Less than a week removed from voiding the final three years of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers and becoming a free agent, wide receiver Terrell Owens is the victim of a procedural oversight that will force him to remain with his former team.
That news could affect the off-season plans of the Eagles and any other team with possible interest in the star receiver known as much for his touchdown celebrations as his immense talent. It doesn't necessarily mean, however, that Owens is unavailable. Owens has said that he is interested in playing for the Eagles, Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens.
Owens apparently missed a deadline to file the necessary paperwork announcing his intention to become a free agent. His agent, David Joseph, said yesterday that he would appeal the ruling by the NFL's management council.
Should the Niners fail to free Owens, they could trade the receiver anyway. He is on shaky terms with San Francisco management.
How badly Owens wants to leave the 49ers ultimately could decide his fate. Would he demand that his contract be reworked before he moves to another team? If so, that would make him a tough sell. It's doubtful the Eagles would be willing to give up draft picks and give the wide receiver a huge signing bonus.
Owens, 30, is scheduled to make $5.3 million next season, $5.9 million in 2005, and $6.5 million in 2006. Though $17.7 million is a lot of money, it's a lot less than the $20 million signing bonus plus salary that Owens reportedly was going to seek in free agency.
Other questions also would have to be answered before Owens moves to another team.
What could the 49ers realistically expect for Owens? What would the Eagles or any other team be willing to offer?
Though no team officials ruled out the possibility that the Eagles would pursue Owens as a free agent, it is believed they were more inclined to go after a lesser-known free agent such as Justin McCareins from Tennessee or Darnerien McCants from Washington and make a big push for defensive end Adewale Ogunleye from the Miami Dolphins.
didn't i read somewhere that DM was offered a 1 mil tender, making his compensation a first rounder? i mean correct me if i'm wrong, maybe it was a rumor.......
THN's resident jerk.
Glock .40 Model 22 - First* line of home defense.... 'ADT' is for liberals.
As posted earlier in the week, the Washington Times said the Skins tendered McCants the medium tender @ a little more than 1 million...making his compensation a 1st round pick (if the Skins did not match the offer)...however, if a team works out a trade they can give up any pick they work out.
That was the point of my post earlier this week, that it was a possibility since his trade value would not ever be higher.
Another off topic thing that has me having a hot prediction type week is the other night I had a dream I was partying with some friends and Paris Hilton. Well, today I got a call from one of the friends in my dream and they were partying with Paris Hilton last night at a pre-oscar party in LA....pretty crazy huh?
Even though I'd hate to see D. McCants go... we sure could use another first round pick, if some one was willing to give us that for him...though I can't see that anybody would...but i've seen crazier things happen.

Well, to be humble....I failed to predict that my water heater would be broken when I got home today...guess what I get to do tomorrow?
I will be very bitter if Andy Reid sat his fat butt in front of the computer, went to theHogs.net, and saw the McCants post, and with his mouth filled with a jelly doughnut, yelled, " Yesh, I want me some Darnerian!!!!"

Oh, please no, no.
Hey, if it will get us a first round pick, I'm all for it...we could surely use that pick to fill one of the wholes we have.

It says McCants is "likely" to get a high tender causing 1st round compensation.
But as stated, a trade could be done for anything and now is the hottest McCants is going to be for the money we are paying him now. Next year he will be a UFA.
Darnerien is MUCH better than James Thrash. It's pretty sad when Eagles fans can call him James TRASH when they're the trashiest fans in the league!
My mom and I saw his dad at a game and he said that when Darnerien was being drafted, the Eagles and Giants showed interest in him. And that was 2001, now the eagles still want him.

No way James Thrash can even compare with DMac. If we let DMac go im hoping we can either snag their 1st or 2nd round pick. And like BTP said, they do have a couple of good TE's including 2003 2nd round pick L.J. Smith who is a speedy receiving TE. I'd love to pick him up in exchange for DMac if we cant get a draft pick.

Smith..That's his name...I knew they had Lewis and someone else...either one might not be bad...although if we took Lewis, i'd like to get atleast a late round pick with him...I think thats fair for an up-n-coming WR

I'm gonna get blasted here, I know, but I'm gonna say this:
Even if we're offered a lower 1st round draft pick for McCants, I wanna keep him. This kid has the heart of a giant and has limitless potential!!!
Yes, we may have other needs right now....but if we let this kid go now...we're gonna really regret it in 2-3 years when we see how well he does for the other team he's playing for.
Beginning today, I am going to start an organization called:

I definitely think we should sign Paris Hilton. definite upgrade to the "first ladies of football"!

I agree with you totally man. Why does everyone think she is so damn hot? Shes a skinny little royal chick with a lotta money but no body. Shes like aneorexic.
JH....
If someone offered a late 1st round pick for DMac you wouldnt take it? Why man? We have glaring needs at some positions on this football team, whereas we have great depth in our WR Corps. If DMac leaves, we have Taylor Jacobs/Cliff Russell waiting in the wings to be our #3 and 4 recievers.
Tell ya what - why don't we see how the needs get filled with FA.... we would have to sign another person with that slot in the draft and no first rounder is what we would call relatively cheap...
I don't know tho - I would rather see McCants and Cloman out there than Gardner - for all his size he can't block without holding and drops 50% of the balls thrown to him
