Shanahan Presser

Post by CanesSkins26 »

Highlights of Shanahan's press conference from today...

CP went down on the 27 yarder bc his wrist was bothering him and he was afraid of getting him from that side and losing the ball.

Wrist injury contributed to Shanahan playing Torain more in the second half.

RB rotation will change week by week.

Confident that they have the personnel to run the 3-4 effectively.

Devin Thomas - We talk about this each week. He has to be better than the guys ahead of him to play.

Pass defense needs the most work. 3rd down defense is a big concern.

Will have a better idea of if Bidwell, Williams, and Armstrong can play next week by Wednesday.

This is the main issue. Everyone is focused on run stopping, NT play, Portis etc. But as far as the secondary goes, not much has changed since we ran the 4-3 last year. Same personnel basically. Same inconsistent play, basically. I hope Hall can play more like he did in the first game, where he tackled with abandon and ball hawked a lot. But in the last two games, he has looked more like the D.Hall of last year. Landry has played better this year as Haslett has put him close to the line of scrimmage more often. But his pass coverage is still mediocre at best. Rogers too. This is a passing league and unless the front seven dominates in the pass rush, this secondary does not seem capable of keeping offenses in check.

here is what i don't get... and maybe somebody can help me out on this one. shanahan keeps saying that devin thomas has to play better in practice in order to get more playing time in games. but you know what, we don't need a morning superstar. we need a gameday superstar. and our "practice superstars"... galloway, williams, and armstrong have contributed nothing. i caught as many passes as those guys in this last game. i mean, if you lined up d.thomas wide, threw him a WR screen and let him be athletic out there... he would have accomplished more than these guys. i mean, are they great decoys for santana moss? are they great blockers for our explosive run game? i don't care how good they look in practice if they don't perform in games.

Galloway has been better then any of our other receivers other then Moss and Cooley. A solid #3 on a team with two viable receivers. But I digress. You and I must remember Thomas differently when he played before this year because the guy blew as an NFL wide receiver. The big story this year for Thomas is he seems to have found the Desmond Howard solution to having an NFL career when you're a receiver who can't play receiver in the NFL...

OK, then go with the Shannahan/McNabb scale where he's not even getting into games as a receiver

i would have to say our 3rd down conversions on offense have to be a concern too.

The Eagles can't wait for the Skins to come to town. The radio talk shows are saying the Skins are a bad team in the mode of the Jags. The Eagles have been anointed Superbowl Champs already. Much like the Phillies have already won the World Series. The media is still blaming McNabb for all the Eagles past woes and Vick is the savior, sound familiar, you only have to look at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to see the same story, blame the guy that is gone, he won't defend himself, because he is a professinal. Oh there are still some McNabb fans, but in this City Vick could be elected Mayor tomorrow, but lose on Sunday and they will be calling for Kolb to replace him. So Redskins lets show Vick the door and see if we can push Fat Andy through it as well. GO SKINS!

I'm sure that Shanahan is going to have a lot of things that he feels this team needs to take and improve on from the last 3 games

I would agree that the most pressing need for improvement right now is the 3rd down conversion rate and the overall defense - the lack of much of a ground game is a bit of an issue but this can be augmented with short passes in lieu of the run

we finally get to see McNabb playing against the Eagles - should be a good game

You mean B Lloyd blew here, then in Chicago, then in Denver (check his stats from last year). Yes, he had a great game this week — and I really do wish him well because he's a great person — but let's not pretend that he was an all-star who just couldn't get a shot in Washington (. . . or Chicago . . . or Denver). I really don't see the point you're driving at.

I'm sorry - but that is just not a very good post - I'm sure that both Kyle & Mike would love to use Thomas' speed in the passing game but if they don't see it "working" during practice there is no way you try it during a game

how do you know this? - I think this is what Shanahan is saying - he has not shown that he can help, YET

we are all a little frustrated but some of this "stuff" is just showing how little some fans know about what is going on

Not a single receiver other than Moss caught a pass on Sunday. How much worse than what we put out there can Thomas really be?

I agree with the thought

BUT do you think that Kyle should not worry about what they are seeing on the practice field to date and just give Thomas a few times on the field during the next game IF he has not and continues to not show the likelihood of being able to help during practice this week?

According to what Shanahan intimated - they would like to use Thomas but he has not been able to make them feel that he can get it done at WR.

Are you suggesting that because we have no passing game we use Devin Thomas when he has not and continues to not show anything in practice that he can help?

Canes, I think you're brilliant - This could be what's holding us back

we should play people because we think they might help even when they have not shown it in practice

Again, how could he be any worse than what we are seeing from Armstrong, Williams, and Galloway? In 3 games they have 8 combined catches and 0 td's. Considering that we are 1-2, just lost to arguably the worst team in the NFL, and have zero production from our receivers other than Moss, what harm is there in giving Thomas a chance during a game?

He showed some potential at the end of last year, so find a way, even if it's just a few plays a game, to get his speed on the field. Anyone that's paying attention can clearly see that we have a serious lack of speed/athleticism on offense, so it would make sense to try and find a way (wr screen, end around, etc.) to get the ball in Thomas' hands.

I don't understand what you're asking me. I understand what I think you're asking me, but I don't know how it makes sense. Are you asking why we cut Banks if he can return kicks? If so, how does my saying we kept Thomas because he excelled at returns lead that we need to keep anyone else for that reason? Particularly someone who did it when it doesn't count. And why would we want to tie up more then one receiver position with a returner who can't play receiver? And if you're not asking me that then I have no idea what you're asking

i used to own racehorses. and one thing i can tell you is that "morning workouts" mean nothing. some horses shine in workouts, but come race time, they just don't get it done. other horses look terrible during workouts, but find a way to shine during races. i am sure i will get ripped for this comparison... but i truly believe that some athletes CAN raise the level of their game during certain times. whether it be game day, prime time games, final drives, etc... during kickoffs, devin thomas looks like a game changer. i don't care what he has done during practice... because from what i have seen during his limited special teams play, he looks like a guy i want to be getting the ball. we don't have the luxury of having a surplus of great WRs. we fall into the category of, at this point, what can it hurt? i mean, those WRs, other than moss, have done nothing. thomas, at worst, would go out there and do nothing, and at the very least, EQUAL the zero production from galloway, williams, and armstrong. sometimes, you just gotta find lightning in a bottle. i just believe it is worth a shot to see if it is in thomas.

IF the player is not showing that he can get it done in practice, do you still think that he should be playing in a game - the comment "how much worse can it be" makes no sense

how many coaches put players on the field in a game that cannot show they can do what is needed in practice?
