Guess The Final 53 Player Final Roster

Post by GSPODS »

This seems much more difficult than in past seasons. It used to be fairly cut and dried. Joe Gibbs would, almost without deviation, keep the veterans over the rookies and the journeymen. Having absolutely no idea what Jim Zorn's philosophy is, some of this truly is a guessing game.
I can't imagine Jim Zorn being of the George Allen school of thought. I think the Redskins draft strategy this year says the opposite, if it says anything at all. I actually see several veterans being cut this season, some the fans probably want to go away, and some the fans have grown attached to over time. As we all know, the Redskins can only keep 45 active, can only keep eight on the practice squad, and can't add tenured veterans to the practice squad in any case, not that they would want to.

So, here's the best guess I can make as to who will be around.
And my best guess as to who won't. There are a few surprises.
Let's see how many of the not so obvious choices we can get right.

It may only be worth fantasy GM points and THN bragging rights, but then again, so is the annual Hognostications Pool.

61 Rabach, Casey C
77 Thomas, Randy G
66 Kendall, Pete G
60 Samuels, Chris T
76 Jansen, Jon T
75 Rinehart, Chad OL
74 Heyer, Stephon T

15 Collins, Todd QB
17 Campbell, Jason QB
5 Brennan, Colt QB

46 Betts, Ladell RB
31 Cartwright, Rock RB
26 Portis, Clinton RB

45 Sellers, Mike FB

47 Cooley, Chris TE
86 Davis, Fred TE

12 Kelly, Malcolm WR
89 Moss, Santana WR
82 Randle El, Antwaan WR
83 Thrash, James WR
11 Thomas, Devin WR

92 Evans, Demetric DE
99 Carter, Andre DE
55 Taylor, Jason DE
78 James, Erasmus DE

94 Montgomery, Anthony DT
79 Alexander, Lorenzo DT
96 Griffin, Cornelius DT
64 Golston, Kedric DT

52 McIntosh, Rocky LB
54 Blades, H.B. LB
59 Fletcher, London LB
53 Washington, Marcus LB
58 Sinclair, Matt LB

27 Smoot, Fred CB
24 Springs, Shawn CB
29 Torrence, Leigh CB
22 Rogers, Carlos CB

30 Landry, LaRon S
36 Schweigert, Stuart S
37 Doughty, Reed S
48 Horton, Chris S

6 Suisham, Shaun K

14 Brooks, Durant P

67 Albright, Ethan LS

Am I anywhere in the realm of reality?
Am I completely off-base?
Who do you have making the team, aside from the obvious names?
Who are known names who will be getting cut?

I think that's pretty close.

To round out a 53-man roster, I'm going to add a few names...

Jason Fabini
Todd Wade
Anthony Mix
Todd Yoder
Chris Wilson
Justin Tryon
Vernon Fox
Ryan Boschetti

Possibles...

Khary Campbell
Nehemiah Broughton
Horace Gant

I know we have 3 solid RB's in Portis, Betts and Cartwright, but I'm still very anxious to see Marcus Mason in preseason. Byron Westbrook will also get a look in preseason as well. There's going to be some good competition.

I would like to see Sinclair and Chris Wilson continue on with the Skins.

I went with the 45 player "Active On GameDay" roster, but I think that was probably confusing to some people. I agree with the other names you've listed as being valuable reserves, but not necessarily active on gamedays unless there are injuries. I think the Redskins have had their fair share of those already.

Hard to come up with a game day roster in July considering all that goes into every week will be different, based on the opponent, their schemes on both sides of the ball, if two QBs should dress or three. I'll just take a stab at the final roster including the 8 man PS so the thread can stay on topic.

TEAMS - Ethan Albright, Shaun Suisham, Durant Brooks

QB – Jason Campbell, Todd Collins, Derek Devine, Colt Brennan

RB – Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwright, Marcus Mason

WR – Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, James Thrash, Anthony Mix

OL – Chris Samuels, Pete Kendall, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, Jon Jansen, Andrew Crummey, Todd Wade, Stephon Heyer, Chad Rinehart, Kerry Brown, Jason Fabini

FB-TE – Mike Sellers, Chris Cooley, Jason Goode, Todd Yoder, Fred Davis

DL – Jason Taylor, Andre Carter, Cornelius Griffin, Demetric Evans, Erasmus James, Kedrick Golston, Rob Jackson, Anthony Montgomery, Chris Wilson, Lorenzo Alexander

LB – Marcus Washington, London Fletcher-Baker, Rocky McIntosh, Khary Campbell, HB Blades, Matt Sinclair

DB – Shawn Springs, Carlos Rogers, LaRon Landry, Reed Doughty, Stuart Schweigert, Chris Horton, Vernon Fox, Kareem Moore, Fred Smoot, Byron Westbrook, Justin Tryon, Leigh Torrence

Like I said it's July, someone may get injuried, someone may hit the market. I'm short a a linebacker but with Rocky and Rogers status up in the air I went with the extra DB, and right now Colt Brennan and Devine are a toss up as to who hits the practice squad.

I grant you that, but there isn't much else going on right now.
More or less I wanted to see if everyone else agrees that certain veterans won't be around for opening day.

Fox is on my list but I really don't see him sticking around and I'm sure a LB will be added at some point

I think Rogers on PUP. Kames & Moore either on PUP or IR.

I think we keep Fabini for his experience & versatility. Wade is gone. I think we keep Yoder & Broughton. We probably keep Wilson, Boschetti & Tryon.

Next most likely to stay are Campbell, Westbroog, Fox & a 6th WR, probably Mix (if he slims dowm) or McMullen.

Why too early? You'd rather guess after two rounds of cuts when the odds of being correct are better? We're just playing fantasy GM, not actually making the decisions, which is much more difficult.

1niks, after some thought, I agree with you and can see Fox hitting the market. He's been here a few years and had his chance, but hasn't been all that impressive. I'd like to see the young guys get a chance.

That said, I see you have Horton making the practice squad and Moore making the roster. From what I've read about Moore, he appears very talented, just that he went to a smaller school. Do you see him as being more talented than Horton? I know it's speculation here, just curious about your thoughts. I'd like to see both make the team, with Landry, Doughty and Stu as the starters.

When you hear more about a guy that's not out there than you do about the one that is you have to take that into consideration. (we are doinf this less than a week into camp). If Fox is let go Horton would make the active roster ahead of Westbrook at this point.

Moore has yet to take the field. I don't thing a small school rookie can learn enough in then time he will have (to say nothing of getting back in shape) to help this year. I think Fox makes the team by default unless we find someone else.

FB: Sellers, Broughton
QB: Campbell, Collins, Brennan
WR: REL, Moss, Thrash, Thomas, Kelly, McMullen

Defense (24):
DE: Carter, Taylor, Evans, James, Jackson
DT: Griffin, Golston, Montgomery, Alexander
LB: Fletcher, Washington, McIntosh, Campbell, Blades, Sinclair
CB: Springs, Smoot, Rogers, Torrence, Richardson
S: Landry, Doughty, Rox, Horton

ST (3):

My list:

DE (5) Carter, Taylor, Evans, Wilson, James (if healthy, otherwise Jackson)
DT (4) Griffin, Montgomery, Golston, Alexander
LB (6) Washington, Fletcher, McIntosh, Blades, Campbell, Sinclair
CB (5) Smoot, Springs, Rogers, Torrence, Tryon
S(5) Landry, Doughty, Horton, Moore, Fox

OT (3) Samuels, Jansen, Heyer
OG/OC (5) Rabach, Thomas, Kendall, Rinehart, Fabini
TE (3) Cooley, Davis, Yoder
WR (6) Moss, ARE, Thomas, Kelley, Thrash, McMullen
QB (3) Campbell, Collins Brennan
RB (4) Portis, Betts, Cartwright, Mason
FB (1) Sellers
LS (1) Albright
P (1) Brooks
K (1) Suisham

Other possibilities:
Crummy/Geisenger if 1 of them proves he can play C.
Fincher
Westbrook (if Rogers starts on PUP (unlikely))

That's a pretty good list, in my opinion. I might personally change one or two things: for example I think Chris Wilson makes it at DE. Also, I'm not 100% sure what it would be, but I might have a different CB lineup, too.

Nice work, though; I could easily see this being our final 53.

I see Wilson over Jackson at DE, Mason over Broughton at RB, and Fincher over Sinclair at LB

But that's just me :)
