I love power rankings. I can't get enough of "experts" spewing two sentences that encapsulate each teams abilities and weaknesses. Reading them makes me happy. The major sports media outlets havnt put out rankings in a little while but they are not THAT out of date. So here we are.....


espn: Skins, 20th:

Maybe he forgot about them until after he'd done the first 23 and didn't want to redo the rankings to get them in the correct spot. 8-8 last year, even if Haynesworth isn't as good as hoped, the D will be better. The offense should be as good or better with another year of experience. I would probably put them in the 15 to 20 range, but no way are they below the Broncos. The Broncos changed coaches, changed defenses, jettisoned their best player after Bailey, pissed off their best offensive weapon, and their d was high school level last season. That team is going backwards fast. If the Broncos are better than Washington this year, Snyder will have fired Zorn before the end of the season.

I think you are confusing subjective rankings with NFL league standings.

For example, have you ever thought that a team wasn't as "good" as their record indicated? Or do you always consider the Redskins an underdog as long as their record is lower than their opponents'? I know that I think about the strength of teams in a broader way than just glancing at their W-L columns.

I don't really get the crankishness with power rankings. I enjoy reading most of them, and mentally have my own estimation of where teams tend to rank. It's a fun exercise, because as we all know the final score and the league standings table don't always tell the whole story. What's wrong with talking a little about football? I don't think FOX or CBS are trying to argue that their top two teams belong in the Superbowl. . .

I guess the relevant concern is over how much the Redskins offense will improve relative to other teams. Every team that hasn't done an overhaul can try to make some claim that the additional year will give them an edge in experience. In a world where every team is trying its hardest to improve during the offseason, you have to stand out to get noticed.

I basically agree with you on this, but I think that's where the writer is coming from.

I think the Broncos are getting a free ride on their reputation from the last 5 years. They also play in the easiest division in the league. We haven't had a good reputation over the last 5 years and play in the hardest division in the league.

Again. . .I don't agree with him. But I can see why his knee-jerk reaction was to put the Broncos over the Skins.

Being subjective isn't what gets a team into the playoffs. Look at last years patriots as a prime example of that fact. Look, I get the point of the thread and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I get what you and tincoskin are saying so I don't want to seem like I am acting like a colorful 4 letter word to anyone. I think we should be ranked towards the middle of the pack as far as ratings are concerned. Our D, on paper, is one of the best in the league. Our offense is the main concern and rightfully so. If we have a 24th ranked offense and a number 3 ranked defense then we should be middle of the pack and not mid-twenties. I am excited for the season so I think positive and I am a homer (which explains why I've drafted Campbell the last couple of years). I believe we will do well; very well and in fact, I may just draft him again this year.

Irn, I understand what you mean about every teams offense improving to some degree or another. I think what we are counting on more than anything is that our offense will improve more than others considering we are entering the second season under the same offense. Last year should have been a learning period. This year should, in theory, show a marked improvement.

That is why I really put no stock in these preseason rankings. You are asking people to predict too much before the first snap is even taken. Way to many variables.
