Josh Wilson trying to convince Tatupu to join Redskins
Eighty-seven of the 89 players on the Washington Redskins‘ roster are taller than Josh Wilson. But what the 5-foot-9 cornerback lacks in stature, he makes up for in energy, speed and enthusiasm.
That’s true off the field, too, as Wilson is working to convince free agent middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu to join the Redskins. Tatupu, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, took a physical with the team Thursday, according to coach Mike Shanahan.
“I’m definitely trying to persuade him,” Wilson said. “That’s my guy. I love to play with Lofa. That’s one of my favorite players I’ve ever had the opportunity to be on the field with. He’s taught me so much.”
Wilson and Tatupu were teammates on the Seattle Seahawks from 2007 until Wilson was dealt to the Baltimore Ravens last year. He agreed to terms of a three-year deal with the Redskins as a free agent July 27.
Good friends today, Wilson and Tatupu’s relationship wasn’t always smooth. Raised in Prince George’s County, Wilson starred at Maryland and joked he couldn’t find Seattle on a map. As a Seahawks rookie in 2007, he scuffled with Tatupu.
“Whenever I get into a minor heated discussion with somebody, they become one of my closest friends,” Wilson said. “After that we had nothing but respect. I think he wanted to see if I really had the fire inside of me.”
The Seahawks released the 28-year-old Tatupu on July 31 after three consecutive seasons beset by injuries. When healthy, the 6-foot, 250-pound Tatupu can anchor a defense.
“As soon as I heard Petey [Carroll] and the crew let him go, I was like, ‘Hey, man,’” Wilson said. “We’re communicating in good fashion. Playing with him would be another blessing for me, but I’ve got to remember it’s where he wants to go.”

But with Rocky back, who rides the pine?Red_One43 wrote:I suspect that the reason that he keeps getting hurt is the same reason Landry had several injuries. Guys like them hit hard on every play and never let up. That takes a toll on their bodies. I would love to have a guy like Tatupu on our team.

I'd imagine Rocky would be the odd man out.skinsfan#33 wrote:But with Rocky back, who rides the pine?Red_One43 wrote:I suspect that the reason that he keeps getting hurt is the same reason Landry had several injuries. I look at it more that Rocky IS a backup and if he starts he's filling in that we didn't get a starter. But he's going to play a lot anyway.Irn-Bru wrote:I'd imagine Rocky would be the odd man out.skinsfan#33 wrote:But with Rocky back, who rides the pine?Red_One43 wrote:I suspect that the reason that he keeps getting hurt is the same reason Landry had several injuries. I wonder if Rocky has any trade value... we DID almost trade him and a pick for Lance Briggs once.

No because he's not a fit here and everyone know we'd release him.... UNLESS someone has a major blow at weakside in a 4-3. I'd say we could get a 4th at best.Skinsfan55 wrote:I wonder if Rocky has any trade value... we DID almost trade him and a pick for Lance Briggs once.

Doubtful, since he was a FA and no one signed him. If they didn't want him when they could get him for nothing, why would they want to trade for him.Skinsfan55 wrote:I wonder if Rocky has any trade value... we DID almost trade him and a pick for Lance Briggs once.

He was a restricted free agent. They couldn't have gotten him for nothing.skinsfan#33 wrote:Doubtful, since he was a FA and no one signed him. He's not Andre Carter who as not a fit. He's a better fit for the 4-3. But we are not going to cut him so if they want him it is going to take a trade.Chris Luva Luva wrote:No because he's not a fit here and everyone know we'd release him.... Any updates here? I think this signing would be a good gain for us... Our D is shaping up nicely with the safeties being the next area to look at. If LL can get healthy and someone else can play next to him I think this D will be tough especially if we add this guy our depth looks good w rocky as a back up
