Thoughts on Japan...
You've all seen the recent devastation of the earthquake, tsunami, and possible nuclear meltdown in Japan. How very, very sad. It will be several months before we know the full scope of the damage.
Japan is a mighty nation but oh....how they've suffered. 1945 atomic bomb and now this. I don't know which is WORSE...???
In terms of death toll, 1945 was massive: According to the Atomic Archives the total casualties for Hiroshima were 66,000 dead and 69,000 injured and for Nagasaki 39,000 and 29,000.
In terms of physical damage, this recent event seems just as BAD as 1945.... I just don't know, I'm not an expert.
I hate to see the suffering of people....anyone, regardless of race, religions, creed, color....etc.
My thoughts, concerns, and prayers go to our Lord for the help and healing of Japan.

It was human suffering....none-the-less
It is, they have taken heavy losses. I was watching today about how almost an entire town has almost vanished.
I also have a feeling the nuclear contamination is a lot worse than they are admitting to.
Support the troops, especially our snipers.
Re: Thoughts on Japan...
My wife is Japanese. She was born in Sendai.
Sometimes when we watch a movie or some TV show a mushroom cloud appears and she has to cover her eyes. Then we call it quits for the night and prepare for the next day. This latest disaster has been tough on her. Luckily, all her friends and relatives are safe.
My wife feels some shame regarding the a-bomb and WWII but it's minimal because she blames the military of her nation, not the people or the Emporer. This earthquake on the other hand is devoid of shame. It's pure sadness and it that regard it is worse. It was completely undeserved. She remains proud of her people as do I.
One thing that has struck me is the absence of looting. If a tsunami just off the US west coast sent a 10 meter wave at California and LA lost all power I shudder to think of what we'd be seeing on TV.
Our cultures are so different. I'll never be able to get as close to my wife as we'd like. Our children are an amazing mix. I feel like the future of our countries and the world depends on people like them.
Thanks for posting and reading.

I just moved from Japan last year after living there for 13 years. My wife is Japanese too and I always thought that the big quake would come sometime while we were still there but we left just in time. We lived in the Tokyo area and would have been fine anyway though.
Luckily her family in Tokyo is fine but she doesn't know about the other 1/2 of her family who lived up north.
It wasn't just 1 town that was effected either. It would be like if every coastal city in California was wiped out all at the same time. The good thing is that their northern cities aren't on the coast and mostly it's all small fishing towns. Sendai is miles inland and wasn't destroyed by the tsunami and almost all the buildings still stand after the earthquake.
If we had a 9.0 in California everything would be leveled. Los Angeles took major damage 15+ years ago from a 6.5 or something. Imagine if it was 1000x stronger and lasted for 3-4 minutes with hundreds of aftershocks some of which were bigger than the LA or SF earthquakes themselves. If we had a 33foot Tsunami here it would wipe out San Francisco, most of LA and San Diego.
Tsunami's are probably the reason why they don't have big cities on the coast in Japan though. If this: http://earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/hi ... 00-eng.php
happened again over here you'd see how Millions were killed in the US and Canada because we did build all of our cities right on the coast. That 9.0 was such a long time ago for us that we didn't even live on this coast at the time. If it had happened in 1900 instead of 1700 I wonder where our big west coast cities would be now?

Good points FTW....but much of San Fran is high up on cliffs and bluffs. Would 30 foot waves knock out the high ground? I'm not sure....but yes, most of the low lying coastal parts will be DUST.
I'm 4 miles from the shore in Huntington Beach CA....in a flood zone. I gotta move and buy a house on higher ground....YIKES.
