When free agents don't get signed and then the "writing is on the wall"...meaning it's time to hang 'em UP...!!!
This was true of Smoot, I think, and others (can't remember who so they may be insignificant players anyway).
This may happen to Portis, Randy Moss, T.O. It's sad cuz they may NOT be ready to retire, but no calls from other teams simply means it's TIME TO HANG EM UP.
It's kinda SAD....

Those three will probably sign with someone at some point this year, but they are all nearing the end
Hail to the Redskins!

The NFL has been a violent sport for a long time and the players are aware of that - you don't get to make the big bucks if you don't make the choice to be involved with the mayhem
The player's make the choice to get the money and in exchange they take the abuse to their bodies that is involved with being a part of the NFL
if the later injuries are not worth the money you made then you probably made a bad career choice

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

T.O. is still rehab-ing, Moss has retired (after not getting any calls, he had his agent make some calls), then there's CP. He's still got money (even though he dropped the asking price for his house more than $1M and it still hasn't sold) but not as much as he wants. Had two completely different injuries and has been beat up in two years but took a hellofa pounding before then.
He'll sign late into camp or early in regular season. Moss and T.O. are more than likely done

as far as those 3 (Moss, Owens & Portis) are concerned - I'd agree that Moss & Owens are likely not playing - I do think that Portis can help if he can accept that he's not the RB he was - this guy is still possibly one of the best RBs at protecting the QB and there is no doubt about his heart
