Mix getting significant looks at Mini-Camp

Anthony Mix worked as the Redskins' third receiver during the team's first minicamp practice of the offseason Friday.

He also saw "several reps" with the first unit of Antwaan Randle El and Santana Moss. Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly didn't run with the starters, but it's early. Mix made an impressive one-handed grab on the first day.

I'm thinking that the 3 way battle between Mix, Kelly and Johnson will be the highlight of the pre-season. Would it be so out of range to maybe see all three on the field at one time?

Geez, we would have a 6'2" shorty out there with the tall receivers.

I wouldnt be suprised at all to see all three of them on the field at the same time. Last year James Trash started a game and got injured during the game. I think that forced Keenan to start a game too. He was the fourth reciever last year. Moss and Randel El are just not durable and they will hurt their hamstrings at some point and miss time. This means atleast the 4th reciever on the depth chart will be playing significant time and possible the 5th reciever if both of them are hurt at the same time.

James Thrash might be in serious trouble this time around.

I think Thomas and Kelly will have to earn their spot.

To Cooley's point, anyone know if they are making more than MIX. I bet they are.

All three of these guys are trying to make a name for themselves. This should get interesting.

Man, if Mix, Thomas, and Kelly all make a big splash. Then Zorn rotating them in and out, mixing up all the WRs. The D's won't know what to do. Then add in the TE's and RB's. Whoo.

I hope it all pans out.

Im pretty excited to see what Zorn can do with our O.

However on the flip, side, I really hope our D don't drop off. I really don't know what to expect from our D this year.

No chance of Thomas or Kelly not making the roster. Moss, Randle El, Thomas and Kelly are definite. Mix and Thrash are probable. Mann, McMullen and Toler are unlikely. Mathis is listed as a wide receiver, so if the Redskins keep him as a kick / punt returner it could mean the end of James Thrash with the Redskins. Zorn seems to have a "thing" for Anthony Mix. Thrash was and still is a Gibbs player. Barring anything out of the ordinary it could come down to those two, and Mix does the same things Thrash does, and Mix is considerably younger.

My 2 cents

Seeing as how Mix was signed from the Gnats practice squad, I'd be surprised if he is making more than the league minimum.

I was thinking Mix is making League minimum as well.

Why do you say they should make more CS26?

What have they done in the NFL that Mix has not?

Thomas and Kelly did better in college than Mix, but none have played a down in the NFL as WR.

It is mini-camp after all. Mix is fighting for a roster spot, so he has to show the coaches something.

Just a note, but the more tape I watch of Malcolm Kelly, the more I think he could end up being the best of the bunch. We may not see his emergence until 2009 or 10, but I think he could be special if he stays healthy.

In 2 NFL seasons Mix has 3 catches. He was undrafted out of college and was mediocre in college. Kelly and Thomas both had success in college and were drafted in the second round. Thomas and Kelly are also 4 years younger than Mix and have a lot more potential imo.

Absolutely, Mix is a fringe player until he actually does something, anything. Thomas and Kelly have shown brilliance in college, so we're willing to gamble on their potential to be brilliant in the NFL too. If the season started today, I'm taking Thrash over Mix as the 5th WR.

:-s What I found interesting was that the original post referred to a 6'2" Johnson as short.

No he's talking about Octavius Johnson, free agent signee from a JUCO in Arkansas. Played one season with a small Div II school, not sure the name. He broke lots of records down there and is a beast, 6' 8", 235lbs. with decent speed. He's from the same hometown as Cerrato's wife, otherwise, nobody else in the NFL even has heard of him.

I can't specifically remember who said it, but a few days ago, one of the guys on the NFLN said he thinks Kelly is underrated and could wind up being the rookie of the year. We'll see. I watched his college games and the kid is talented. Zorn said on one play yesterday in camp, Kelly "got behind the coverage", but the ball was overthrown. My gut tells me Kelly may end up being a spacial player and many teams will regret not taking him.

This should not be a surprise really because each year there are a lot more players who play better than the scouts and know-it alls thought they would. The list of players taken in rounds 3 thru 7 who become really good players in the NFL is often filled with success stories - there are a lot more players taken in the first 2 rounds who do not turn out to be good NFL players

I would really hope that Kelly works out for us because the only reason he was not in the top 100 players was because of the combine AND his Pro day times - I think that players should be judged more on what they have done in college than at one combine and one Pro-day  Kelly should have been one of the top 3 receivers taken in the draft.

I agree with your thoughts there, SkinsJock. As I've said before, I'm kinda glad Kelly had a poor pro day, he fell to exactly the right spot. :D Kelly IS the ideal west coast receiver and I do not believe his 40 time at the pro day is indicative of his football speed. Regardless, we didn't need a speedster, we needed a big possession guy with great hands. Kelly is that guy. . . and then some. He's going to be a nice addition for us. ARE made comment about Kelly making some nice grabs today in camp.

Mix hasn't proven anything, how does this prove Cooley's point. Jake Long making more money other established tackels makes a point. But this one doesn't.

No Mix hasn't proved anything yet. My point was, Mix, Kelly and Thomas are all unproven in the NFL, why does Thomas get the highest pay? Mix did prove his worth (some) with his special teams play last year. He made a few really good plays on ST last year. That should be a least one notch above Thomas and Kelly at least one notch above what they have proven in the NFL. For all we know at this point, they could both be busts.

Because it would be ludicrous to pretend that the three receivers have the same potential. Kelly or Thomas could be busts but that doesn't make them equal with every other rookie entering the league. You are denying the reality that some players are poised to succeed, and because of that their skills are in high demand.

No, I am not denying the reality that some are poised to succeed. What is being proposed is a Rookie salorie cap. IF there were a 3 year cap for Rookies, They would all make the same. I don't deny one has more "potential" than the other but that is the only reason one gets paid more. He gets paid more for "potential" and that would not happen in any other business. Have you ever got any raise for potential, or was if for production? The point still stands, he is getting paid for potential, not production. Sure he has more potential, he still could be a bust. That's the entire issue with (maybe) adding a rookie cap.

Cooley's personal issue is, so rookies won't make more than probowlers. But why pay a buy at all based on potential, if guy like Tom Brady is drafted in the 6th round, and getting paid 1/4 of what Ricky Williams got paid right out of the draft. Based on potential? Makes no sense.

The Cap in question is also, so you won't have to pay millions based on potential, then that potential never gets met.

I am really excited as well. Then again I am every year. Except for the year after Spurrier came, what a joke that time was. Glad thats over with.

Anyhow the new weapons may prove to be a significant boost to this offense. Portis may have a monster year with a balanced offense. I predict Portis goes off for 1300 yards and 15 Tds next year.
