Anyone have any insights to the upcoming Free Agents at this position? I remember reading something a while back saying their was a NT on Miami who was young, good and a FA but I am not sure if I read that right. With no real options in the draft, FA is going to be where we find our starter and hopefully answer.
I know some people on here want Anthony Bryant to be that guy, but realistically, I dont think you can count on him. I know he had 2 good games to end the season but look at the opponents. Jacksonville's O Line is nothing special and NY had a backup playing the whole game at C (remember their starter had that knee injury early on). Bryant is no spring chicken (30 y/o), and has been around the league for years. Its a stretch to think that it "clicked" for him with the Redskins after being cut from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins.
Dont get me wrong, I think he could be valuable as a backup and rotational player, but to call him our answer at NT might be a stretch. The NT is THE MOST important player in a 3-4 anchoring that D Line, so I was curious to get ppls insights on potential FAs.

I think determining who's a FA at this point is a bit early with the whole CBA on the horizon. From what I'm hearing, the market will be flooded most likely with FA's so until they get that worked out, no one can really say at this point who will def. be available or not unless they have been released.
This comes from Phins Phocus - A Dolphins site- We aren't the only ones after a NT
http://www.phinsphocus.com/2010-article ... ackle.html
Top 5 Possible 2011 Free Agent Nose Tackles
1. Shaun Rogers
Team: Cleveland Browns
Size: 6'4, 350
Age: 31
2011 Status: UFA
There's no denying that Shaun Rogers has been one of the better DT/NT's in the league over the years. But at age 31, he wouldn't exactly be the long-term answer ... Looking at other nose tackles in the league though, like the Dolphins' very own Jason Ferguson and the Viking's Pat Williams (age 37) for instance, Rogers may still have a good three or four years left in the tank after 2010.
2. Haloti Ngata
Team: Baltimore Ravens
Size: 6'4, 345
Age: 26
2011 Status: UFA
Yes, Ngata has been a defensive end for the Ravens, but unlike Randy Starks, he meets the prototypical size requirements for a move inside. At age 26, he also would be the long-term solution the ... would be coveting. It's unlikely the Ravens let him get away though, and who knows if he would even be willing to sign with a team that expects him to take up a new position.
3. Trey Lewis
Team: Atlanta Falcons
Size: 6'3, 316
Age: 25
2011 Status: UFA
Lewis has started a total of six games in two seasons for the Falcons 4-3 scheme. He has the size to sign with a 3-4 team though, and take up nose tackle. The only problem is, his production in limited action suggest he isn't anything more than a backup, regardless of defensive scheme.
4. Ronald Fields
Team: Denver Broncos
Size: 6'2, 314
Age: 28
2011 Status: UFA
Fields started all sixteen games for the Broncos last season, and is still at a very signable age, if he hits the open market. However, Pro Football Focus ranked him the 66th nose tackle/defensive tackle in 09'. That was worse than Miami's Paul Soliai, who is also in the last year of his contract. From the looks of things, re-signing Soliai appears to be a more attractive option than signing Fields.
5. Ron Edwards
Team: Kansas City Chiefs
Size: 6'3, 315
Age: 30
2011 Status: UFA
Edwards is nearly the same player Fields is, only older and litte less productive (ranked 76th by PFF).
2011 NFL Draft: Top 5 Nose Tackles
1. Stephen Paea
School: Oregon State
Size: 6'1, 311
Year: Senior
Paea has the potential to be a first-round pick in 2011, and is considered to be one of the premiere defensive lineman in the nation. He's quick for his size, and has great lower body strength.
2. Jerrell Powe
School: Ole Miss
Size: 6'2, 328
Year: Senior
Powe could come off the board soon after Paea, as he is arguably the best pure nose tackle in the 2011 class. He has some character concerns off the field, but his work ethic on the field has been fantastic. He is powerful, as expected, but his mobility suprisingly doesn't take too much of a hit with his size.
3. Jarvis Jenkins
School: Clemson
Size: 6'4, 310
Year: Senior
Jenkins has good size and athleticism, but he may be better suited to play defensive end in the 3-4. Of course, that wouldn't necessarily be the case with the Dolphins, as we have already mentioned how Starks, Ferguson, and Ratliff don't have prototypical measurables. Following the trend of the rest of the league though, Jenkins might have leverage issues with his height, and slightly less than ideal weight.
4. Kendrick Ellis
School: Hampton
Size: 6'5, 340
Year: Redshirt Senior
Ellis has been dominate against questionable competition at Hampton. Just like Jenkins though, his height could prevent him from playing nose tackle at the next level.
5. Phil Taylor
School: Baylor
Size: 6'4, 355
Year: Senior
Character concerns will surround Taylor, as he was expelled from Penn State before he wound up with Baylor. Nonetheless, Taylor will be tempting for any 3-4 team in the middle to late rounds, as he possesses Terrance Cody type size.

thats awesome research man! I would be OK with Rodgers on a 2-3 yr deal. He is not the long term guy though.
Maybe Powe in the 2nd? Im not as concerned with character as I think Shanny wins a that battle, especially with a rookie.

Yea, i was thinkin it would be nice to have a shot at him in the second. Haven't seem him play but his height/weight is Raji-esque.skins2357 wrote:thats awesome research man! I would be OK with Rodgers on a 2-3 yr deal. He is not the long term guy though.

Ngata is a GREAT player, but he does not play NT for the Ravens. He is a DE and I am not sure why he keeps being listed as a NT. He only plays 5-10 snaps per game at NT, the rest at DE. Kind of like how we used Vonnie Holiday this year...is Holiday a NT since he played there 5-10 snaps a game?
I would love to Ngata as a DE as he would bolster our D Line, but bringing people in who dont fit the scheme is what has gotten us in trouble in the past. Ngata playing NT does not fit the scheme, he is a 3-4 DE / 4-3 DT who loves to rush the passer (Kind of like someone else who did not want to play NT)
Now, he as a DE, with Carriker on the other side and Powe in the 2nd with Bryant filling in there too, and you might have a pretty beast D Line. Either way, I think you need to invest on defense this year.
I know everyone wants/expects a QB at 10 and in the 2nd, and I would be fine with that, but I also would not mind getting some players that fit the 3-4 (Ayers/Von Miller in 1st) (Powe in 2nd). Just saying though

What about Paul Soliai (the NT from Miami I believe skins2357 was alluding to.) He's 27, 6-4 and 355. He made huge bounds this season after a mediocre first couple seasons and he's definitely big enough to play NT in the NFL.
NT is arguably the most important position in the 3-4 and it's the one we should commit the most resources to.

I think thats who I was talking about skinsfan. I wonder how this guy compares to some of the other free agents out there, or if Powe in the 2nd is still our best option.Skinsfan55 wrote:What about Paul Soliai (the NT from Miami I believe skins2357 was alluding to.) Provided we don't overpay, I wouldn't mind seeing an older NT brought in under the assumption that he'll hold down the position for a few years. It just might not be in the cards for us to pick up a stud in the draft this year, but if you can buy some time with a vet then there's always a chance next year or the year after.langleyparkjoe wrote:Spud I just want someone in their 20s that we can keep for a while.. If we are able to get a draft pick high enough to draft Fairley we're not drafting Fairley

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I would love to have Aubrayo Franklin from the niners he's 30 and we could draft somebody in the 5th or even go undrafted or keep working with Bryant and polish him for a few years while Franklin holds the fort. He's 6'1" 317 but he's strong like bull plus being shorter he can get that leverage none of the guys on our team can get now. I'm not sure what he would command moneywise but would be cheaper than Ngata. Being in the midwest I don't get to see the niners much but what I have seen I've liked. What do you think Frank you probably see the niners some out in LA?

c'mon guys - I hate to think of what we'd have to give up to move up in the draft AND I hope that we can find a way to pick up as many draft picks as possible - we need a bunch of picks and whether we have to trade players or trade down, I'm all for it - we are not just a few good players away from getting back to seeing a consistently competitive product on the field
I really hope that we can find a way to pick up some young free agents and get about 9-10 picks (or more) out of the draft
we are going to see a lot of different faces in B&G uniforms this coming season

Im for using this years draft to help our defense, use FA to help the offense. Keep trading players (Mcnabb, Albert) to acquire picks in next years draft. Then we should also be receiving supplimental pick in next years draft for losing Carlos and Rocky.
This year you draft OLB at 10 (Ayers, Von Miller) and NT in 2nd (Powe). Use the rest of the pick for depth on defensive side of the ball.
Use FA to sign some young OL (Harris, Rachal, Joseph)
Next year you should have the ammo to trade up to #1 to get Luck with the supplimental picks and picks you acquired for Albert and Donovan.
Ahhhhhhhh I can dream right? Its so easy to do on paper haha

You can't trade comp picks. We need a QB much more than an OLB.
