Sources Confirm Portis-Sellers Incident

Just got off the phone with multiple league sources who confirmed that running back Clinton Portis and fullback Mike Sellers had a heated verbal exchange earlier this week over Portis's frustration about Sellers's blocking this season.

No punches were thrown during the argument - which occurred Monday at Redskins Park and was first reported late Thursday night by WRC (Channel 4) sports reporter and anchor Dan Hellie - but the players had to be separated and restrained, the sources said. From what we're hearing, Sellers confronted Portis at the complex after learning Portis requested to have Sellers removed from the game during Sunday's 16-13 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at FedEx Field.

While speaking with coaches, Portis requested to have blocking tight end Todd Yoder take Sellers's place in the backfield against the Buccaneers. Apparently, Portis's frustration stemmed for the ill-fated fourth-and-goal play in the 19-14 loss to the Detroit Lions on which Sellers failed to execute his blocking assignment, Portis failed to score and Detroit took over on downs.

In a text message to a reporter, one source emphasized no punches were exchanged, and he played down the argument as players "simply letting off some steam." But the Sellers-Portis incident underscores the tension at the complex during a week in which owner Daniel Snyder hired an offensive consultant, Sherman Lewis, because of his dissatisfaction with the poor point production of Coach Jim Zorn's version of the West Coast offense, and in which defensive coordinator Greg Blache, a week after emphasizing the need for personal accountability, informed team officials he no longer would answer questions from reporters - a mandated duty under NFL rules for all coordinators.

The Redskins (2-2) face the Carolina Panthers (0-3) on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.

That's not good. Those are two guys you want on the same page. They should be locked at the hip with each other. If someone misses an assignment on Sunday, we may have a problem.

Sellers DID NOT fulfill his assignment in the play on 4th down. I watched him become a spectator and miss his blocking assignment. Portis is right. I have watched the play several times.

The fact that EVERYBODY in the world knows and predicts accurately that we run left in those situations doesn not help much either but ...

it is the beginning of something worse than we anticipated. How long before Zorn loses the locker room? He already lost the owner who already gave him his "confidence vote" with a "fresh set of eyes".

This is just fantastic!!!! 2 of our 3 pro bowlers (and my favorite 2 players on the team) on the offensive side ready to claw at eachother because one is missing blocking assignments, while the other is not averaging 4 ypc.

Portis should look at himself and realize he needs to do some stability work on a bosu ball. He might be one of the worst running backs at keeping his balance. I have seen him multiple times trip over his own feet or try to cut off of his inside foot and fall down for a 6 yard gain that could have been a 20 yard gain. I don't question his blocking ability or his toughness (although he runs the ball twice and takes himself out of the game, more stamina than toughness), but his ability to maintain proper balance has killed his ypc. Maybe it's because he's hurt, maybe he can't work during the week, but after 4 knee surgeries from a personal standpoint when injured the first thing you work on is stability exercises. Him blaming Sellers for not scoring is ridiculous if he could maintain his balance he would have three to four touchdowns by now. He cries too much and this is a fault of the team no one takes ownership and admits mistakes they have made it's always the team needs to get better. When will someone say I need to get better and when I improve the team will improve. Looks like there's a blizzard at Redskins Park and the snowball is getting bigger by the second.

Last time I checked, Portis has one fewer SB rings than Timmy Smith - in other words, until you win something other than nothing, shut up and let the coaches coach!

Remember when Portis called out Gibbs after a loss in Cleveland saying it was like the Browns knew their plays, and then he called out the O-line last year, and now Sellers - a true blue collar baller!

Portis is out of line - and Zorn has lost control of his team.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP)—In a week full of Washington Redskins distractions, here’s another one: The starting backfield of Clinton Portis(notes) and Mike Sellers(notes) had a bit of a spat.

Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn confirmed Friday that running back Portis and fullback Sellers had a verbal confrontation earlier this week.

Zorn downplayed the dispute and said he didn’t know what it was about. But WRC-TV, which first reported the incident, said that Portis and Sellers had a heated exchange, with Portis venting frustration over Sellers’ blocking.

“These guys love each other. This is just how a team goes,” Zorn said. “I thought it was great. There was no fisticuffs, there was no shoving or pushing. … In reality, it’s just a lot of nudging and posturing.”

Last week on a weekly radio appearance, Portis cited a missed assignment by Sellers as contributing to the Redskins’ failure to score on an early fourth-and-goal play in a loss to the Detroit Lions.

Neither Portis nor Sellers was made available to speak to reporters after practice at the end of a week that has been full of off-kilter news for the Redskins. On Tuesday, the front office hired a consultant, Sherman Lewis, to help out the struggling offense. On Thursday, defensive coordinator Greg Blache began an unexplained media boycott.

Zorn compared the running backs’ clash to two friends fussing over a dollar bill.

“These guys are like brothers,” Zorn said. “And they care about each other, so that’s really between them. Seriously, it’s not an issue.”

Asked about Sellers’ run blocking this year, Zorn said: “Well, he’s missed a couple of blocks. I think he’s been great as a run blocker, though.”

Agreed. Clinton speaks his mind which some people take offense. I would hope that there are players on this team willing to speak the truth and get in people's faces. The only problem here is that it wasn't kept in the locker room. Sometimes a person needs a little kick in the ass every now and then.
