The game is still going on, but I just need an explanation - when you are down by 3 scores, with 4th and goal, why would you not kick a field goal?

could someone please explain this to me?

thanks

Because you get too wrapped up in the totality of the deficit (17 points) instead of how you might go about reducing it.

OOOHHHH OOOOOOHHHH I know!!!

Because, even though Sherm Lewis is calling plays, Zorn still calls 4th down...

seriously... that's it.

give me a break... when your offense is as pathetic as the skins is, you should go for it... it was a perfect call, and if Rabach didn't snap it into his big butt, Thomas was WIDE OPEN once again... though, we would have to count on JC hitting him...

lol You guys really think Suisham can kick an onside, hell you saw it for yourself. They might as well go for it and try to save face.

Because common sense is not common. Close thread.

I had no problem with the call... you need touchdowns (2) to win the game and chances were that we wouldn't have a better shot at the end zone than that one. If you're a betting man and had us to beat the spead, then you should be upset. Otherwise, it was the right call to have a shot at winning the game.

Again, it's not the play call but the biggest issue of the season. This team can't execute

We needed 3 scores to tie the game. It was idiotic to not take the points. We needed a field goal at some point so you take the points when you can get them. Even if we score a td there we still need a td and a fg to tie the game. Just another mistake in the long line of Zorn miscues as head coach. Gruden himself said that it was a mistake not to kick the fg.

Seriously? That was the mistake in the game? As I think you said on another thread, we were down by 17 with 4:40 left... yes we needed 3 scores, but only if at least 2 of those scores were TDs... otherwise we needed 4! What are the chances that we can get better shots at the end zone than the 4 yard line TWICE in 4:40? IF we were going to win, we needed a TD there.

Here's the real question: how could we have had a better shot: a touchdown on 4th from the 4 plus field goal starting from our own 40 with 1:30 left or a FG from the 4 and a TD starting from our own 40 with 1:30 left. Maybe in reality it's a coin toss, but if you need at least 2 TDs, I pick going for it on 4th every time.

BTW: if we had been down by 10, I 100% agree with you, kick the field goal. However, we needed at least 2 TDs, so we had to go for the 7.

In hindsight, if you woulda kicked it, it would have made it a diff ball game.

ok! a little math for some of you - when you are down by 17, you need to score 2 touchdowns and a field goal - NOW, you have an offense that has not been able to score points - you take points whenever you can - this is not about being able to regain an onside kick or trying to make a point for the players sake - it's just basic football

To say that the decision was justified is the same as saying a team should go for 2 to win the game rather than an extra point to tie it OR the same as saying, I think we should go for the TD when a FG would tie the score

Anyway - this team has a hard enough time just scoring points - I cannot understand why you would not kick the FG - nobody so far has explained it and will not be able to IMHO

what a joke this team is - Jake's right someone should just lock this thread - the team is just dysfunctional at this time

Jim Zorn made that situational decision...

The CORRECT call is to kick the FG on the first 4th down.

It's actually very simple.

If you kick the field goal (and make it), you are down 2 scores.

If you go for it on fourth (and don't make it) you are still down by 3 scores.

It doesn't matter if it's 3 or 7, you need the points.

You play your percentages. It's like chess - you have to be looking at your moves 2, 3, 4 possessions in front on you.
