still

Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan was impressed that Roy Helu "got tougher throughout the [season]" as a rookie.

Analysis: "He's not a tough guy, but he handled the pounding in the NFL," said Shanahan. "The biggest key with NFL backs is when you get hit for nothing or one yard, do you follow forward for three yards or do you fall back for zero yards? He really finished runs well ... He was able to do it throughout the game and not get worn down by it." Helu will likely be the lead back in a tandem attack in 2012

This was Kyle, not Mike. But I think what he meant was that he's not a big back, like a Brandon Jacobs. Or maybe he meant that he's soft-spoken when not playing football. Still, it is is a douchey thing to say, but then, it was Kyle, after all.

You're right, it wasn't the "smirkey" Mike....it was his spawn.

Yes, it was a douchey thing to say about a RB who gave it his all.

Until a RB proves he can do it consistently over a 16 game schedule, he's just another body. The great ones are durable and can withstand the pounding of a grueling 16 game schedule.

I'd have to hear the audio. There's two ways to take that.

He could have meant it like...he isn't a guy that'll initiate punishment.

Or he could have meant it as, he's soft.

I assume the former...

I read this before coming to THN and did not take it to mean his physical toughness. I took it to mean that as the year progressed, he was getting better at gaining more yards after being initially hit.

What are you talking about? This was clearly sarcasm and it is obvious that MS or KS ( whoever saud it) thinks Helu is tough.

Sounds like a flubbed quote that looks worse in print than what he might have meant. Kyle does come off as douchey though.

Hopefully he's not so big of a douche that the players know how he meant it.

Seems like Shanahan meant that Helu got better as the season went on, and now is a primo RB. Not an insult...

^^^ - thanks welch - that was my take on it as well

some fans (and most of the media) just like to paint a negative perspective - no worries here

our offense is going to be just fine with a few key additions and some quality depth

hopefully Kyle makes some progress too
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

This is interesting because it appears to be Mike Shanahan showing his age with the usage of the word "Tough guy". In the old days that meant a trouble maker or a "bruiser " somebody who was big and was able to bowl people over. Helu is a quick back, but not a "tough guy".

I kind of doubt it, as the quote was from KYLE Shanahan...

But, regardless, it seems benign enough... I can't imaging that he meant it as anything but a positive comment on Helu's game... And, having seen Helu's demeanor, I don't believe he'll take it in any but a positive way...

I read it as "not a tough-guy" (not a bruiser).
It could also be read as "not a 'tough' guy"(feeble).

I hope I'm right!

One of the consistencies wtih both Helu, and Royster was... they almost always moved forward after first contact. Rarely did they move backwards after that hit.

How refreshing was that one simple fact?

He's not a toughguy.. He is a TOUGH guy.

Simple spelling error. He doesn't talk ish on or off the field doesn't wear tap out shirts 2 sizes too small on fight night or excessively show boat after gaining three yards. Instead he plows through tackles makes cuts and leaps over people.

VERY. I miss using words like "bruiser" to describe RBs.
