NFL Sunday Ticket

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

NFL Sunday Ticket

Post by grampi »

The NFL was smart enough to resolve the issues causing the lockout and I'm guessing their motivation was they knew they would lose far more money if there was no football this year. However, for the life of me, I can't figure out why they can't see how much money they're losing by keeping the NFL Sunday Ticket exclusive with DirecTV. Not only would they make a boat load more money by offering the ticket to EVERYONE by allowing ALL the service providers to offer it, this would also make it possible for these providers to compete with each other, making it possible for the price of the ticket go down for subscribers. I don't see any losers with this idea, but I also don't see why the NFL doesn't see this....

I wish they had it as well but given that directv is offering it for free, it seems like a no brainer for folks to sign up if they're a football fan outside of their market area. I really like Directv and just got it for free this year. Last year I paid $150 for the season. They always negotiate.

Aren't they now offering the Sunday NFL Ticket free to anybody who signs up with DirecTV?

Yup, they want to OWN the market. It's a good move for them. However, for us who have had it year in year out....No SUCH DISCOUNT.

Frank said he wasn't a happy customer, he was so upset he didn't even want to be a customer anymore. No problem with the sports packages but the rest of the services sucked

Frank got the right CSR and they gave him the standard line...

Frank listened without interruption because Frank knew the CSR was reeading from a script. Then Frank said "yeah whatever I can get this same service from Dish Network (or whoever the competitor is) I just want to cancel my subscription The CSR did their best and agreed to transfer him to cancelation, once the CSR gavee up they told Frank what they were doing and where he was being transfered to.

Due to some unknown mistake Frank was transfered to retention... He was asked " How may I help you"...

Frank had to repeat his web of lies but not not onl got his NFLN free but a bunch of channels included that he'll never look at.

I'm sure his monthly fees went down as the services provided went up

I think it's total BS if DTV is offering free Sunday Ticket to new subscribers, while all of us loyal repeat subcribers get are higher rates every year. I've had the Ticket every year now since 2003 and the price has gone up EVERY year. This total BS!!!! We either pay the ridiculous price, or not be able to watch our team play. I'm sick of the monopoly. We should start a petition to the NFL to get them to allow ALL service providers to offer the Ticket and lower it's price. There's no reason they couldn't offer the Ticket for $150 a season and still make a ton of profit.

I so missed the Redskins every Sunday when I moved away from the DC area. DirectTV is better then anyone else and Sunday Ticket is dirt cheap for what you get. Stop whining. We're so lucky to have a cheap way to get every Redskin game in glorious HDTV. Between Sunday Ticket and the Internet to keep up with Skins articles and discuss them on message boards we get so much for so little. I can't image moaning about it. Please.

The problem for me is that I have to have DTV for the Sundat Ticket but Comcast won't let DTV carry the Phillies, Flyers and Sixers. Not that I am huge fans of those teams but I like to watch baseball and the Phillies are fun to watch. The courts ruled over a year ago that Comcast cannot withhold the content from DTV but nothing has changed. As long as corporations have the same rights as individuals in this country nothing much will change.

Cheap? Do you always assume everyone is making 150K? I'm working 2 jobs... Sunday Ticket is a luxury that I cannot afford... especially today. That I am not allowed to include Fox 5 WTTG in my DirecTV package... with games unblocked... is a purely political contrivance. Seriously? Considering that, you still think an additional whatever it costs nowdays for Sunday Ticket is a bargain?

Maybe you have a money tree in your back yard, but most of us don't. The first year ('03) I paid $159 for the season. That wasn't too bad, but over the last 8 years, the price is now approaching $300 a season. Why? Has the cost of providing the service doubled? No. It's nothing but greed. Because DTV has a monoply on the rights, they know they can basically charge whatever they want. If the price was still under $200 a season, I think that would be a fair price, but as it is, the price has gotten way outta hand....

It's only roughly $20 a game. Granted it's fun to actually go to a game, but you not only get the whole season for the price of a couple of tickets to one game but you can watch every other NFL game. My daughter's becoming quite the Pats fan and since we already have it for the Skins we can watch the Pats games for free as well as any other big game we want to watch. You go to a bar and watch the game and buy a few drinks and it's over $20. How is that expensive?

Yeah, it's cheap, for what you get.

8 years ago it was $10 a game. Do you still think it'll be cheap in 8 more years when it's $40 a game? At the rate they're going with the price increases, that's what it'll be...

The technology exists to permit me to watch any program that I want. DirecTV is capable of providing it. It has been determined by our fine employees in Washington that I must watch only the local channels out of Portland, Maine. This means that, on Sundays, unless I pay an exhorbitant amount that FAR exceeds costs, I have the option of watching the New England Patriots, OR the NY Giants. On occasion, they will toss a different bone. Otherwise, the local Fox affiliate feels that there is greater interest in the cheezy infomercials they run in lieu of the network NFL feed.

Considering that I should be able to pay a 5 or 6 dollar/month premium and be able to elect the DC Fox and CBS affiliates... yeah, it's expensive. When it IS available on a DirecTV feed other than their Sunday Ticket package... they black it out. That, sir, is a load. If you were not wealthy, you'd be equally ripped.

You know I'm with you on this one, how Government can control the marketplace like this is beyond me. But they do.

I spent years getting the same crappy choices as you. I left the DC area in 93 and it a decade before I got to watch the Skins games regularly. I just can't complain about the cost of that, I really missed it.

As for the cost, DirectTV I understand actually pays the NFL more then they charge for Sunday Ticket and they figure they recoup the cost by getting customers who only have DirectTV because of Sunday Ticket. I'm not included in that, I'd have it anyway. I love DirectTV. So when you say that it exceeds the cost, you're only counting the transmission cost. The NFL is an expensive business, most of the money ends up paying for the cost of putting on the entertainment. E.G., the players, stadiums, etc...

If you're going to ask why it's televised locally free, keep in mind local stations are paid for commercials to air during that time. You're not likely to go to DC area businesses living in Maine, they don't want to pay for your eyeballs.

I completely agree with you on this. We are very fortunate that we have an option to watch our favorite team even if we aren't living in our home teams area. I remember growing up and I could only watch a few Redskins games, they didn't have this option back then.

The way I look at it is this. It's about 20.00 a week for how many games do you get to chose from? I think you have 13-15 because the local teams or games broadcasted locally are blacked out on the Ticket. So pretty much if I take the lowest amount of games (13) then your paying 1.55 per game. I don't make a lot of money either, however I was able to budget and make it work.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely think it's great that we have the option to watch our team from anywhere in the country. All I'm saying is it could be better for everyone if the ticket was available from ANY service provider. Don't you think a lot more people would subscribe to the ticket if it was available through their service provider? More subscribers = more revenues to the NFL which also = the ability to lower subscription prices. I really can't see why anyone would want DTV to continue having sole rights to the ticket....

So here's the deal - Nik was kinda right. I called Directv and said that I've been a loyal customer for years. I refer them to my client (I sell homes) and do not take part in the referral bonus program b/c I don't want to look cheap. I purchase NFL Ticket, On the Go NFL, College Football and Basketball every year and have for years. I have the premium package (all the channels), etc.

So while watching TV, I noticed that they are offering it for free to new customers. I said that because I'm a loyal customer, i wanted the same deal. I Cust. Service Rep couldn't help me and I said transfer me to your supervisor. Spoke with that person and said the same. He said, I'll give you $20 off for 12 months. Well I said that the ticket was over $300 and that's not good enough and to transfer me to his supervisor. Said please hold and came back and gave it for free as a credit to my account.

I do that with all my utilities like phone/internet, etc. Keep calling back until you speak with someone who'll do it. Just have to be persistent. It's not being cheap. It's being smart in my opinion. Why overpay for something when you can get it for cheaper. Just seems stupid not to try.
