LAVAR ARRINGTON CALLS JOE GIBBS “A COWARD”
Posted by Michael David Smith on November 11, 2008, 10:25 a.m.
During his first few years in the league, former Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington looked like one of the NFL’s most promising young defensive players. By the age of 25 he had been chosen to three Pro Bowls and had signed an eight-year contract extension, and he appeared on his way to becoming a Redskins legend.

But when Joe Gibbs became the coach, things started to change. Arrington and Gibbs didn’t see eye to eye, and Arrington wasn’t a good fit in the defense of assistant head coach Gregg Williams. By the age of 27 Arrington was out of Washington, and by 28 he was out of the NFL.

Arrington is now retired, and he seems to blame Gibbs for the way his career headed south. He also suggests that if Gibbs really cared about his team, he wouldn’t have quit after the 2007 season.

“I called Joe Gibbs a coward for leaving,” Arrington said, per the Washington Times. “You came in, you made some money for your NASCAR team. No one else is going to say that. I’m sure more people thought I was a [jerk] for saying that. Joe wouldn’t call me because he knows. There are a lot of people who know the truth about what went down with me and the Redskins.”

Arrington is now the owner of a sports-themed restaurant that tries to attract Redskins fans, and as Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post notes, a lot of those Redskins fans probably won’t be too happy to hear that Arrington is calling Gibbs a coward.

Man I have always liked lavar and had his back, but the guy just doesnt know when to keep his mouth shut. There could be some truth to what he is saying, but i dont see how this helps his image and rep In d.c. Thoughts???

I don't know. None of us know what really went down with LaVar and the Skins. My memory of it was that the Skins - Gibbs and Williams - did not treat LaVar very well. They did the same thing with other defensive players they did not like - burying them on the bench and not telling them why. LaVar may sound a little rough but I think there maybe something there.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that a different coaching staff is having more success than Gibbs and Co with the same players. In not saying, I;m just saying.

LaVar's a punk. He got cut, like thousands of other players and yet he is still whining and crying. He was not a team player, could not stay healthy and was making crazy money. I would have cut him too. To call a man as classy as Gibbs a coward is just stupid. People can say all they want about Gibbs 2 not being a success, but look at the before team and after team. I mean when Gibbs got the team they had Trung Candidate as their starting RB. He built a winner and handed it off to Zorn to win with it.

And for LaVar's restraunt, its probably not the best idea to bash Gibbs when you are trying to bring in Redskin fans to your place. I know that I will never step foot in that establishment now.

It sounds like sour grapes but is it too far-fetched that maybe there is a little truth to what he is saying?

The one thing that society tends to do is give those that are great more than the benefit of the doubt when something negative comes their way. For a great as many of the legendary NFL coaches like Gibbs were, they still had some stuff with them and have rubbed some people the wrong way. Same with great athletes. Michael Jordan, probably the greatest basketball to ever live, was notorious for his selfish and arrogant attitude. But it's hard to argue that against six rings in the 90's just like it's hard to argue against Joe's three Super Bowl rings. Joe Gibbs was not himself when he came back. That was evident and maybe that had something to do with this situation.

Only Lavar, Joe, and God himself know what went down between them. It might have been in bad taste for Lavar to voice his opinion so publicly but everybody entitled to one.

Whether L.A. was treated badly or not, the Redskins aren't the only team that didn't think he could play.

It sounds like a has-been trying to stay relevent and get some publicity for his restaurant. I always liked Lavar, but after this, not so much.

I believe there is some truth to it.

Actually the Giants thought he could play and he performed well for them until he got injured.

Yea CLL, I was gonna say the same thing about the gnats. Plus he did mess himself up pretty bad so he couldn't really play after that. Look, I've said it many times before, I really like Lavar and the dude usually says whats on his mind. We will never really know what went on but like someone said there may be truth to it, we'll never know. Good luck to him still and better luck to JGR.

I'd love to know the real story. I don't see why Lavar doesn't just come out and tell his side of what happened. Its a lot more respectable than calling somebody a coward and just hinting that everybody doesn't know the real truth.

That's kind of a cowardly thing to do itself, isn't it?

I am NEVER going to lay a step in his joint.

Lavar Arrington was a SELFISH, HIGH-MAINTENANCE EGOMANIAC. He always was and is a Pittsburgh Steeler WANNABE.

He thought that it was all about HIM. This may have been truth when Dan Snyder recognised that he needed to pamper and spoil HIS ONLY attraction throughout the worst years of his ownership but it went predictably WRONG.

He is trying this STUNT because NOBODY would pay attention to him anymore.

Hey, Lavar, if you gave the playbook to Coughlin and you have always been a Steeler WANNABE, Why don't you take your restaurant to NY or Pitt. They may like you there, or not and just laugh and send you to bankruptcy! Monkey
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

I don't know why all this stuff is coming out now. I don't think Lavar is doing this to attract people to his restaurant or else his comments would have been more "franchise friendly" than calling Joe Gibbs a coward.

I also find it strange like riggofan, that Lavar doesn't just come out with his side of the story instead of using veiled refrences about the goings on behind the scenes. He does say "I am not a mudslinger so I won't get into details of it" But really isn't that what he's doing by calling Coach Gibbs a coward?

There were more shots taken at Dannyboy than Joe Jackson Gibbs. I remember all the controversy over the missing $6.5 million signing bonus and the eventual buy out of the contract.

Lavar does give Danny boy some credit although it's backhanded http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2007/09/26/surp ... nyder-joe/

Arrington then adds: "I will be a successful businessman based on probably 85% of the things I have learned from Daniel Snyder..." So The Danny may not be much of an NFL owner, but there's no disputing his non-football business acumen.

There is obviously more here than meets the eye.

Actually, my friends who were Giants fans thought he was awful, but he was playing well in the game he got hurt.

His Giants career stats: 6 games (5 starts), 14 tackles, 1 sack. 2 tackles a game isn't exactly stellar production.

disgruntled (dis⋅grun⋅tled) adjective - displeased and discontented; sulky; peevish: A disgruntled LaVar Arrington is unwilling to let it go.

Let it go, man... just let it go.

I would not call Gibbs a coward but he was not the same Joe Gibbs from Gibbs I. I do not remember as many public displays of dis-satisfaction, bickering and in-fighting between the coaching staff and players as the were within the first couple months of Gibbs return. I have always felt that the internal bickering and fighting were part of the problem with the Redskins lackluster play. It seemed that every year there was a problem with a player.

I am glad that Gibbs came back as he assembled a team that has lots of potential and players who fit that Gibbs mold of being core Redskins. I was also glad to see him leave as he did not know what to do with the team he had assembled in the new NFL.

Joe Gibbs 2nd tenure may be defined by what Jim Zorn does with the team although Gibbs will not get credit for it. If Gibbs were still here, I do not believe that the Redskins would have 6 wins at mid-season.

I can remember when LaVar was with us and he took shots at Daniel Snyder and the Redskins before we got rid of him and I've always said that he is a scumbag and he still is one. To call Joe Gibbs a coward, what a joke. I can't stand LaVar, and never will. Someone needs to give him a box of kleenex to wipe up his tears. LaVar grow up.
