I love Rod Gardner

I love Rod Gardner, but I'll be opened minded about this...

This is the strongest evidence I have seen yet that coach Gibbs believes in Thrash/Russell/McCants/Jacobs (Still, no idea which one)

As much as a like Rod... we can get something for him, something really good, any guesses on what he'll be traded for? a pick? a defensive lineman?

i'd guess a pick in this year's draft, if possible. maybe pick up a dlineman that way. i would venture to say he'll go for a second rounder. to baltimore, perhaps.....?

Rod Smith is getting old, maybe we can trade him to Denver for OUR 2nd rounder back :-)

Rod Gardner is not old at all.

I don't think that Gibbs is going to get rid of Gardner this year. He only has one year left on his contract. I think he will give him the benefit of the doubt and see what happens this year. I think that some of Gardner's so-so performance last year was due to the failure of the Spurrier experiment, and the fact that he was getting used to no longer being the No. 1 guy. Still, didn't he have like 80 catches? Thats pretty good!

i think it would be a huge mistake to trade gardner unless we could get a 1st rounder maybe...i'll give that rod hasn't developed to a star but he is pretty consistant and i think a very decent #2 receiver. if we don't get a first round draft pick then we better get another receiver because we don't anyone else on our squad that is a legit #2 at this point in their careers

Rod Smith is Denver's #1 reciever who IS getting old, who COULD be replaced by Rod Gardner...

Anyway, why would Gibbs keep Gardner around when so much could be gained by trading him?

Too bad we had to throw it his way about 160 times for him to catch that 80. I say deal 50/50 while we can. He's going to want top money next year and we can't afford it, so we'll lose him anyways.

No... His best season was 71 catches for 1006 yards.

I think losing him would be stupid, ala replacing IFY. You cna't cut or trade these blue collar, under the radar performers. DMAC showed that he can be a great #3, and an even better redzone threat. We haven't seem much more. Taylor Jacobs played about as often as you and I, and James Thrash is a decent #3, possibly a #2 for a few weeks to fill a hole if neccessary.

Coles is already a stud, and Gardner is the only other WR we can say has the potential to be a star, with any true conviction or statistical evidence. McCants is great, but without Rod, having him as the second with Jacobs and Thrash directly behind him on the depth chart, the WR position isn't nearly as good.

The reason were so deep is because we have 2 great starters. If Rod goes, we'd have 1 great starter, and a good starter that might be great.

If we can get a third or maybe (doubtful) second pick for Gardner I say we do it. I like him, but it's his contract year. If he performs really well we won't be able to afford him next year, and if he performs poorly then we won't resign him and will get nothing from a past 1st round pick.

I think it's unfortunate but Gibbs can't afford to take a chance when he can get good value for him now, there's very little cap it, and he just hasn't seen enough to know if he can stop Rod from droppign balls.

This draft is deep enough in defensive lineman we could get someone to help us in the 3rd round, and our offense can take up the slack for Gardner's loss.

To be honest the NFL is littered with #2 receivers who are just as good as Gardner (and selected in later rounds). He has had one good season so far and does have a tendency to drop balls (hence the 50/50 nickname). Possession receivers are a dime a dozen. I will admit that Spurrier misused him last season...how many times did he send Rod deep instead of Coles? Ridiculous and unfair to Rod who is a good #2 but not a great one. Bottom line is if Gibbs thinks McCants is good enough to become #2 in place of Gardner, are you going to argue with him? In that case why not try and get something from a wide receiver starved team? A pick would be most likely IMO and we would be LUCKY to get a 2nd rounder.

Trading Gardner would be a great move. The depth at WR gives the Skins trading power and Gardner will bring the most in return (Coles is not on the market). Between McCants and a developing Jacobs that should more then make up any loss of Gardner. Plus, I recall Gardner making a number of penalities last year that cost the team first downs.

I would hate to see Rod go he is one of the nicest guys on the team. Everytime I have seen him he will stop and talk.

I'm a big fan of Rod Gardner too. He's been a solid player and I agree he seems like a good guy.

Unfortunately I have to agree that he is also a player that we could probably afford to lose if it will help us fill a spot on the D. McCants or Thrash should be able to play the #2 spot capably, ESPECIALLY with Coles on the other side. Plus a healthy Taylor Jacobs might be ready to show us what he can do this season.

I'm not hyped about these moves, but I understand.

I get your point now.

No one is going to give us a No. 1 pick for Gardner. It's just not going to happen. Gardner is too good to trade for a third or even second round pick, but not good enough to net us a first round pick or marquis player.

There weren't many good WR available as free agents this year. In fact, I don't think there are any good free agent WR left now at all.

That being said, this may be a good time to trade a WR like Gardner. Maybe we get more than we think for him?

nah, the draft is deep at wr this year, and that hurts. why spend a first or second rounder on gardner when a team can get a cheaper version in the draft?

Gardner is a former first round pick. He's still young. He has three years of experience in the NFL under his belt. Also, he played pretty well those three years.

The situation is similar to us giving up a 1st rounder for Coles. Gardner maybe won't get us a 1st rounder. I believe there are plenty of teams that would give up a 2nd round pick,though. Especially if he signed a contract extension.
