What event will you 'not miss'
Everybody likes different events and follows different athletes for different reasons. What single event do you have ear-marked as a must watch for these Olympics.
By the way, for me, it's the mens 200m butterfly. I know many of you will be watching the great Michael Phelps in his quest for 8 golds, and one of them will be in the 200m fly.
There's a young Canadian kid from my hometown that is the Canadian record holder and will be realizing his Olympic dream in a few days. I featured him on the cover of my paper this month, and over the last few months, I've been fortunate enough to get to know him and his family.
So while I don't expect any of my American compadres to stop cheering for Super Fish, it'd be nice if all of you secretly hope that Canadian Joe Bartoch comes in second.
Joe's a bit of a late bloomer and is (hopefully) a bit off the 'radar', but I think he's going to make a 'big splash' at the cube.
Keep an eye out for him in the mens relay race as well... the team qualified fourth overall in the world and that was without arguably their best swimmer in Brent Hayden. They're a legitimate medal threat.
Go Canada. Go Joe.

Yeah I just saw an interview with the kid and they pretty much made it all about Phelps - it was kind of sad.
I get that Phelps is 'it', but I don't know why every media member has to make everything about him... bit unfair to guys like Lochte that are also realizing a dream.
Like I always tell people, and I think it's what I like most about the Olympics, EVERY ONE THERE is a winner. Every one there is not only realizing a dream, but many-to-most of them have spent a lifetime getting there.
Respect.

I can't speak for the intl media, but seems to me that it is easier for lazy American sports journalists to focus on the superstar then try and learn the in 's and outs an unfamiliar Olympic sport.
Bruce has the authority. When Bruce makes the decision, it's a Redskins decision.

and the USA basketball. im thinking they will get gold this year
yea and so does argentina. if they make it to us because i kno they got upset first game. it wont be easy but i think USA will get it because they can just run everybody to death by the 3rd quarter. a good coach helps this year too

What helps even more is good point guards, Chris Paul and Deron Williams (and even Jason Kidd, to an extent) make me feel very good about our chances this year. And I agree with the sentiment that anything less than gold is embarrassing. I also really like the addition of Tayshaun Prince, there's not a guard/forward left for us to play that he can't lock down.

im sick of people saying we need a big man. we have possibly the best big man in the nba in howard and bosh isnt small. lebron is huge playing F at 6'9. the good thing about the pg's you were talkin about is that they are young and they will be the future of this basketball team for the next two olympics or more

Dwight Howard is the best big man in the NBA, if he was allowed to get away with hooking people like Duncan does or just flat-out dropping a shoulder into their chests, a la Shaq, he'd be unstoppable. The big man argument doesn't hold up because who are we going to face that has a big man we should be worried about? Spain ... please ... I worry about them as a team but Gasol is soft for a big man, LeBron by himself can get Gasol out of the post. Modern basketball -- and especially the FIBA variety -- is guard oriented. I think one of the overlooked aspects of this team is its defense too, their full court press is quite good. My lone concern is their ability to hit the 3 against the zone and, frankly, I'm not losing much sleep over that.

i agree. duncan or shaq would just slow the team down and bosh can handle gasol because gasol is so soft. if he were as tough as KG they wouldve had a much better chance winning the finals. the biggest man in the olympics is Yao i think and howard didnt have problem with him. and yao is soft for a 7'6 center
