Ramsey wants out!

Post by SirSmizzy »

With Brunell's arrival in Washington, incumbent Ramsey will ask for trade
Posted: Friday February 20, 2004 4:31PM; Updated: Friday February 20, 2004 4:31PM

INDIANAPOLIS -- Now that Washington and Jacksonville have their long-anticipated Mark Brunell trade in place, just awaiting the March 3 opening of the NFL's trading period, the focus immediately shifts to what becomes of the Redskins' incumbent starting quarterback, Patrick Ramsey.

Ramsey's agent, Jimmy Sexton, said he will begin lobbying Redskins owner Daniel Snyder for a trade Friday night, when the two are scheduled to dine together at some Indianapolis restaurant. Both are in town in conjunction with the NFL Scouting Combine, which runs until early next week.

When asked what it would take to convince Washington to trade Ramsey, who is entering just his third NFL season, Sexton made it clear that his client's dissatisfaction with the Brunell acquisition will be made known.

"It's going to take the realization [by the Redskins] that this kid is not going to be a happy camper,'' Sexton said. "It's fair to say Patrick wants me to seek a trade. Why wouldn't he seek a trade?''

Brunell and the Redskins late Thursday agreed upon a seven-year contract that will pay him $43.6 million, including an $8.6 million signing bonus that is deferred over the first four years of the deal. In essence, the contract is a four-year, $20 million deal that was elongated for salary-cap purposes. The Redskins will ship their third-round pick this year to Jacksonville in return for Brunell.

Clearly, Washington is paying Brunell starter's money, and Ramsey is not buying the pretense that new Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs intends to make his quarterback job an open competition.

"Our whole contention has been it's not a competition when you pay one guy 40-something million dollars,'' Sexton said. "In this salary-cap era, you start the guy [you paid that to] at least for a year or two, right? So this is a farce that there's going to be competition. It's not right. It's not going to be competition.''

Competition or not, Ramsey and Sexton likely face an uphill battle in getting Gibbs and Washington to see the wisdom of their logic. In an era when every NFL team feels the need to have a strong backup option, Ramsey represents a young, cheap alternative to Brunell, who will be 34 in September.

Ramsey's salary-cap number is a very modest $1.5 million this season, and while Snyder might be sympathetic to Ramsey's desire to find another starting opportunity, Gibbs is not expected to seriously entertain trade offers. That could change if Ramsey makes his unhappiness with the quarterback depth chart a problem situation for the organization, but for now Gibbs plans to continue to reassure Ramsey that he remains firmly in the club's future plans.

Ramsey's camp is prepared for their trade efforts to play out over the course of several weeks, with the hope of developing a robust market for his services. Miami is believed to be the most likely suitor if Ramsey is shopped, with the quarterback-desperate Dolphins potentially even paying the price of their first-round pick in trade.

Another potential trade partner for the Redskins, albeit an extreme long shot given their NFC East rivalry? The Cowboys, who still might be in the market to upgrade from starting quarterback Quincy

This is so stupid. I think he will stay. I don't think Ramsey has been whining (like Wilbon said today on PTI) and he deserves to be our starter. I don't understand why he wouldn't be willing to test himself by beating out a QB in camp. That's why I think all of these "Ramsey Wants Out!" stories are really stupid and irrelevent. Until Ramsey says on TV point blank "I want to be traded" I will be very skeptical of every single article like this.

Like the article says, he made 2 backup QB's famous.
P-Ram will make it 3. He'll be starting again within a couple of years and go on to have a career in glory.

Either that or this will shake his confidence to the ground and he wont be starter material ever.

OR, he gets his trade and I wont care too much what happens to him after that!

Smizzy dear is there not a Jets trade in the works you could be more concerned about??? Ramsey is a REDSKIN. He is staying a REDSKIN. The media has been wrong before and I'm sure this is just another example of how they grab a little rumor and blow it up to be a real story!

This is an article that quotes PR agent saying "It's going to take the realization [by the Redskins] that this kid is not going to be a happy camper,'' Sexton said. "It's fair to say Patrick wants me to seek a trade. Why wouldn't he seek a trade"

And your response is what about the jets?

Your ridiculous.

Why would he sit for you if he wants out...you think he will sit and then play in 3 years and everything will be fine?

He wont be a skin for much longer...you can count on that...and this if my coming from a football fan angle not a jets angle.

Forget what teams the guy who wrote the article speculates about..thats his opinion...however..PR agents comments speak volums...

I can understand, he does not want to be a backup...he has already been a strater for the better part of 2 seasons...he will not return to the bench for a guy who is not even better....I dont care how much you want him to stay to dismiss what his agent has said ..is silly...these comments were made after the Brunnell deal...not before....if they were before id say it a ploy..it can be dismissed...not after.

Well, as Maske said in the Chat House, it doesn't make any sense to go into the season with Brunell/Hasselbeck/Hamdan which would mean that there would be the hassle to finding ANOTHER QB to replace Ramsey.

I think you need to keep him....so i would tell his arse to deal with it..

Can he?
comments like these made by his agent that will make it hard for him to just slip into the #2 role.

You made the point. Ramsey is a man of his word and has not said anything about wanting to be traded. It's all his agent's doing. It is uncharacteristic for P-Ram to not man up and say anything which is why I choose to not believe these reports which are popping up everywhere.

Smizzy,

Take another look a your quote:

"It's going to take the realization [by the Redskins] that this kid is not going to be a happy camper,'' Sexton said. "It's fair to say Patrick wants me to seek a trade. Why wouldn't he seek a trade?''

These are Sexton's words, not Ramsey's words. Everything Ramsey has said publicly has contradicted these sentiments.

If anything Patrick should be courting new agents, not new teams.

His agent saying these things cannot just be dismissed....there is no way he made these comments without talking to Ramsey...or he would no longer be his agent...this is buisness...

Do you really think Ramsey would sit around and allow his agent to make these comments without his permission...Now i understand your point about it being "too bad"...but do you honestly think Gibbs wants this..Does he wants a disgruntles back up QB?What happens when brunell throws 2 picks...the fans, the media and ebeybody within yelling distance is going to be screaming for ramsey....This is a lose/lose situation for you guys....

Yes - he is a kid and this guy probably says - "Let me handle it Pat, I know what I am doing, I will take care of you like you are my only son!" At least til the next hot prospect comes along. GEEZZZZZZ

Hey, Smizzy...
As I recall, PR's contract was essentially an incentive-laden contract; mostly performance based escalators with triggers that PR would easily reach with substantial (read : starting quarterback) playing time. Without the playing time, his only guaranteed money was likely the signing bonus.

They didnt pay Brunell back up money....gibbs wants brunell its obvious...Ramsey will want out ASAP.
