LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. –The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed running back Jeremiah Johnson to their practice squad and released running back Quinn Porter.
Johnson (5-9, 218) was originally signed by the Houston Texans as a college free agent on May 1, 2009. He was placed on the Reserve/Injured list during training camp. Johnson was waived by the Texans on Sept. 4, 2010.

Johnson played collegiately at Oregon, where he finished his career with 2,336 rushing yards and 30 touch*downs in four seasons. He also added 36 receptions for 303 yards and a touchdown, returned 13 punts for a 9.8-yard average and averaged 15.6 yards on 30 kickoff returns. Hey Mark. Actually, living on the West Coast, I saw Johnson quite a bit. I feel like he was hyped up quite a bit going into his senior year as a possible Heisman Cand. but got injured or something at one point:
Production 2 2005: Oregon intended to red-shirt Johnson but decided to play him after just four weeks. He appeared in eight games that year finishing with 147 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on 24 carries. Johnson also caught four passes for a total of 30 yards and returned 13 kickoffs for a total of 298 yards. (22.9-yard average) 2006: He appeared in all 13 games finishing with 644 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns on 103 carries and 17 receptions for a total of 100 yards. Johnson also returned 16 kickoffs for a total of 327 yards. (20.4-yard average) and 13 punts for a total of 127 yards. (9.8-yard average) 2007: Johnson appeared in six games finishing with 344 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns on 54 carries and seven catches for 98 yards and one receiving touchdown. He also missed the final seven games of the season with an injury (See durability). 2008: Johnson starts all 13 games and rushes for 1,201 yards and 13 scores on 168 carries. He also catches eight passes for 75 yards.
Height-Weight-Speed 4 Johnson has adequate bulk but he is on the shorter side so it's unlikely he can add much weight to his frame and his top-end speed is just adequate.
Durability 4 Tore anterior cruciate ligament in right knee during 2007 Washington State game (Game No. 6) and didn't participate in contact drills in spring of 2008. Returned to play in all 13 games as a senior in 2008, though.
Intangibles 2 Competitive player. Hard worker with some versatility. Good football character. No off-the-field issues to our knowledge.

Running Back Specific Traits
Competitiveness 2 Very competitive back. Not big or overly powerful but runs hard and works to finish runs. Flashes an effective stiff arm and can pick up yards after contact. Generally does a good job of falling forward.
Vision 2 Reads blocks fairly well and is improving in this area. Is instinctive. Will need to make adjustment from primarily lining up adjacent to QB in shotgun-heavy spread offense. Can be too eager to bounce runs outside at times, but is becoming better at making one cut and getting north-south. Displays excellent vision in the open field.
Explosiveness 2 Shows above-average burst to and through the hole. Is quicker than fast, but he's definitely a shifty back that reaches top speed quickly and displays a second-gear.
Balance/Change-of-Directions 2 Quick feet and very good body control. Runs low to the ground and changes directions quickly. Is elusive in space and shows ability to embarrass defenders in space that don't breakdown (see: first drive of Washington game in 2008).
Passing Game 4 Lacks ideal experience as a pass-catcher. Flashes ability to snatch the ball out of the air and adjust to poorly thrown pass. Loses focus at times and needs to be more consistent catching the ball. Runs adequate routes and is a big-play threat after the catch. Doesn't show ideal awareness and is going to have some problems anchoring when asked to help out in pass protection.

One of my all-time favorites. A true classic.
