Old news...
Did anyone else see Bruce Smith as a colossal waste of time? He was fairly popular, and I'm sure he'll be a first ballot hall of famer, but I could never really embrace him as a Redskin. Not only were his best days behind him, but I just viewed him as someone that Joe Gibbs would have had NO patience for. I appreciate that he liked to get the fans into the game, he's not without any merit, but he reminded me of Charles Mann in his final two seasons as a Redskin. He seemed to get PT based on past rep, great physical condition and the team being thin at his position. You could put Mr. Universe out there, but if can't play, he can't play.
Frankly, I was surprised that Smith played a single down after breaking the sack record. I half expected him to take a few bows, walk straight to the locker room, dress and leave. "Team? What team? I am the SACK KING! I don't know what my team's record is, the only record I care about is the one I now hold."
Or maybe I'm being a bit harsh, and he's gone now, so what difference does it makes. It's just fun to talk about the Redskins.

NO!! It was all good when he got 10 sacks his first year with us and 9 the year before last. He didnt even really have any help. He got most of those numbers fighting thru double teams.

I wont give a crybaby any respect. I dont care what he has done in previous years. Any forty year old man that conducts himself in the matter Bruce did last year is just a stooge. Stubbiefield, Wilkinson, and Daryl Gardner is a considerable amount of help. The guy is a shell of his former self. RETIRE PLEASE!!

If Bruce cried for money that would be one thing, but all he wanted to do is sack the QB

He is gone now, so be it.

I think he was a big waste of time. all he wanted to do was play for us to break the sack record. i can not respect players that go to the owner and cry about playing time. he was not a team player and in fact was very selfish. if i remember correctly he almost single handedly destroyed Smarty Marties locker room.

He was only good his first year. I wish he had retired after that so we would be over his cap hit by now. And all the back-door politicking and whining to our owner. I saw him talk about his "being blessed" on NFL Total Access and the only thing I though was he was blessed there was a team sucker enough to play him the last 3 years.
WIth all due respect to his career, and he was a great one, he was nothing but whining and a locker room cancer the last few years for us.

RedskinCity, I dont care who the player is you dont go behind the coach's back and take playing time grievances to the man that signs the checks. At times I felt he didnt care about winning, just getting that stupid record.

If this is true
. According to the stat tracker, he only started 8 games. He still had 5 sacks. I dont know and you dont know what really went on. You are just speculating?? Unless you do know, preach on. I deal with facts. I dont deal with the media much. I hope what you are saying is not true.

Here is an article about his talking with Snyder about playing time. The guy created problems this year. A true professional would have retired and not forced the team to cut him.

I can hear him crying now, "Mr. Snyder, what is this IDIOT of a coach doing, doesn't he realize that I'm the ONLY one on this crappy DL that is able to get pressure on the QB" Bruce was the only guy getting pressure last year, yea he wanted the record (wouldn't you guy's), but every down he was in, he played the best he can, that's more than I can say about alot of guy's on this team (last year).

That is no excuse for running to the owner like a child to a parent when you dont get your way!

Spurrier ran our team into the ground. I can't blame Bruce for being bitter. He came here hoping for a shot at a Superbowl ring, and then to have a 2nd year coach want to bench him when he was our only credible pass rushing threat on the DL!?? I also thought he was held ALOT last year and the Refs looked the other way. He was also credited with psyching up the team with a locker room speech vs. NE (or was it Seattle?)

I dont know if yall were watching the same games I was because he got manhandled for most of the season....and that was why he was benched. How did he respond to this adversity?? Go and cry to the owner...what a team player!! Hope you can detect the sarcasm

I can look back now and say I'm glad we got Bruce Smith when we did. I can look at it one of two ways. A.) We'll never be arguing, "Why didn't we get Bruce Smith when the Bills uncermoniously dumped him" and B.) We know now that HOF-type numbers in past years don't always translate to success in a new team with a very awkward Defensive Coordinator situation.
I think that Bruce might've continued to be a major force if we'd just given him a little continuity and help on the other end.
The fact is, I don't know which way I like better. Either way, he's reached his record and he's moved on now. If nothing else, he'll be a really cool footnote in our Media Guides.

Bruce Smith and Deacon Jones. Great linemen, HOFers, Redskins. Redskins? Not running either of them down, just one of those things when somebody doesn't seem to fit the colors. Kinda like Dexter Manley in a Cardinals uni or Charles Mann in a 49er uni. Although at that point, I was glad someone wanted Charles Mann, I felt like he was holding things up here. But since the Skins haven't done much since his departure...what do I know.
Johnny Unitas as a Charger, Joe Namath as a Ram, Heck, even Tony Dorsett as a Bronco. It just seems wrong. But the Skins have had some players that were very good in their previous homes, and very good in Burgundy and Gold, too. Earnest Byner, Terry Allen, John Riggins (remember him?), Jim Lachey, Gerald Riggs, Kenny Houston, Wilber Marshall. I'm sure there are alot more.

All of the players were complaining about how hard camp was and Bruce was the ring leader, now two years later what are they all saying about spurrier. He needed more discipline. It's sounds like a whole lot of whinning to me. Who was in the middle of all of it? Bruuuuuuce. The Redskins never had so much complaining and belly aching until Bruce came to Washington. I am sorry I feel so strongly about this but I don't like whinners's who use the Redskins for their own personal gain.

Well, to each his own. With Bruce, a valuable lesson was learned. I agree with Chili that he never really looked right in B&G. Still, he was part of our past where we were assembling a ten years past Pro Bowl Roster. Out of those, I believe that he was the longest lasting. We now know that that formula doesn't necessarily work. Now that Gibbs is back and we don't have to worry about Norval, Bruce or Spurrier anymore, I can look back and chuckle.
Honestly, though. If you're a fan, and I know you are (as is Dan Snyder), don't you (in a moment of weakness) sign Bruce Smith to go along with Carrier, Sanders etc. ?

Unfortunately, the "Redskin's Way" was gone for about 12 years.
Luckily, we're about to see a return to our roots.
As you and I both know, we can't hold anybody in that span responsible for not meeting that standard, since it was suspended when Joe left town. Even Petitbon couldn't handle it.
